  • Patent number: 10766161
Abstract: What is disclosed is an improved method of sawing wood and an improved sawmill capable of producing vertical grain lumber. Vertical grain lumber is a preferred lumber for use, for example, in trim applications. The improved method and improved sawmill both utilize a track having a carriage, the carriage has a vertical blade and a horizontal blade. The vertical blade and the horizontal blade travel on the carriage down the track. The log is then rotated for another length of lumber to be cut. In a preferred embodiment the sawmill utilizes a skewer for adjusting the log. In a preferred embodiment the log is held by a lathe that can be moved. In a preferred embodiment the log is placed on a skewer before it is engaged by the lathe.

Abstract: A cutting-apparatus is used to slice a plurality of timber-sections from a log-segment that has a wedge-shaped cross-section. Before the step of slicing the log-segment into the individual timber-sections, there is a prior step of cutting a shape and configuration into the bark-edge-region of the log-segment. This includes cutting the intended outer profiles of timber-sections that eventually will be sliced from the segment. Thereafter, slicing the elongated segment produces timber-sections which have their cross-sections and edges already fully formed by the prior cutting step. The shape and configuration, that is pre-cut into the bark-edge-region, comprises a plurality of edge-face-cuts.

Abstract: A combination gang saw and edger system cuts both cants and flitches into boards. Cants and flitches are fed singly, lengthwise into the system on an infeed conveyor. On the conveyor, the cant or flitch is scanned to produce a lengthwise cross-sectional profile. An optimizer determines whether the profile is for a cant or flitch and determines how the piece will be cut. A controller responsive to the optimizer directs the positioning of a first and second set of saws on a pivotably mounted saw arbor to cut either a cant or flitch, respectively. The boards cut from the cant or flitch are fed outfed from the system. • Patent number: 6374881
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for cutting a log into pieces. The log is cut into pieces with at least two nearly diametrical cuts (S1, S2), where the outermost lie essentially symmetrically around the pith of the stock. Each so-obtained plank is edged (S7, S8) with the outer side as a reference for the trimming direction. Two planks are formed through a cut (S9, S10) being placed near to the pith essentially parallel with each edged outer side. The cutting is performed on the outermost part of the log with the alignment cut (S3, S4) essentially parallel with the nearly diametrical cuts (S1, S2) preferably in the same operation as the cutting into pieces with the nearly diametrical cuts. Each block with the alignment cut (S3, S4) is conveyed through at least one twin-bladed saw, the cuts of which are inclined with respect to the base surface of the block, for example 30° and cut essentially radially symmetrically around the position of the pith.

  • Patent number: 6325119
Abstract: To produce square beams from tree trunks (13), a device is proposed in which a tree trunk (13) is first positioned by a centering device (4) such that the lengthwise axis (14) of the tree trunk (13) assumes essentially always the same stipulated position. The tree trunk (13) is then grasped by holders (11, 12) of a carriage (8) concentrically to the lengthwise axis (14), whereupon the centering device (4) is opened. Then the tree trunk (13) is guided through a band saw (5) and trimmed on the opposite sides, whereupon it is turned by 90° and the two other sides of the tree trunk (13) are trimmed.

  • Patent number: 6308756
Abstract: A lumber feeding mechanism for feeding lumber pieces laterally on a supply conveyor after scanning them with a light scanner to determine a reference axis for the optimum yield of boards. The lumber pieces are fed by dogs from a start position to a feed position in alignment with a feed conveyor which feeds such pieces longitudinally through a lumber edger with adjustable cutting saws. The feeding mechanism includes alternating sets of first and second dogs which are pivoted between a raised position for engagement with the rear edges of the lumber pieces to push such pieces from the start position to the feed position and a retracted position to enable the dogs to be returned to the start position passing on opposite sides or on the same side of the piece. Electrical actuation motors or fluid cylinder actuation motors with rotating output gears are used to pivot the dogs in response to a control signal produced by an electrical control system.

  • Patent number: 6286571
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of sawing a log in order to provide a high yield of vertical-grained pieces of lumber. According to the invention, this is achieved by sawing from the log not only pieces of lumber which are triangular or sector-shaped in cross-section but also essentially plane-parallel boards between adjacent pairs of the pieces which are triangular or sector-shaped in cross-section.

  • Patent number: 6178858
Abstract: This invention applies to a shape sawing system for sawing lumber pieces from a curved cant portion. A scanner scans the cant portion as it is conveyed on a conveyor system and inputs the scan data into a computer. The computer determines the curvature and position of the cant portion on the conveyor system. The conveyor system conveys the cant portion through side chippers and into a saw. The side chippers are independently laterally adjustable to follow the curvature of the cant portion. Guide members mounted strategic to the saw guide the cant portion into the saw. The saw is pivotally and laterally adjustable to follow the curvature of the cant portion to produce full length and partial length lumber pieces from the cant portion.

Abstract: The circular saw mill has an engine driven circular saw on a carriage. The carriage has a table that catches the sawn lumber and caries it back to the operator. The saw mill is laid out so one man can operate the mill, which eliminates the necessity for extra help. The set works for the saw mill has a hand lever at the operator station so the operator can advance the log towards the saw, controlling the thickness of the board to be cut. The log is held in a position for cutting by conventional dog asssemblies. The carriage is moved by a conventional chain and sprocket mounted on a hydraulic motor powered by a hydraulic power unit.

  • Patent number: 6062280
Abstract: An active edger includes an actively positionable gangsaw or a first end saw mounted on an arbor mounted within a stationary saw box. The gangsaw or first end saw is actively positionable relative to the saw box. In a second embodiment, the gangsaw or first end saw is mounted on an arbor in fixed translational and skewing relation relative to, and within, an actively positionable saw box. The actively positionable gangsaw is selectively actively laterally translatable and selectively actively rotatable so as to skew the gangsaw relative to the saw box. In both embodiments, the saw box receives a workpiece, longitudinally conveyed in a downstream direction, longitudinally into the gangsaw or first end saw from an upstream position.
