  • Patent number: 10588528
Abstract: A handheld device measures all vital signs and some hemodynamic parameters from the human body and transmits measured information wirelessly to a web-based system, where the information can be analyzed by a clinician to help diagnose a patient. The system utilizes our discovery that bio-impedance signals used to determine vital signs and hemodynamic parameters can be measured over a conduction pathway extending from the patient's wrist to a location on their thoracic cavity, e.g. their chest or navel. The device's form factor can include re-usable electrode materials to reduce costs. Measurements made by the handheld device, which use the belly button as a ‘fiducial’ marker, facilitate consistent, daily measurements, thereby reducing positioning errors that reduce accuracy of standard impedance measurements. In this and other ways, the handheld device provides an effective tool for characterizing patients with chronic diseases, such as heart failure, renal disease, and hypertension.

Rolling or sliding means at the lower end of the vertical support members allow the provider to move unhindered while wearing the radiation protective garment. The provider has access to a control mechanism that allows the shifting between retracted and extended positions of the vertical support members without breaking sterility. An alternative embodiment presents an upper apron portion of the protective garment, which can be manually connected by an assistant to a lower rolling base portion. • Patent number: 9375588
Abstract: In order to decrease collateral heating of ribs and tissue surrounding the ribs in a patient during high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy, shielding material may be positioned on or adjacent to an external surface of the patient and aligned with ribs to be protected using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. The MRI system may be used to image the shielding material and the ribs to be protected, and an error of alignment between the ribs to be protected and the shielding material may be determined based on the images. The shielding or masking material may be repositioned based on the determined error of alignment, images of the shielding material and the ribs to be protected may be reacquired, and the error of alignment may be redetermined based on the reacquired images until the shielding material is aligned with the ribs to be protected.

  • Patent number: 9364701
Abstract: A method of developing the accessory muscles of the upper torso utilizes a therapy device having an adjustable compressive wrap that wraps around the chest of a patient. The wrap is made of a substantially elastic material, such as neoprene, and has a releasable fastener to removably attach the wrap to itself around the patient's chest. The device may have one or more markers attached to the wrap to indicate to a therapist where the attachment device should be attached to achieve the desired compression around the chest. The therapist places the device on the patient and tightens the wrap until the therapist determines, by observing the rise and fall of the patient's chest, that the device has activated the patient's accessory muscles. The patient wears the device at this tension for about two hours per day, at least six days per week, for the first two weeks.

Abstract: A method of protecting sensitive tissue from damage during a surgical procedure using at least one medical tool having a rotatable bit capable of removing tissue, including selecting a multilayer sponge having (i) a tissue-compatible layer with a tissue contact surface capable of being placed against the sensitive tissue, and (ii) a low-friction layer having a lower coefficient of friction than that of the tissue-compatible layer, being affixed to the tissue-compatible layer, and having an outward-facing surface including biocompatible material not easily worn away by brief contact with the rotatable bit during the surgical procedure. The method further includes placing the tissue contact surface of the biocompatible layer against sensitive tissue such that the outward-facing surface of the low-friction layer is positioned between the sensitive tissue and the rotatable bit to protect the sensitive tissue from damage and prevent the sponge from being drawn around the bit when it rotates.

  • Patent number: 8978659
Abstract: A dental device has a U-shaped carrier with at least one channel for embracing an arch of teeth. There are recessed insets in the channel. Discrete inserts carrying a beneficial agent can fit into the insets and release the agent gradually. The device may be used in a therapeutic application and as an athletic mouthguard. Temporary blanks may be initially fitted in the insets, while a portion of the mouthguard is softened before an arch of teeth is pressed into the channel to make a custom impression. The inserts possess different physical properties than the carrier and may be positioned and shaped to mechanically buffer teeth of the arch from mechanical shocks as well as release beneficial agents. The inserts may be replaced or refreshed to maintain the beneficial agent. A dental device having a core carrying a beneficial agent inside a liquid-permeable shell functions as an infant's teething device.
