  • Patent number: 5057251
Abstract: An improved contact body element, for use in forming the fill of a gas and liquid contact apparatus to produce interaction between a gas and liquid flowing through the apparatus, of the type having formed sheet members with a longitudinally extending edge of the sheet member folded over on a longitudinally extending surface of the corrugated member. This provides a strip of sheet material secured in overlapping relationship to the surface of the formed sheet member forming a full gap therebetween. An adhesive with intumescent qualities, which are triggered by heat, is applied within the fold such that the longitudinal edge and longitudinal surface in cooperation with the adhesive form a substantially rigid ply that is substantially resistant to erosion and can withstand higher compressive forces and which will expand in the event of fire, to block the openings between the sheets. The sheet edge may be slitted along its length to facilitate this blockage.

  • Patent number: 5046710
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for making a leaflet having fold lines and cross folds normal to the fold lines and with an adhesive adhering a lip portion of a long leg of the leaflet to a short leg of the leaflet to avoid leaving a loose edge on the leaflet. Sheets are conveyed in a first direction to a first folding at a first folding station, and then a second conveyor feeds the sheets to travel at right angles to a cross folder at a second folding station. The cross folds are made to a lip portion on a long leg and adhesive applicator applies adhesive to the lip portion which is adhered by the adhesive to a folded panel to form a leaflet having fold lines and cross folds at its edges, thereby eliminating any loose edges. Loose edges may open the leaflet during a high speed conveyance thereof.

  • Patent number: 5030303
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for forming a disposable garment with a waste containment pocket defined by a pair of barrier cuffs located on opposed sides of the centerline of the body contacting layer of the garment inboard of its elasticized leg openings. Each barrier cuff is formed by applying a pattern of adhesive alongside of an elastic member maintained in tension on the body contacting layer or a separate strip of material, and then intermittently diverting the path of the adhesive pattern such as by a jet of air so that the adhesive contacts and bonds the elastic member to the body contacting layer or separate strip at longitudinally spaced locations therealong. When the tension on the elastic member is released, gathers or folds are formed in the barrier cuff at the locations where the elastic member was adhered thereto which help the garment conform to the shape of the wearer and prevent the passage of body exudates to the elasticized leg openings.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for joining films by heat sealing, where these films are in rolls (9) and in particular a few microns thick. In a first stage, this process consists in spreading out a first film (1) on an assembly table (5) while hemming one of its longitudinal edges with a junction tape (3) and a positioning tape (4) sealed on that side of the junction tape (4) which is opposite the film. Once the desired film length has been reached, the film is transversely cut off and the positioning tape (4) then is used to handle this first film (1) and to assure its alignment with a segment of the film (2) packed on the roll (9). The second joining stage then consists in spreading out the film (2) on the table (5) while sealing a longitudinal edge of said film (2) to the outer side of the junction tape (3) following separation of the positioning tape (4) from this junction tape (3).

  • Patent number: 4806184
Abstract: A hand-held wallpaper applicator for supporting and applying sheet material to a wall or other surface comprises a hand held support member having a hand grip portion and a flat generally rectangular base portion with an elongate separable roller assembly rotatably and removably carried by the support member. The roller assembly is adapted to receive and releasably secure one end of a strip of wallcovering material thereon and to receive the remaining strip material thereon in a rolled condition. A laterally adjustable elongate tubular pressure contact member is removably carried at the forward end of the support member parallel with the roller assembly for contacting and applying pressure to the wallcovering material as it is scrolled off the roller assembly. A tensioning mechanism on the support member applies resilient pressure to the material rolled on the roller assembly and maintains the remaining material in the rolled condition as the material is being scrolled off the roller assembly.

  • Patent number: 4778545
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a fillet to fill a void between two L-shaped structural members which reinforce a composite material skin. A leg of one of the structural members is placed against a leg of the other member, with the second legs of the two members extending outwardly from the adjacent legs. The void is formed between the adjacent rounded outer edges between the legs of each of the members. The apparatus measures the radii of curvature of each of the rounded edges along the length of the member, stores the radii data in an electronic memory, and calculates the area of the void as a function of length along the member. The apparatus then controls a knife to trim an edge from a composite tape so that the trimmed tape has a cross-sectional area equal to the area of the void. The apparatus then forms the fillet from the trimmed tape.

  • Patent number: 4765854
Abstract: A method of sequentially producing a plurality of disposable headdresses in which the edge of the cap fabric has been folded inward around a peripherally extending elastic cord to provide a smooth edge which contacts the wearer, and provides superior adhesion between the elastic cord and the cap fabric by utilizing an elastic cord and fabric which are coated with or made of thermoplastically compatible materials. The elastic cord and fabric are assembled by passing the fabric and the cord through a guide system which turns the fabric side edges down from a horizontal plane to a vertical plane while an edge guide lays the elastic cord under the fabric, and then turns the fabric under the cord to sandwich in the folded edge. Warm air preheaters heat the elastic cord and the fabric before completing the fabric fold around the cord. The folded edges with the cord inside pass between dual heat wheels which physically press the fabric to the cord and also seal the fabric edge to the inside of the crown.

The panel has an opening therein and the portion of the metal adjacent the opening is rolled so that the end thereof engages under the inner surface of the panel in a smooth roll such that the free edge is not directly exposed to the contents in the container on which the closure is placed. A composite panel including a layer of plastic is bonded to the central panel and the outer surface of the central panel by heat fusion of plastic. The composite panel includes a tab that is formed integrally thereof and initially is folded back upon itself bringing the surfaces of the tab which bear the plastic into contact so that the two portions of the tab are bonded to one another to provide a double strength tab.

  • Patent number: 4732630
Abstract: A process and apparatus for fabricating expandable honeycomb materials disclosed. The continuous length of material is folded along opposite side portions thereof into a generally flat tubular form having upper lower layers. Adhesive is then applied along the length of the continuous material by first heating the material, applying the adhesive in a liquid state to the heated material, and then cooling the material to solidify the adhesive. The folded tubular material with solified adhesive lines thereon is then wound about a rack in such a manner that the tubular material is deposited in a plurality of continuous layers one on another with the lines of adhesive being disposed between adjacent layers. The wound layers are then radially cut and placed in a vertically aligned stack while they are removed from the rack. The vertically stacked layers are then heated to a temperature sufficient to activate the lines of adhesive and bond the layers together.
