  • Patent number: 7811242
Abstract: A motion controlling hinge for an orthopedic brace is provided. The hinge includes an actuator secured to one arm, and at least one spring member. As the arm with the actuator pivots in a first direction, at a predetermined flexion angle the actuator applies a force to the spring member, causing the spring member to flex. The spring member exerts a force on the actuator tending to bias the actuator away from the spring member, and tending to bias the arm in a second direction opposite the first direction. In one embodiment, the spring member comprises a plurality of flat bar leaf springs. A movable fulcrum enables adjustment of a force exerted by the spring member on the actuator. A variety of differently sized adapters are securable to the actuator. The size of the adapter determines the flexion angle at which the spring member first exerts force on the actuator. In some embodiments, the hinge includes an “ON”/“OFF” switch that enables a user to disengage biasing force provided by the spring member.

  • Patent number: 7803127
Abstract: A supporting device is worn on the human body to counteract the weight force of the torso in a bent-over posture. The weight force of the human torso in a bent-over posture is to be taken up wholly or partly by the supporting device. The user is not to be restricted in his body movements by wearing this supporting device and using its switching functions, as is the case with known models. The use of differently positioned articulation embodiments on the supporting device which is designed ergonomically and adjustable for different body dimensions and is equipped with switching functions is to ensure practical and functional usability for the user. The device is a preventive device for people working in sectors such as building and agriculture who have to perform upward and downward movements of the torso or adopt a bent-over posture very frequently, as strain-relief for the spinal column and to reduce occupational disorders.

Abstract: A waterproof, disposable, protective cover is disclosed that can completely cover a venous access device and protect it from water, for example while a patient is bathing. The cover includes a flat, adhesive outer band and an inner sheet that is able to cover the device. Superior water resistance results because no part of the protected device protrudes beyond the cover. Short-term use of the cover avoids any need to provide access to the protected device and/or expose the covered skin to air. The inner sheet can be transparent, allowing careful application and avoidance of contact between the adhesive and the device or the region of skin penetration. The disposable cover can be rectangular or square, have rounded corners, and/or be sized to protect a Groshong catheter, an intravenous access device, a Porta-cath (port) device, and/or a PICC Line. Square embodiments can measure 4 or 8 inches on a side.

  • Patent number: 7585285
Abstract: A novel ankle gapping device includes a lower leg engaging apparatus, a foot engaging apparatus, and a biasing member disposed between the lower leg engaging apparatus and the foot engaging apparatus. The leg engaging apparatus is adapted to securely engage a user's leg such that the leg engaging apparatus will remain stationary when the biasing member exerts an upward force thereon. The foot engaging apparatus is contoured to fit the user's foot. In a particular embodiment, the biasing member is a pneumatic biasing member, such as an inflatable tube that is actuated by a pump. As the pump provides compressed air (or some other fluid) to the biasing member, the pressure inside the biasing member increases, causing an increase in the volume of the biasing member. This pressure and volume increase exerts an upward force via the leg engaging apparatus to the lower leg, and a downward force via the foot engaging apparatus to the foot.

  • Patent number: 7549971
Abstract: A garment (1) for providing compressive forces to a torso to help eliminate or reduce swelling caused by an accumulation of lymph fluid in the torso region. An embodiment of the present invention includes an outer covering (10) of compression fabric, wide shoulder straps (22, 24), front and back panels of compression fabric (12, 14, 16, 18), a non-rolling rib band (72), axilla gussets (82, 84), and both front closure (40) and back closure (50). The garment may also include one or more princess seams (102, 104, 102?, 104?) so as to enable the front panel(s) to encapsulate and hold the user's breasts in place at the same time that compressive forces are applied, as well as one or more front shelves (132, 134) in the front panel(s) for providing upward compressive support to the breast tissue, thereby holding the tissue in a proper neutral position so that inward compressive forces acting on the tissue provide maximum effect.

Abstract: The present invention relates to protective apparatus suitable to provide users of electrical implantable medical devices protection from impacts. More specifically, the present invention relates to protective apparatus suitable to provide users of pacemakers, both internal and external, protection from impacts due to applied or external forces. The apparatus comprises a rigid or semi-rigid outer shell or layer, an impact absorbing inner pad or layer and, optionally, a recess for containing an external electronic device. The outer shell or layer provides impact and deformation resistance while distributing impact forces. The outer shell or layer is formed using a sufficiently thermally pliable material capable of molding to the body part containing, or in contact with, the electronic device. Electrical implantable medical devices are further protected by the inner pad or layer comprising a high density closed cell foam.

Abstract: An oral device for improving airway patency comprises a tongue constraint and a negative pressure source. The tongue constraint engages the patient's tongue to maintain a clear region below the palate in an oral cavity. By applying a negative pressure in the clear region, an airway behind the soft palate or tongue of the patient can be maintained. The tongue constraint is usually connected to an anchor. The anchor may be held between the patient's teeth or may engage the inferior surface of the palate. Another oral device for improving airway patency comprises a lateral tongue structure and a negative pressure source.
