Publication number: 20040206276Abstract: A method of producing cementitious mixtures containing fly ash as one of the cementitious components, under air entrainment conditions. The method involves forming a mixture comprising water, cement, fly ash, optionally other cementitious materials, aggregate, conventional chemical admixtures, and an air entrainment agent and agitating the mixture to entrain air therein. Additionally, at least one sacrificial agent is also included in the mixture. The sacrificial agent is a material or mixture of materials that is not required to act as an air entrainment agent but interacts preferentially with components of the fly ash that otherwise neutralize, repress or depress the activity of the air entrainment agent. Patent number: 6783585Abstract: Concrete's durability to freeze-thaw cycles is dependent on its level of air entrainment, the appropriate level of which is achieved with the aid of surface active or air entraining agents. These agents promote the fragmentation of large air voids into smaller ones and stabilize air voids in the concrete. The carbon matter found in fly ash when used as a pozzolanic component of concrete, adsorbs the air entraining agents, reduces the air voids and concrete's ability to withstand many freeze-thaw cycles. This invention teaches a process for a partial removal of the carbon from the coal ash, used in concrete, through a partial combustion of only a fine carbon fraction of the carbon residue of the coal ash responsible for adsorbing the air entraining agents, in a reactor with a controlled ignition system. The process of the invention thus limits the adsorption of the air entraining agents and improves the freeze-thaw properties of the concrete produced.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2002Date of Patent: August 31, 2004Assignee: Lafarge Canada Inc.Inventors: Philip Souza Zacarias, David Bridson Oates

Patent number: 6755905Abstract: A synthetic slag is produced by a high temperature combustion reaction between coal ash having a high carbon content, and a source of lime such as cement kiln dust. The carbon content of the coal ash is oxidized by oxygen gas, which typically is derived from air or an air/oxygen combination in an exothermic reaction and the heat generated is exploited in the melting process. In this way the gaseous products will typically comprise nitrogen, unreacted oxygen and carbon dioxide, and heat energy can be readily recovered from the hot off gas products evolving during the combustion reaction. The synthetic slag may be pelletized and employed as lightweight mineral aggregate or milled to cement fineness to provide slag cement.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2002Date of Patent: June 29, 2004Assignee: Lafarge Canada Inc.Inventors: David Bridson Oates, John Graham Whellock, Philip Souza Zacarias

Patent number: 6656262Abstract: A process for binding porous-rock particles with cement, wherein the rock is saturated in water prior to mixing with the cement. The saturation step causes water to fill the voids in the porous structure of the rock such that, during mixing of the wet rock with cement, cement particles adhere to the surface of the rock but are mostly precluded from reaching void spaces in the rock. As a result of this procedure, the interstitial water is available from within the rock for the cement hydration process, thereby providing a more uniform curing step than otherwise available, and a greater proportion of the cement is appropriately placed on the outer surface of the particles for bonding. The resulting aggregate is stronger than obtained by conventional mixing processes. In addition, because of the voids left in the composite after the cement has cured and the interstitial water has been either used by the hydration process or has evaporated, the material also exhibits improved insulating properties.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2000Date of Patent: December 2, 2003Inventor: Paul A. Patent number: 6632876Abstract: The invention relates to a product for the internal coating of a pipeline component (1), in particular a metal pipeline component, comprising an internal wall (4) of high curvature. This product comprises a solid charge and a liquid. The liquid is a solution of an alkali metal silicate and the solid charge comprises sand, between 20 and 30% by mass of a binder which sets chemically by reaction with the liquid, and between 4 and 10% by mass of plasticizing adjuvants. The solid charge and the liquid are intended to be mixed (in 5) with a liquid/binder ratio by mass of between approximately 0.3 and 0.45. Application to pipelines for discharge of waste water made of spheroidal graphite cast iron.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1999Date of Patent: October 14, 2003Assignee: Pont-A-Mousson S.A.Inventor: Pascal Soukatchoff

Publication number: 20030188668Abstract: This invention discloses a system for cold bond processing of combustion ash which enhances various characteristics of the resulting cured consolidated combustion ash materials. Specifically, the invention relates to processing techniques which enhances both density and strength of the of the consolidated combustion ash materials. The invention also relates to processing techniques which control various chemical reactions which assure that certain types of minerals are formed in the proper amounts which results in a cured consolidated combustion ash material which has greater dimensional stability and enhanced resistance to degradation. Embodiments for both normal weight and light weight combustion ash aggregates are disclosed which meet various ASTM and AASHTO specifications.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2002Publication date: October 9, 2003Applicant: The University of Wyoming Research CorporationInventor: Alan E. Patent number: 6616753Abstract: Methods and compositions for sealing subterranean zones penetrated by well bores are provided. The methods basically comprise the steps of introducing a sealing composition into the subterranean zone comprised of a hydraulic cement, sufficient water to form a slurry and a rapidly acting thixotropy providing gelling agent, and allowing the sealing composition to remain at rest in the zone whereby the sealing composition rapidly gels and then sets into a hard impermeable mass therein.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2001Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventors: B. Raghava Reddy, Karen Luke

Publication number: 20030164119Abstract: A cementitious slurry comprising fly ash having a predominant particle size of up to about 10 microns, and/or aluminous material having a predominant particle size of up to about 150 microns. The additive acts as a water reduction agent and can replace either wholly or partially a conventional plasticiser.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2002Publication date: September 4, 2003Inventors: Basil Naji, Milton O'Chee

Patent number: 6599358Abstract: A method for pretreatment of a quantity of fly ash for use in a cementitious composition containing an air entrainment agent. An effective amount of an aromatic carboxylic acid or its salts is added to the fly ash to satiate unburned carbon in the ash. The treatment with the aromatic carboxylic acid (or hydroxy substituted aromatic carboxylic acid or its salts) does not significantly promote or retard the air entrainment functions of the air entrainment agent.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2001Date of Patent: July 29, 2003Assignee: Mainland Laboratory, Ltd.Inventor: Bruce E. Patent number: 6589654Abstract: Construction material from granular material reclaimed from the ash of a municipal waste combustor wherein the ash is subjected to sorting and separating recovered metals, the granular material including particles having a maximum particle diameter of 5 to 40 mm, a U-coefficient of 10 or more, and ignition loss of 10% or less in weight and being subjected to at least one heavy metal immobilization agent, preferably phosphoric acid; and a second heavy metal immobilization agent consisting of ferrous sulfate. The ash is further subjected to drying before subjecting the ash to the at least one heavy metal immobilization agent. The ash is further subjected to mulling the material after subjecting the ash to the at least one heavy metal immobilization agent.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1997Date of Patent: July 8, 2003Assignee: Duos Engineering (USA), Inc.Inventors: Gianni B.
