  • Patent number: 4370944
Abstract: A coating method and apparatus for coating the inner surface of a long tube of small diameter, specifically tubes for a condenser. The coating is a type of spray coating wherein a long flexible supply hose, longer than the long tube to be coated, is reciprocated in the long tube with a spray nozzle attached to the tip thereof for spraying the paint by the action of compressed air, from one end of the long tube to the other end thereof while spraying the paint in atomization. The long flexible supply hose of double structure or sometimes of triple structure is composed of a short heating pipe portion adjacent to the spray nozzle and a long flexible hose portion. The paint and compressed air supplied through separate passages in the supply hose are heated to a predetermined temperature by heating means, for example, a sheathed electrical heater wound about an inside pipe of the heating pipe portion upstream of where the paint is sprayed.

  • Patent number: 4346667
Abstract: This relates to a powder applicator for applying a coating stripe in powder form to inside seams of can bodies. The powder applicator is particularly adapted to be utilized in conjunction with welding apparatus for welding the side seams of can bodies and wherein the diameters of the can bodies are too small to permit the provision of the customary excess powder return duct. The powder applicator is located at the 12:00 o'clock position and thus the excess powder will not merely fall out of the applicator. Accordingly, there is provided a channel defined by a porous block having air or gas circulated therethrough and wherein the terminal end of the channel is closed by a deflector block which will deflect any excess powder out of the applicator into an overlying hood which is primarily intended to take away powder overspray which normally occurs between adjacent, but spaced, can bodies.

  • Patent number: 4329380
Abstract: A container wherein exposed surfaces thereof which are particularly subjected to a chemical reaction, such as corrosion, are protected by the application of a thixotropic lacquer. A typical installation is the application of a band of thixotropic lacquer internally of the container along the longitudinal side seam. A thixotropic lacquer has the characteristic that there is very little flow after its application to a surface, and thus is particularly adapted for covering raw edges and like exposed areas of containers. The thixotropic lacquer is applied preferably in plural closely adjacent streams which unite after the lacquer engages the container surface. Beneficial results are obtained by adjusting the temperature of the container and/or lacquer, and further by heating the applied band of lacquer.

  • Patent number: 4327132
Abstract: Water mains, water pipes of housing-development apartments or water pipes of factories can be lined by this method. At first epoxy resin solutions A and B are mixed. The epoxy resin paint is atomized by a rapid air stream. The gaseous mixture is still accelerated by another air stream and blown into a pipe to be lined. The mixture fluid adheres to the inner surface of the pipe and forms a lining layer from the inlet to the outlet of the pipe in succession. When the lining process finishes, the supply of epoxy resin paint is stopped but the air is still blown in to dry the paint quickly for a short time. The residual paint exhausted from the outlet is withdrawn and revived to liquid. This method is useful for the pipes with a diameter larger than 1/4 inch.

The elastomer is desirably deposited in a pool, but may be dispensed in a stream of air or other gas directed toward the deposit. The air reduces the thickness of the pool and feathers its edges and thereby reduces the discontinuity between the deposited material and the tire surface, and promotes bonding.

Abstract: Apparatus for powder coating the inside of can bodies, either along a strip or completely, comprises a spray head having an inlet opening fed through a gun with a powder-air mixture and an exit opening located so as to deliver the powder-air stream transversely to the gun axis onto the can body. The exit opening is either a slot-type nozzle for applying a strip, or an annular opening for a complete coating of the can. So as to apply the coating in a precisely limited form without rebound, insert baffles in the form of rods are fixed in the spray head passage which expands between the entry and exit openings to slow down, distribute and orient the powder-air stream towards the exit opening. A deflector wall is located at the end of the passage to deflect the powder-air stream towards the exit opening.

  • Patent number: 4089998
Abstract: The interior of a pipe is coated with a uniform thickness of plastic. A fluidized bed of heat-meltable plastic material in particular form is connected to the inlet end of the pipe, while the opposed end of the pipe is made attachable to a source of reduced pressure. A source of compressible fluid is also connected to the inlet end of the pipe. The pipe is preheated and then rotated axially while the compressible fluid flows therethrough. The compressible fluid flowing to the inlet is suddenly terminated while a flow from the fluidized bed is immediately established so that the vacuum at the outlet end of the pipe causes uninterrupted mass flow and pulls a finite pocket of the finely divided plastic into the pipe. The flow of particular plastic material is terminated, while the flow of compressed gas is immediately re-established, thereby pushing the pocket of plastic material into and through the pipe.
