Patent number: 6235115Abstract: Two coating supply tubes extend parallel to one another and run the full width of a moving substrate in the cross machine direction. Coating is supplied separately to each supply tube from opposite ends. The supply tubes discharge coating through spaced metering holes into an application chamber defined between a sidewall mounted to each supply tube. The counterflow arrangement of the coating supply tubes results in the fall off of coating pressure in one tube being canceled out by the increased pressure in the other tube. The fall off may be further counteracted by varying the spacing between metering holes the greater the distance from the coating inlet, by varying the diameter of the metering holes, or both. The tendency of the heated coating to cause a temperature gradient may be counteracted by cantilevering the applicator head on arms from a support beam through which a temperature-controlling fluid is circulated.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1999Date of Patent: May 22, 2001Assignee: Beloit Technologies, Inc.Inventors: William J. Patent number: 5993553Abstract: An extrusion coating apparatus including a body having a liquid dispensing passage for dispensing a coating liquid on a surface of a sheet, the liquid dispensing passage being connected to a manifold formed inside the body, and a hollow core which is disposed in the manifold at a predetermined distance apart from the manifold and includes in the longitudinal direction thereof, a slit through which the coating liquid supplied into the hollow core is uniformly extruded. The apparatus dispenses a coating liquid at a constant pressure to the surface of the sheet through the hollow core, the manifold, and the liquid dispensing passage so that a coating layer having a uniform thickness in the longitudinal and transverse directions thereof is formed on the surface of the sheet. The apparatus can adjust the thickness of the coating layer, and can be easily handled.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1997Date of Patent: November 30, 1999Assignee: Kolon Industries, Inc.Inventors: Jae-Choon Lim, Kyung-Soo Lee, Seok-Jun Lee

Patent number: 5980634Abstract: A flexible blade is used as a metering device by being inserted at a nip formed between a radiused profile portion of a fixed, rigid loading element and a substrate roll. The flexible blade is forced to take the shape of the profile portion at the nip, and thereby meter the coating to a desired thickness and consistency. Inflatable air tubes engage the loading element to adjust the overall thickness of the coating.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1997Date of Patent: November 9, 1999Assignee: Beloit Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Gian Carlo Tomatis

Patent number: 5976254Abstract: This invention intends to provide a coating device capable of forming, in a good work efficiency, a magnetic layer whose surface is free from irregularities in thickness and is flat. The above object is achieved by providing a device wherein a magnetic paint 3A is coated through an extrusion die 1, and, downstream of the die and close to the non-coated side of a substrate 19, a magnetic field generator 12A with a laminated structure composed of plate-like magnets 15 packed in layers is placed inclined by 45.degree.-85.degree. with respect to the running direction R of the substrate. Through this arrangement, the coated surface of magnetic layer 3 will be free from thickness irregularities and be flattened.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1997Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Assignee: Sony CorporationInventor: Toshio Hikichi

Patent number: 5968270Abstract: A fountain applicator for applying coating liquid onto a web of paper carried past the applicator, has a coating liquid flow path that includes a curved surface along which a sheet of the coating liquid is flowed to subject the sheet to centrifugal force to cause air entrained in the coating liquid to move away from one side of the sheet that is toward the curved surface, so that the one side is relatively free of entrained air. After being flowed along the curved surface, the sheet of coating liquid is directed toward the web in a free standing jet curtain of coating liquid, to contact the web surface primarily with the one relatively air-free side of the coating liquid sheet to decrease the occurrence of skip coating on the web surface, especially when the web is traveling past the applicator at high speeds. The coating is applied in excess onto the web surface and is metered and leveled to a desired coat weight by a downstream doctor.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1998Date of Patent: October 19, 1999Assignee: Consolidated Papers, Inc.Inventor: Wayne A. Patent number: 5964945Abstract: A novel die holder member for use in co-extrusion cross-head die apparatus for applying two coating materials in inner and outer layers to an electrical wire, or the like. A body member has a through, axial bore in which a tip and die members, with respective tip and die holders, are positioned. A pair of radial bores, with which sources of two flowable coating materials communicate, extend from the exterior of the body member to the axial bore. The first coating material flows forwardly of the apparatus through a first flow passage, the second coating material flows rearwardly through a second flow passage, and the two materials flow forwardly, in superposed relation, through a third flow passage from a confluence of the first and second passages to an orifice in the die member where they are deposited in uniform, inner and outer layers, on the wire. The die holder member of the invention has frustoconical external and internal surfaces with a first, annular groove extending to and 360.degree.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1997Date of Patent: October 12, 1999Inventor: James A. Patent number: 5964946Abstract: A bitumen-based waterproofing membrane is provided with an improved edge for sealing with a contiguous membrane to provide a membrane system with improved waterproofing characteristics. A bitumen-based reinforced membrane sheet is coated with granular material to protect the membrane sheet from ultraviolet rays. However, a section of the membrane sheet is first covered with a piece of protective tape which prevents any granular material from being deposited on the lateral section of exposed bitumen beneath the tape. The membrane sheets are then cut immediately prior to the tape or at the edge of the granular coating and then rolled up. Accordingly, the lateral section of bitumen which is covered by the protective tape is on the innermost part of the rolled-up membrane sheet. During installation, the tape is removed and the exposed bitumen or selvage section is disposed below an adjacent or contiguous membrane. Heat is then applied for an easy and effective seal between two adjacent membrane sheets.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1997Date of Patent: October 12, 1999Assignee: Polyglass, S.p.AInventors: Luigi Zanchetta, Romano Zanchetta

Patent number: 5954879Abstract: An application device having a trough tapering downward in a wedge shape, through which a web is guided vertically from top to bottom, and which is sealed at the lower end by means of a horizontal hose. The hose abuts against the web from one side, while the web slips along on the opposite side at the lower end of the side surface of the trough. The side surface is formed on a counter-bearer, which is concave at its lower side, so that a deflection roller arranged beneath it can be set as high as possible, and the free web section from the hose gap to the contact point on the deflection roller is as short as possible.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1998Date of Patent: September 21, 1999Assignee: Kusters Zittauer Maschinenfabrik GmbHInventors: Ingo Lison, Peter Pfeiffer, Steffen Greif
