  • Patent number: 5954880
Abstract: In a roller support device, an inner peripheral surface of a bearing box is covered with a material having a poor wettability with respect to a molten metal, such as tantalum, graphite, C/C composite, silicon carbide or the like. The molten metal does not adhere to the covered portion, or even if the molten metal adheres to and is solidified on the covered portion, the molten metal can be peeled off with a light force. Therefore, after a support roller is pulled up from the molten metal, the molten metal does not prevent a rolling bearing from shifting in the axial direction thereof so that the roller support device can prevent an excessive force from being applied to the rolling bearing when the support roller, after it is thermally expanded once, is contracted as the temperature falls.

  • Patent number: 5843529
Abstract: A pre-metering rod is located between a coating applicator and an air knife, and replaces the smoothing roll in some existing air knife applications. The pre-metering rod consists of a small diameter rod of about one and one-half inches in diameter that rotates at 10-500 rpm against the direction of the coating layer on the web. The web is wrapped around a portion of the circumference amounting to about twenty-five degrees of the rod's surface as it travels over the rod. The rod is supported in a rod holder supported on a support beam. Actuators move the support beam away from the web for threading and maintenance, and towards the web to engage the rod with the web. The combination of the rod diameter, the amount of wrap on the rod, and the speed of the rod rotation determine the amount of pre-metering of the coating, which determines the thickness of the coating layer on the web that is presented to the air knife section. As a result, the thickness of the coating layer can be decreased.

Abstract: Coating devices for application of coating material to the surface of a web or a flexible substrate utilizing the study of flow patterns in blade coating to develop high-speed coaters, wherein the coater may be modified to provide an air layer between the coating liquid and any lower boundary. The coater devices of the described embodiments provide two inlet channels and an outlet channel. Abstract: In-line flat-rolled steel cleansing and finishing methods and apparatus are disclosed which enable flat-rolled steel, as supplied with surface areas contaminated with iron fines and other debris from gauge reduction operations, to be continuously processed in-line, free of interruptions for cleansing purposes. Continuous-strip methods and apparatus are disclosed which enable in-line continuous-strip cleansing in a manner which decreases iron fines carried by strip surfaces to a desired level while providing for continuous uniform cleansing. Carry-over of iron fines from the cleansing operations so decreases such that iron content of a coating means is decreased resulting in improved corrosion-protection coating. Diminishing iron content in a hot-dip galvanizing bath increases efficiency of aluminum additions and diminishes iron-aluminum dross.

  • Patent number: 5756163
Abstract: In a coating device, a nozzle is configured by combining a front block and at least one back block. A front block includes a portion which is projected toward the base member with respect to the back block, and a top face of the projected portion is processed into a curved face having a predetermined curvature radius. A top face of the back block, which is opposed to the base material, is processed into a flat face, and a plurality of discharging openings are provided therein for discharging a coating material therethrough. The base material first travels along the curved face of the front block. The base member then travels over the flat face of the back block substantially in parallel with the flat face, while the coating material is discharged through the discharging openings, thus forming a stripe-shaped coating film on the surface of the base material. A line width and a thickness of the thus formed stripe-shape coating film is controlled to stay at designed values and fluctuation thereof are eliminated.

  • Patent number: 5737945
Abstract: A device for application of a minimum quantity of fluid to a web of goods of a given width, wherein application takes place by means of an application beam in which the fluid is distributed uniformly over the working width through a plurality of fluid lines that branch in the manner of a tree trunk. The outlet openings of the lines terminate in a slot that is open facing the web, the length of the slot being delimited by two lengthwise edges. These edges press against a pressure roller located on the opposite side, i.e the back of the web. By means of these lengthwise edges, as the web passes though, its nap is compressed twice, once at the beginning of application with a first lengthwise edge, after which the nap stands up again in the slot and is saturated with the fluid, and again at the end of the application, after which the web is finally squeezed against the second lengthwise edge.

Abstract: An applicator head is positioned beneath a backing roll and has a housing divided into three sections. A first coating pond is defined between an overflow barrier and a first wall. A converging plate extends between the first wall and a second wall, and converges toward the substrate, and a second pond is defined between the plate and an end wall. Coating is introduced to both ponds. A low pressure cavity is defined beneath the converging plate and between the first wall and the second wall. The cavity opens to the second pond, and draws air and excess coating from the second pond. The substrate is prewetted as it passes through the first pond, and coating deprived of entrained air is applied to the substrate in the second pond. Coat weight uniformity and increased machine speeds are thus achievable.
