  • Patent number: 4768430
Abstract: A compression and volume reduction treatment apparatus for solid waste including a compression sleeve for receiving therein a cylindrical vessel filled with the solid waste and a press ram arranged above said compression sleeve movable upward and downward for compressing, at high pressure, the cylindrical vessel in the compression sleeve. The compression sleeve includes an upper straight large diameter portion, a lower straight small diameter portion and an intermediate tapered portion, thereby compressing the cylindrical vessel and reducing its volume in three dimensional directions by compressing the vessel radially inwardly at the tapered inner surface of the intermediate tapered portion and compressing axially at the inner surface of the lower straight small diameter portion when the cylindrical vessel in said upper straight large diameter portion is urged by said press ram in a uniaxial direction.

Abstract: A compression and volume reduction treatment apparatus for solid waste comprises a main compression and a pre-compression device. The main compression device includes a compression sleeve for receiving therein a cylindrical vessel filled with the solid waste and a press ram for compressing downward the filled cylindrical vessel. The pre-compression device comprises a pre-compression press ram and a pre-compression tapered sleeve for inserting the cylindrical vessel into the compression sleeve. The cylindrical vessel has an outer diameter larger than an inner diameter of the compression sleeve, while the pre-compression tapered sleeve has at a lowermost end an inner diameter smaller than the inner diameter of the compression sleeve. An inner circumferential surface of the pre-compression tapered sleeve and an outer circumferential surface of the pre-compression press ram are formed with grooves and ridges slidably fitted with each other.

  • Patent number: 4729302
Abstract: A box type container used in a press for compacting materials is supported by a floating clamp arrangement that protects the container during compaction and allows significantly higher compaction pressures to be used. The clamps are supported with spherical connections and are pressed to the container with hydraulic cylinders. A container that is fabricated out of square with generous dimensional tolerances is protected as the clamps float to conform to the container being used. All sides and bottom of the box type container are protected with this arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4685391
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for crushing differently shaped and/or sized containers of waste material without disassembly of the device. A mold, having an inner cavity sized so as to accommodate a larger container, has a sleeve located therein which can be locked to the mold for simultaneous operation. The sleeve has an inner cavity of a shape and size so as to contain the smaller container and also to allow a ram to move through the sleeve cavity and compress the smaller container. The ram also has a structure for locking the sleeve to the ram so as to permit the sleeve ram combination to crush a larger container which has been located in the mold cavity. The locking and unlocking of the mold/sleeve or sleeve/ram as well as the mold movement and ram movement are all remotely controlled so as to permit crushing of various sized and shaped containers without disassembly of the press and the consequent exposure of workers to possible hazardous conditions.

  • Patent number: 4658720
Abstract: This invention relates to improvements in refuse bins incorporating compacting means for domestic use, wherein the compacting plate comprises two upwardly oriented tabs which are placed in housings in the lid to be slidably associated with a control member. Catches facing opposite each other and borne by said tabs come into slides in the control member embedded in a groove in the lid. In this way, by subjecting the control member to a translation, it may, at the end of a stroke, be pivoted with respect to the catches in order to orient it vertically with a view to vertically actuating the compacting plate.

  • Patent number: 4550657
Abstract: A baling chamber for a fiber press utilizing rigid upright doors pivotally mounted along their lower portions to contain fibers compressed thereinto by a moving platen. The doors separate slightly at the upper portion thereof responsive to the final compression of the bale thereby reducing the lateral pressure on the bale. One of the doors has rollers thereon to cooperatively engage a track parallel therewith such that the door may be displaced for removal of the bale.

  • Patent number: 4467712
Abstract: The wood baler of the present invention comprises a rectangular frame adapted to receive a plurality of split pieces of wood. A pressure member is movably mounted to the frame so as to move toward and away from one of the end frame members. Hydraulic cylinders are connected to the pressure member for causing it to move toward the opposite frame member, thereby compressing the wood so that it can be bound together in a bale. One of the upper or lower frame members is movable from a first position to a second position which increases the distance between the upper and lower frame members. This permits release of the bale after it has been secured together.

  • Patent number: 4463669
Abstract: A system for segregating and baling textile wastes supplied from a plurality of separate sources embodies a plurality of filling stations which receive the wastes from the separate sources. An upwardly opening portable waste receiving bin is mounted within each filling station with the lower end of each bin carrying a detachable bottom platen. A transfer mechanism moves each bin selectively, back and forth between its filling station and a compression station where the wastes are compressed within the bin. Actuator units in the compression station disconnect the bin from its platen and raise the bin to an upper position about a movable ram to thus expose the bale for final bale out.

  • Patent number: 4331074
Abstract: A combined cover and compactor assembly capable of being mounted on a container for trash or other compactible material has a housing having at least one side wall defining a transfer and compacting chamber therein. The housing has a side opening located in the side wall serving as an inlet to permit the compactible material to be charged into the transfer and compacting chamber, and a lower end opening in registry with the transfer and compacting chamber. The housing is connectible to the container by a housing support that is adjacent and defines the lower end opening to allow compactible material charged into the transfer and compacting chamber through the side opening to either fall or be forced into the container. A retainer assembly including an upper end opening is disposed at the upper end of the housing to releasably support a compactor within the transfer and compacting chamber.

  • Patent number: 4318264
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the packaging of fibrous material, such as staple fibers or tow ribbons, in bales of high density by multi-stage compression and wrapping with two-dimensional packaging material and reinforcing bands. It further relates to equipment suitable for this process. The material to be packaged is first placed in transportable press containers and pressed, transported in these containers to a central press, and then subjected to a main pressing step. The packaging and reinforcing of the bales produced are carried out in the central press which can be performed automatically if desired. By this invention it is possible to combine three or more laying-down and first-stage press devices, which may be supplied from different fiber lines, with a main press.

  • Patent number: 4130055
Abstract: An assembly for cleaning and packing tobacco leaves after curing. The cured tobacco leaves are conveyed to a rotating drum of wire construction to allow sand and dirt to be removed from the tobacco leaves while being tumbled. The cleaned tobacco leaves are then deposited within a sheeting ring which is positioned on a tobacco sheet. A power operated compression member engages the tobacco leaves within the ring to compress the same. Locking elements are provided for selectively engaging the sheeting ring with the compression member for removing the same as a unit from the tobacco, following which the ends of the tobacco sheet are tied together.

  • Patent number: 3990496
Abstract: An apparatus for handling compacted blocks of compost, soil or the like material comprising a chamber defined by two relatively movable plates in which a batch of material is compacted at a compacting station. The chamber is moved to a depositing station at which the block is removed by firstly retracting one of the plates while the other plate holds the block, and then by retracting the other plate, leaving the block deposited on a platform. The apparatus desirably is in the form of a wheel assembly having plates defining a number of chambers radiating from the wheel axis and there is means for indexing the wheel so that each chamber moves in turn from the compacting station to the depositing station.
