The invention also relates to an apparatus for selectively placing the polymer composition in a substantially continuous region extending through the web so that the polymer composition fills the interstitial spaces and adheres adjacent structural elements of the web in the region.

    Abstract: Two coating supply tubes extend parallel to one another and run the full width of a moving substrate in the cross machine direction. Coating is supplied separately to each supply tube from opposite ends. The supply tubes discharge coating through spaced metering holes into an application chamber defined between a sidewall mounted to each supply tube. The counterflow arrangement of the coating supply tubes results in the fall off of coating pressure in one tube being canceled out by the increased pressure in the other tube. The fall off may be further counteracted by varying the spacing between metering holes the greater the distance from the coating inlet, by varying the diameter of the metering holes, or both. The tendency of the heated coating to cause a temperature gradient may be counteracted by cantilevering the applicator head on arms from a support beam through which a temperature-controlling fluid is circulated.

    Abstract: A flattened tubular knitted wire mesh is passed through a bath of a slurry comprising a vermiculite binder and a high temperature lubricant powder with optional metal fibers suspended in water to form an impregnated moving slurry filled web. The slurry filled web is passed between metering bars to remove excess slurry to reduce the web to the desired thickness and then dried in an oven at a temperature in the range of about 200-400.degree. F. The web is conveyed at about 5 feet/minute and forms a continuous sheet of flexible preform with a dried filler which is wound on a take up roller driven by a motor via a controller which also operates the web drying oven. The preform is then formed into discrete preforms for article manufacture such as seals and the like by conventional die compression.

A bitumen-based reinforced membrane sheet is coated with granular material to protect the membrane sheet from ultraviolet rays. However, a section of the membrane sheet is first covered with a piece of protective tape which prevents any granular material from being deposited on the lateral section of exposed bitumen beneath the tape. The membrane sheets are then cut immediately prior to the tape or at the edge of the granular coating and then rolled up. Accordingly, the lateral section of bitumen which is covered by the protective tape is on the innermost part of the rolled-up membrane sheet. During installation, the tape is removed and the exposed bitumen or selvage section is disposed below an adjacent or contiguous membrane. Heat is then applied for an easy and effective seal between two adjacent membrane sheets.
