Abstract: A multi-layered shingle adapted to be positioned with other similar shingles in an overlapping arrangement on a roof to yield a simulated wooden shake roof covering comprising a headlap portion and a butt portion. The butt portion comprises a series of multi-layered tabs. All the tabs have the same number of layers and each multi-layered tab (a) is separated from the next adjacent multi-layered tab or tabs by a space or spaces, respectively, and (b) comprises an uppermost layer and at least two layers underlying the uppermost layer. Each underlying layer is laminated to the layer above it to form a multi-layered laminated composite. The laminated composite is integral with the headlap portion and the top surface of the uppermost layer of each tab is coplanar with the top surface of the headlap portion. The invention also includes an apparatus and a process for the continuous manufacture of the shingles of the invention.

  • Patent number: 6350336
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a press fabric for a paper machine includes the attachment of a strip of top laminate layer material to a base fabric using a heat-activated adhesive film. The top laminate layer material may be a woven fabric, a nonwoven mesh, or a thermoplastic sheet material, and, in any case, has the heat-activated adhesive film bonded to one of its two sides. The strip of top laminate layer material and heat-activated adhesive film together form a multi-component strip, which is spiralled onto the outer surface of the base fabric, with the side of the strip of top laminate layer material having the heat-activated adhesive film against the outer surface, in a closed helix, and bonded thereto with heat and pressure. The portions of the multi-component strip overhanging the lateral edges of the base fabric are then trimmed, and a staple fiber batt is needled into and through the top laminate layer formed by the multi-component strip to firmly attach it to the base fabric.

The process comprises selecting at least two optimized features characteristic of each layer (its thickness and the winding angle of the fibers for example) by starting from an initial tube selected a priori. Through small deviations applied to the parameters, the relations between small deviations applied to the parameters and the variations of the resulting limit elongations and stresses are determined, as well as the inverse relations relating the variations of the limit elongations and stresses to the parameter deviations. Knowing these inverse relations allows, in one or several stages, to find out the deviations to be applied in order to make up the measurable differences between the limit elongations and stresses of the optimized tube and the tube selected a priori.

A standard web of reflective face stock, adhesive, and first liner is coated with a second adhesive layer (on the first liner) and a second liner is applied. The web is printed and dried, as with UV ink and by UV drying. Sequential numbers can be applied by printing, as can an expiration year, etc. The web is then die cut to separate a matrix containing reflective stock, first adhesive, first liner, and second adhesive, from surrounding printed decals, the decals spaced from each other and connected by the second liner (e.g., 1.5 mil silicone coated polyester).

Abstract: A fully absorbable prosthesis (1) for the repair of damaged ligaments and/or tendons in the form of a multilayer spiral roll comprising the following spiral layers: a foraminous layer (2) of a synthetic bioabsorbable material; a bioabsorbable film (3); and a layer (4) of a bioabsorbable biopolymer sponge. The invention also provides a method of making such a prosthesis, comprising the steps of: providing a laminate of a foraminous layer of bioabsorbable material and a bioabsorbable film; coating the laminate with a layer of an aqueous gel comprising a bioabsorbable polymer; rolling up the laminate and the gel layer into a spiral roll, followed by drying the gel to form a layer of bioabsorbable sponge. The foraminous layer (2) preferably comprises a synthetic bioabsorbable polymer having high tensile strength. The bioabsorbable film (3) and sponge layer (4) preferably comprise a chemotactic biopolymer such as collagen.

Abstract: A double-sided differentially adhesive adhesive tape is applied to the winding core of a web processing machine, e.g. for producing light-sensitive photographic film, by a dispensing unit carried on a linearly movable support. In the unit, first and second tape applicator rollers are mounted for rotation on the support for engagement upon movement of the support to operative position with the core periphery at peripherally spaced apart points thereon, Tape extends from a supply roll to the first and then to the second roller for application of a winding thereof to the core upon rotation of the latter. The second roller is mounted on the support for limited independent movement after application of the tape winding to a position separated from the core and from the tape, such movement being in a direction generally tangential of the core periphery to avoid lifting the tape from the core.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing filter elements, in which sealant does not get onto the rolling claw and rolling of the roll filter paper is made easy. A long roll filter paper having laterally oriented filter parts for filtering, the filter parts being open on the inflow side of the roll filter paper and closed on the outflow side of the roll filter paper, is rolled. During rolling, a sealant is applied to the surface of the roll filter paper in a narrow longitudinal strip, in such a way that the sealant does not make contact with the rolling claw. The roll-start end of the roll filter paper is gripped with the rolling claw during rolling. The rolling claw is made up of 2 or 4 rolling bars having the shape of the parts produced when a cylinder is split into two halves along its axis.

Abstract: A laminated material for preventing fire in the engine room of a ship has a base layer made of a woven or nonwoven fabric of specific fibers, and aluminum foil or the like bonded to at least one side of the base layer. Since aluminum foil or the similar foil having an excellent sealing ability and a property of plastic deformability is bonded to one or both of the opposite surfaces of the base layer having excellent heat resistance, excellent oil resistance and sufficient strength, defects of the fabric and those of aluminum foil are eliminated, and synergistic benefits can be obtained. In a method for preventing fire in the engine room of a ship, the laminated material is cut out to obtain a laminated tape and a laminated sheet, which are used in combination to cover portions having various configurations. According to this method, even unskilled persons can securely cover portions from which oil is likely to spout.

Abstract: A method for connection of a bell tube to a distal end of an internal fishline type fishing rod. The bell tube and the distal pipe member of the fishing rod are integrated into a single body during production of the distal pipe member, thus to increase the connection force between them. The material for the distal pipe member is wound about a pipe production mandrel such that a distal end of the mandrel remains bare. The bare distal end of the mandrel is inserted into the small diameter section of the bell tube having at least one annular groove thereabout such that ends of both the bell tube and the pipe member come into intimate contact with each other about the mandrel. Connection material, the same material as that of the pipe member, is wound about the bell tube and the pipe member simultaneously such that the connection material fills the annular grooves of the bell tube.

Abstract: A composite structure of elastic and viscoelastic components in which dynamic loads are effectively damped by transmission through the viscoelastic components. The structure includes a continuous sandwich comprised either of a single elastic layer enclosed by two viscoelastic layers or of a single viscoelastic layer enclosed by two elastic layers such that the sandwich has little stiffness in any intended direction of loading, and two segmented elastic layers having stiffness in a desired loading direction. The segmented layers have alternating segments and gaps and are disposed one on each side of the viscoelastic layer in such a manner that the gaps of one segmented layer overlap the segments of the other segmented layer. Dynamic loads in the loading direction are transmitted back and forth from one segmented layer to the other, through the continuous sandwich layer containing the viscoelastic material, which thereby provides a high degree of damping.

These sheets are adhered and layered to each other either by a melting or with an adhesive or by layering without each other with adhering these sheets to each other. Then, the porous sheet thus layered is plated at a high current density by forcibly applying plating liquid to the layered sheet in a direction substantially perpendicular thereto in a plating tank, or by vacuum evaporation while the layered sheet is being transported inside the vapor deposition vacuum container enclosed by a cooking tank through a cooling roller mounted therein. The metallic porous sheet formed according the above-described method is preferably used as the electrode of a battery.
