Patent number: 5882473Abstract: One end of a flexible positioning cord is fixed on one end side of a molding drum and the positioning cord is then pulled from the other end side thereby applying a tension to the positioning cord. The tensed positioning cord presses a joint of an extensible fabric into one of tooth part forming grooves to position it therein. Next, a tension member cord is wound in a spiral form and the tension applied to the positioning cord is then relieved to allow the removal of the positioning cord from the tooth part forming groove. Thereafter, an unvulcanized rubber sheet is wrapped around the extensible fabric wound with the tension member cord, and the resultant substance is then subjected to cure through the application of pressure thereby forming a cylindrical slab. The slab is cut into round pieces at specific widths thereby obtaining synchronous belts.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1997Date of Patent: March 16, 1999Assignee: Bando Chemical Industries, Ltd.Inventors: Michio Tanaka, Osamu Sakamoto

Patent number: 5837085Abstract: A method of making a toothed belt. A toothed belt is made by guiding a strip of fabric to pass through a thermosetting resin to soak it with thermosetting resin, then the soaked fabric is guided to pass through a pair of toothed rollers to form a series of toothed grooves thereon, thereafter the fabric is guided to pass around a plane roller and simultaneously rubber material is fed into the space between the outer peripheral surface of the plane roller and said fabric. Then, the fabric is wound onto a cylindrical mold having corresponding toothed grooves thereon and its two ends are glued together to loop around the cylindrical mold, then reinforcing cords and rubber sheets are covered over the fabric. Finally, the rubber material is vulcanized to form a toothed belt. Fabrics treated by the method demonstrate considerately greater flexibility or extendibility to comply with bending when under operation. Furthermore, the tooth contour of the belt will be more accurate than conventional ones.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1996Date of Patent: November 17, 1998Assignee: Industrial Technology Research InstituteInventors: Te-Cheng Chen, Mao-Song Lee, Ruey-Sheng Shih, Huo-Sheng Liao

Patent number: 5837080Abstract: A belt for use on a long nip press for dewatering a fibrous web includes a base assembled by spirally winding a prepared structure strip in a plurality of non-overlapping turns. Successive turns are abutted against and joined to those previously wound by sewing or otherwise bonding along the continuous spiral seam thus formed. The prepared structure strip may be a fabric strip woven from lengthwise and crosswise yarns, which may be monofilament yarns of a synthetic polymeric resin. The fabric strip may be of either a single- or multi-layer weave. At least one side of the base, namely, that side which will be on the inside of the belt in its endless loop form, and which slides over the arcuate pressure shoe component of the long nip press during its operation, is coated with a polymeric resin, such as polyurethane, to render it impervious to liquids, and especially to the oil used to lubricate the surface of the arcuate pressure shoe.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1996Date of Patent: November 17, 1998Assignee: Albany International Corp.Inventor: Erik Wilhelm Grondahl

Patent number: 5733399Abstract: An apparatus and method for manufacturing a synchronous drive belt or timing belt is disclosed. The method allows a belt with axially interlocked teeth to be manufactured. The method utilizes transfer molding, as opposed to compression molding, and involves an inflatable diaphragm which pushes rubber radially outwardly from a mandrel into a mold having teeth on an inner surface. The method includes the provision of a barrier layer which can be advantageously built into the belt to improve the transfer molding process.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1995Date of Patent: March 31, 1998Assignee: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber CompanyInventor: Douglas Bruce Wood

Patent number: 5534217Abstract: A method of making tooth belts by formation thereof about the outer peripheral surface of a building drum having a generally cylindrical configuration and a surface defining a series of parallel, tooth-shaped grooves. The belts are formed by wrapping a fabric circumferentially around the building drum and winding a cord of tensile material helically about the fabric. A layer of thermoplastic material is formed about the cord of tensile material, and a cord of shrink material is wrapped helically about the layer of thermoplastic material. The shrink material has a higher softening temperature than the thermoplastic material and will shrink at a temperature below its softening temperature. Pressurized steam is applied to the shrink material at a temperature below its softening temperature and between the softening temperature and the melting temperature of the thermoplastic material.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1994Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: Dayco Products, Inc.Inventors: Danny L. Patent number: 5437580Abstract: A door drive including a belt transmission incorporating a corrugated transmission belt, consisting of a strip of plastic material and adapted to be passed around a corrugated or toothed drive wheel which entrains the transmission belt, having along its longitudinal extension transversely extending corrugations of approximately sinodial or tooth shaped configuration and is made of a plastic strip permanently deformed by embossing is described. The belt has a laterally projecting side strip at least at one side of the corrugated portion, especially approximately at midlevel between the wave crests and wave troughs, to accommodate longitudinal pull. In this manner a satisfactory compromise is achieved between low manufacturing cost, little noise, and the magnitude of the driving force which can be transmitted by a corrugated belt from locking the drive gear. Likewise presented are a belt transmission and a garage door equipped with a transmission belt of the proposed type.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1993Date of Patent: August 1, 1995Inventor: Erich Doring
