Patent number: 5578118Abstract: The addition of from about 0.1 to about 1 parts by weight of a natural polyphenolic-containing vegetable extract (NPVE) per 100 parts of bitumens (particularly asphalt), coal tar, or other high boiling tars containing mixtures of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons modifies the characteristics of the treated product to enhance its performance as hot-melt adhesives, coatings, sealants, roof-coatings, and road-coatings as compared to the base bitumen. The NPVEs are naturally occurring, are extracted from plants and include quebracho, chestnut, wattle and sumac. By forming the ammonia salt of NPVE (ammonium/NPVE) and adding it to a base or NPVE-modified bitumen, the characteristics of increased adhesion and resistance to stripping is observed. Surprisingly, the addition of commercially available anti-stripping agents to an ammonium/NPVE-modified bitumen results in a modified-bitumen having a stripping resistance greater than either of the additives alone.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1995Date of Patent: November 26, 1996Assignee: Saramco, Inc.Inventors: Mark W. Patent number: 5441360Abstract: Asphaltic concrete compounds comprised of asphalt cement and aggregate have, as a substantial portion of their respective aggregates, anthracite coal particles and fines, which are added specially as a lossy microwave material. These asphaltic concrete compounds are particularly useful when laid clown as a pavement, or a top layer of a pavement, which thereafter can be freed of ice, by using microwave energy to debond the ice. The debonding of the ice occurs without causing any noticeable melting of the ice, and the debonded ice is thereafter easily lifted and removed from the pavement of the way, serving as a roadway, highway, runway, or walkway. Also these asphaltic concrete compounds are particularly useful as patching materials when damaged pavement is being repaired, especially during cold weather.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1991Date of Patent: August 15, 1995Inventors: Howard W. Patent number: 5421876Abstract: An organoclay in which a quaternary long chain fatty amine is ionically bonded to clay platelets is found to function both as a filler or thickener as well as a compatibilizer in an asphaltic polyurethane (PUR) dispersion. When a PUR prepolymer is mixed into a homogenized blend of asphalt and organoclay under high shear, a phase inversion occurs the result of which is that a microdispersion of asphalt particles (preferably 1 .mu.m-44 .mu.m) becomes the dispersed phase which is uniformly scattered throughout the PUR prepolymer (the continuous phase). This dispersion is found to be an excellent adhesive, particularly for roofing components which can be secured without using conventional fasteners, and it is stable and moisture-curable to afford, when cured, an elastomer having excellent adhesion to surfaces exposed outdoors. It is also user-friendly because it is solvent-free. The asphalt is treated to react all functional groups it may have because they may react with a functional group of the PUR prepolymer.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1993Date of Patent: June 6, 1995Assignee: Tremco, Inc.Inventor: Ronald J. Patent number: 5340396Abstract: A method for the preparation of asphalt concrete from organic contaminated soils such as petroleum contaminated soils in batch mix processing, with reduced levels of pollution emissions. The resultant asphalt concrete is also either strengthened or the asphalt content can be reduced without loss of strength. The contaminated soil is added to superheated aggregate (380.degree.-450.degree. F.) in a closed mixer, in amounts ranging from 5-25% by weight of total aggregate, and the combination is mixed to uniformity, prior to addition of the asphalt cement binder. A conveying system for the cold wet contaminated soil is also described.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1992Date of Patent: August 23, 1994Assignee: New Jersey Institute of TechnologyInventor: Namunu J. Patent number: 5340391Abstract: Improved cold-applied asphalt compositions for use as sealants, cements, coatings and the like, including recycled asphalt roofing wastes, and asphalt. Recycled roofing wastes provide an excellent, although unexpected, source of temperature-stable asphalt, stabilizing filler, and reinforcing fiber, which provides compositions having exceptional performance characteristics as well as the reduction or elimination of asbestos from such compositions. Use of asphalt roofing wastes allows for recycling of a non-renewable resource and provides an environmentally-safe alternative to landfill disposal of such materials.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1993Date of Patent: August 23, 1994Assignee: ReClaim, Inc.Inventor: Ken F. Patent number: 5328505Abstract: Cationic aqueous bituminous emulsion-aggregate slurries are disclosed to be formed with cationic emulsions prepared at elevated temperatures by emulsifying bitumen, such as an asphalt, in water with a cation-active emulsifier which is the blend of the reaction of a polyamine or of a modified polyamine with certain polycarboxylic acids and glycol esters. The emulsifiers are obtained by reacting suitable polyalkylene amines with lignin and maleinized lignin or their blends with tall oil fatty acids and the reaction product of C.sub.8 -C.sub.15 alkylphenol with 30 to 100 moles of ethylene oxide.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1993Date of Patent: July 12, 1994Assignee: Westvaco CorporationInventor: Peter Schilling

Patent number: 5319008Abstract: A moisture-curable, substantially solvent-free and anhydrous blend of a bituminous material such as asphalt and a liquid prepolymer is disclosed, which blend when cured, results in an elastomer having excellent adhesion to surfaces exposed outdoors. The stability of the blend derives from asphalt being microdispersed in a dispersed phase within a continuous phase of the liquid prepolymer so that particles of asphalt are in the size range from 0.5 .mu.m to 100 .mu.m. The asphalt is treated to react all functional groups it may have because they may react with a functional group of the liquid prepolymer. The prepolymer is a polyurethane, a terpolymer of ethylene-propylene-diene, or a silicone. The microdispersion is stably maintained by a compatibilizer having opposed substantially polar and non-polar terminal portions, present in an amount in the range from 0.01 to 5 parts per 100 parts of the blend. The compatibilizer is chosen from (A) an ester of a C.sub.2 -C.sub.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1992Date of Patent: June 7, 1994Assignee: Tremco, Inc.Inventor: Ronald J. Janoski

Patent number: 5268029Abstract: This invention provides cationic emulsions of bituminous binders of the bitumen/polymer type, formed by a dispersion of an organic phase of the binder in an aqueous phase containing a cationic nitrogenous emulsifier and a mineral or organic acid, the acid being in appropriate quantity so that the pH of the aqueous phase is comprised between 3 and 9. The aqueous phase also contains an agent consisting of at least one water-soluble sequestering salt of polyfunctional nitrogenized carboxylic acid, particularly a salt of alkaline metal or of amine of mono- and di (hydroxy-2 ethyl) glycine and optionally a water-soluble thickening agent. To obtain the emulsions, which are usable for road applications, the emulsifying agent, the sequestering agent and optionally the thickening agent may be used in the form of a premixture containing the agents and called cationic emulsifying system.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1991Date of Patent: December 7, 1993Assignee: ELF FranceInventors: Francis Demangeon, Emile Lopez
