  • Patent number: 11567259
Abstract: An intravascular or other 2D or 3D imaging apparatus can include a minimally-invasive distal imaging guidewire portion. A plurality of thin optical fibers can be circumferentially distributed about a cylindrical guidewire core, such as in an spiral-wound or otherwise attached optical fiber ribbon. A low refractive index coating, high numerical aperture (NA) fiber, or other technique can be used to overcome challenges of using extremely thin optical fibers. Coating and ribbonizing techniques are described. Also described are non-uniform refractive index peak amplitudes or wavelengths techniques for FBG writing, using a depressed index optical cladding, chirping, a self-aligned connector, optical fiber routing and alignment techniques for a system connector, and an adapter for connecting to standard optical fiber coupling connectors.

Abstract: A method of manipulating thermoplastic film to create integrated features and particularly relates to an improved method of manufacturing a packaging bag that is reclosable after initial opening. Multiple sections of thermoplastic film are layered on top of themselves to form a multi-layer portion of the thermoplastic film. The multi-layer portion may then be conglomerated into a unitary thicker portion of the film that can then be shaped into a closure strip. In order to form a bag, a second such closure strip may be made. The two closure strips are then aligned and the remaining open portions of the bag are then sealed such that the closure strips form a reclosable opening that may be opened and closed repeatedly.

Abstract: A structural polymeric composite includes a stiffening layer. The composite is made in a continuous extrusion process in which the stiffening layer is pulled through a cross-head die as a polymer is extruded over it. The layer includes a film or textile carrier, a filler of carbon fibers, fiberglass, organic fibers or minerals forming a mat. A binder may be dispersed over the mat and a second carrier applied. The mat is subjected to heat and pressure to soften the carriers and binder so they penetrate into the interstices of the filler and binds mechanically with them and the carriers and binder bind chemically with each other to form the stiffening layer. A polymer is then extruded over the stiffening layer, which may be used flat, provided with holes or punches for composite action with the polymer, formed into a profile, or segmented to provide spaced-apart stiffening layers.

Abstract: In the pultrusion of reinforced plastic profiles in strand form, the strands of the reinforcement are brought together in a positioning device and subsequently embedded in the plastic. The pulling of the strands of the reinforcement through the positioning device leads to an unwanted contraction and uncontrolled positioning of the reinforcement in the plastic profile. The invention envisages forming the positioning device by multiple successive positioning means, of which at least some positioning means can be periodically moved forward in the direction of production and also moved back counter to the direction of production. As a result, there is an alternating tensioning and compression of individual regions of the reinforcement. This makes exact positioning of the reinforcement in the plastic profile possible and prevents contraction of the reinforcement.

  • Patent number: 8303761
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a curved element made of composite material includes: preparing at least one dry, flat reinforcing layer with curved fibers. A resin film is combined with the dry, flat reinforcing layer, and heat and pressure are applied in controlled manner to bring about the infusion of the resin into the reinforcing layer and to obtain at least one layer of pre-infused material. At least one prepreg layer is prepared with straight fibers impregnated with resin compatible with the resin of the pre-infused material. The layer of pre-infused material and the prepreg layer are superimposed on one another to obtain a layered structure. The layered structure, arranged on a shaped support tool is subjected to a polymerization cycle to obtain the curved element.

Abstract: A method is provided for making an elastic composite for incorporation into a disposable absorbent garment. An elastic element applicator is provided that is configured to move a section of a continuous strand of elastic element generally about a plane. A first web of material is conveyed in a first web moving direction such that the first web intersects the plane. Then, the applicator is operated to move the elastic element about the plane, thereby applying the section of elastic element onto the first web along a direction generally transverse to the web moving direction and such that the first web draws the continuous elastic strand from the elastic element applicator as the first web is conveyed away from the plane. The elastic element applicator may be in the form of a spin cylinder or bracket that is operated to spin the elastic element about the moving first web, thereby applying the elastic element on the first web.

  • Patent number: 8114329
Abstract: Tapered layers of pre-cured composite material are integrated into a tapered, highly stressed laminate structure in order to provide improved compressive strength. The pre-cured composite material can advantageously be cured under tension as pultruded material, to further augment compressive strength. The thickness of composite layers can be tapered on their termination edges by mechanically abrading, chemical abrading, or other methods. Especially preferred embodiments include aircraft structural components such as wings, wing spars, wing skins, fuselage skins, rotor blades, propellers, and propeller blades. Preferred laminates can be constructed to have at least 6, 10, 30, 50, or 100 layers of material, and can have a maximum thickness of at least 0.15, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, or 5.0 inches.

  • Patent number: 8075722
Abstract: In a manufacturing apparatus of an absorbent product, extended elastic yarns to be a first middle elastic member and extended elastic yarns to be leg elastic members are bonded between a first sheet and a second sheet and arranged crossing each other in manufacturing an outer covering sheet. A first middle elastic member and an inclined part of the leg elastic members crossing the first middle elastic member are simultaneously and reliably cut in a crossing area of the both elastic members by first cutting blades tilted relatively to a direction where the first middle elastic member is positioned and second cutting blades tilted relatively to a direction where the inclined part is positioned. Thus, it is possible to easily form the outer covering sheet which maintains elasticity in a required portion and has high flexibility.

Abstract: A plurality of unidirectional sheets (30a, 30b, 30c) are superposed in different directions and they are bonded together. At least one of the unidirectional sheets is made by spreading a tow so as to obtain uniform thickness, width not less than 5 cm, and a weight of no more than 300 g/m2, cohesion being imparted to the sheet so as to enable it to be handled prior to being superposed with other sheets. Advantageously, the unidirectional sheets are made of carbon fibers and are obtained by spreading out large tows.

Abstract: A method for processing a composite includes consolidating a section of a continuous length of a first feedstock together with a section of a continuous length of a second feedstock to form a consolidated section. The first feedstock is made of a first composite layer that is releasably bonded to a first release layer, and the second feedstock is made of a second composite layer that is releasably bonded to a second release layer.
