Abstract: Light is projected through a grid (e.g., a Ronchi ruling) and onto a background, where it forms an image of the ruling. The light from this projected image is then reflected back onto the same grid, with a polarizing refractor (e.g., a Rochon polarizing prism) imparting a small offset between the projected and reflected light, and then on to an imaging camera. Thus, a separate source and cutoff grid is not needed, resulting in a focusing schlieren system that is compact and easy to construct and align. In some embodiments, translation of the polarizing refractor along the instrument axis provides a sensitivity adjustment of the resulting schlieren images. Manipulation of the polarization state of the light through the system allows the projected and reflected light to be coincident, maintaining a small footprint for the system, which can be mounted to the front of the imaging camera.

Abstract: A low-cost photothermal biosensing method and apparatus for the quantitative genetic detection of pathogens such as MTB DNA on a paper hybrid device using a thermometer. First, DNA capture probes were simply immobilized on paper through a one-step surface modification process. After DNA sandwich hybridization, oligonucleotide-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were introduced on paper and then catalyzed the oxidation reaction of 3,3?,5,5?-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The produced oxidized TMB, acting as a strong photothermal agent, was used for the photothermal biosensing of MTB DNA under 808 nm laser irradiation. Under optimal conditions, the on-chip quantitative detection of the target DNA was readily achieved using an inexpensive thermometer as a signal recorder. Illustrative embodiments do not require any expensive analytical instrumentation, but can achieve higher sensitivity and there are no color interference issues, compared to conventional colorimetric methods.

Abstract: Disclosed a passive wireless sensor for detecting discrete droplets and bubbles. A first inductor channel and a second inductor channel are disposed opposite each other to form a capacitor channel, the first inductor channel is connected to the second inductor channel to form a resonant circuit. When a detection object passes through the detection channel, the permittivity between the first inductor channel and the second inductor channel changes and consequently a capacitance value of the capacitor channel changes, thus resulting in a change in resonant frequency of the resonant circuit. A readout device is used to read the resonant frequency of the resonant circuit and perform detection according to the resonant frequency to obtain information of a corresponding detection object.
