Abstract: Methods and apparatus for applying a plastic coating to woven yarn tubing to provide conduit for protecting wiring harnesses and the like. The resulting plastic coating layer is very thin so as to generally follow the contours of the woven yarn tubing, without filling in the valleys, thus minimizing the amount of plastic used. Woven yarn tubing is waterproofed by impregnating with latex sealant, and is continuously pulled by a take-up mechanism along a horizontal axis through a heated die and two treating stations in tandem. Each of the treating stations includes a coating pot containing liquid plastisol material and having a resilient circular exit die through which the tubing exits the coating pot to form a layer of liquid plastisol, and an infrared curing oven which heats the plastisol-coated tubing sufficiently to cure the plastisol layer. The tubing, while coated with uncured plastisol material, is not contacted by any element which would tend to deform the tubing from a circular cross section.

  • Patent number: 5368644
Abstract: This invention relates to a mechanical solution applicating device and method for cleaning and/or lubricating a raw stock material as it is being fed to a production machine or station. The applicating device is in the form of a holding tank having a reservoir portion for containing a supply of treating solution. Disposed within the reservoir portion and separated from the treating solution is a bathing tank through which the raw stock material is fed and treated. The feed of the raw stock material is utilized to effect rotation of a scoop wheel which scoops the treating solution out of the reservoir portion and into the bathing tank where the raw stock material is bathed or coated with the treating solution as it is fed therethrough. The rotation of the scoop wheel is effected by a driving wheel journaled thereto disposed in driving relationship with the raw stock material being fed through the bathing tank.

  • Patent number: 5366551
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a coating device for application of coating material to the surface of a web or a flexible substrate. The coating device contains a pressurized channel where a flowing stream of the coating liquid first comes into contact with the substrate. The coating liquid enters the channel at the upstream side and wets the substrate as it flows in the same direction as the substrate. A doctor element is positioned at the downstream side of the channel where the excess coating in the channel follows the contour of the boundary formed by the doctor element and leaves the channel. The geometry of the streamlined boundaries of the coating device eliminate the formation of recirculating eddies or vortices. The elimination of vortices eliminates flow instability due to centrifugal forces and removes harmful pressure fluctuations which could result in coat-weight nonuniformities.

  • Patent number: 5360516
Abstract: This invention relates to the treatment of substrates with fluidized material in repetitive patterns during application cycles. The treatment patterns made with this invention can be altered by changing machine operating parameters. The patterns of fluidized material are applied to substrates using intermittent charges of compressed air. The intermittent charges of compressed air pass through a venturi slot which creates a region of low pressure in the charges adjacent to a region where the fluidized material accumulates between application cycles. This region of low pressure helps to entrain the fluidized material in the charge of compressed air. After the fluidized material is entrained in the charge of compressed air, the charge deposits the fluidized material on the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5350477
Abstract: The described process involves the production of a product comprising a fibrous substrate to which an adhesive with long-term effect and a removable protective strip are applied in order to permit use of the adhesive to be deferred. The process is particularly useful with substrates whose surface to which the adhesive is applied contains irregularities. The adhesive is heated to a temperature at which it becomes paste-like and readily flowable and is brought to an opening situated above a plane surface on which the substrate has been placed. The adhesive is then caused to flow simultaneously with a relative movement between the substrate and the opening to be deposited on the substrate as a strand that is preferably continuous. The temperature of the adhesive on the substrate is then lowered in order to increase its viscosity until it becomes paste-like just prior to the point of turning solid.

The arrangement is such that the web guided by the backing roll moves between the backing roll and the housing. The housing defines an application chamber which is open towards the web and which extends along the web in a cross-machine direction. The application chamber is connected to a source of coating material such that the coating material is applied to the web during movement of the web past the chamber. The coater housing has an upstream lip which is disposed upstream relative to the chamber and adjacent to the web. The lip defines an upstream coating overflow for permitting excess coating material to flow therethrough. A flexible coater metering blade is disposed downstream relative to the chamber.

Abstract: A short dwell coater apparatus is disclosed for the application of coating material to a web which is supported by a backing member. The apparatus includes a housing which is disposed closely adjacent to the backing member such that the web moves between the housing and the backing member. The housing defines an application zone which is connected to a pressurized source of the coating material. The application zone has an open face towards the web. A blade is adjustably secured to the housing and extends from the housing towards the web. The blade defines a downstream extremity of the application zone. A movable flow divider supported by the housing extends into the application zone. The divider has an upstream and a downstream end, with the downstream end being movably disposed in the vicinity of the blade for reducing the size of a flow vortex generated within the application zone due to movement of the web past the open face.

Abstract: An extruder for coating magnetic layers onto electro-magnetic recording tape is disclosed, which is provided with two reservoirs and two outlet channels so as to permit simultaneous coating of two layers. The two outlet channels meet at an angle and merge into a single outlet channel, which extrudes the two layers between a front edge and a rear edge. The front edge has a shape of curvature, and the rear edge protrudes beyond a tangential line drawn from the end of the front edge curvature. The extruder is capable of producing double layered magnetic tape with or without a mixed zone between layers.

The lubricator (28) comprises felt pads (36-38) for removing contaminants from the tab stock (82) prior to lubrication thereof. A hydrostatic chamber (40) receives and disperses lube (42) from a source (44). As the tab stock (82) passes through the chamber (40) the lube (42) coats the tab stock (82). Abstract: A coating apparatus is known in which a coating liquid is continuously delivered from the front-end slit of a die nozzle for application onto a base film which constantly runs without being supported from the back. The improvement is made in which the die nozzle has at the film loading side a front lip and at the film unloading side a rear lip provided at least with a convex surface, both of which being arranged in step relationship so that the slit side end of the front lip is set back from the path of the base film to locate lower than that of the rear lip. Thereby, a higher shear force will be exerted on the magnetic coating liquid temporarily trapped in a space defined by the running base film and the slit side end of the rear lip, thus allowing a smooth surfaced coating to be developed of a highly agglomerative coating material.
