  • Patent number: 5167740
Abstract: A filter insert of nonwoven material in the form of a pleated pack is self-supporting and consists of thermally weldable nonwoven (1). Each of the two outside ends (3) of the pleated pack (2) is hemmed by the nonwoven material (1) forming the pleats, which is folded over in the same direction and at the same time is fixed in tight contact to the corresponding folded of the adjacent pleat end. At the same time the nonwoven material projects beyond the near crease of the adjacent pleat end by 0.5 to 1.5 times the pleat spacing. For manufacture, the flat filter material (1) is first pleated and then a defined pleat spacing (7) is produced by drawing it apart to a limited extent. Then the two outside edges (8) of the pleated pack are gripped between comb-like tools (9) entering pincer-wise into the pleating at top and bottom, leaving the filter material projecting beyond the tools on each side by 1.5 to 2.5 times the pleat spacing (7).

Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for forming a disposable garment with a waste containment pocket defined by a pair of barrier cuffs located on opposed sides of the centerline of the body contacting layer of the garment inboard of its elasticized leg openings. Each barrier cuff is formed by applying a pattern of adhesive alongside of an elastic member maintained in tension on the body contacting layer or a separate strip of material, and then intermittently diverting the path of the adhesive pattern such as by a jet of air so that the adhesive contacts and bonds the elastic member to the body contacting layer or separate strip at longitudinally spaced locations therealong. When the tension on the elastic member is released, gathers or folds are formed in the barrier cuff at the locations where the elastic member was adhered thereto which help the garment conform to the shape of the wearer and prevent the passage of body exudates to the elasticized leg openings.

  • Patent number: 4904332
Abstract: Apparatus for producing a continuous sequence of disposable headdresses in which the edge of the cap fabric has been folded inward around a peripherally extending elastic cord to provide a smooth edge which contacts the wearer, and provides superior adhesion between the elastic cord and the cap fabric by utilizing an elastic cord and fabric which are coated with or made of thermoplastically compatible materials. The elastic cord and fabric are assembled by passing the fabric and the cord through a guide system which turns the fabric side edges down from a horizontal plane to a vertical plane while an edge guide lays the elastic cord under the fabric, and then turns the fabric under the cord to sandwich in the folded edge. Warm air preheaters heat the elastic cord and the fabric before completing the fabric fold around the cord. The folded edges with the cord inside pass between dual heat wheels which physically press the fabric to the cord and also seal the fabric edge to the inside of the crown.

  • Patent number: 4885190
Abstract: A process and apparatus for fabricating expandable honeycomb materials disclosed. The continuous length of material is folded along opposite side portions thereof into a generally flat tubular form having upper lower layers. Adhesive is then applied along the length of the continuous material by first heating the material, applying the adhesive in a liquid state to the heated material, and then cooling the material to solidify the adhesive. The folded tubular material with solidified adhesive lines thereon is then wound about a rack in such a manner that the tubular material is deposited in a plurality of continuous layers one on another with the lines of adhesive being disposed between adjacent layers. The wound layers are then radially cut and placed in a vertically aligned stack while they are removed from the rack. The vertically stacked layers are then heated to a temperature sufficient to activate the lines of adhesive and bond the layers together.

  • Patent number: 4861405
Abstract: A laminated continuous sheet which, when cut, forms individual disposable diapers is moved at high speed in the direction of the length thereof, whereby in an air zone of predetermined thickness disposed on at least a predetermined surface of the laminated continuous sheet, there is produced with the travel of the laminated continuous sheet an air flow having a velocity gradient such that the speed of the air flow increases as the predetermined surface is approached. Baby powder is fed at a position within the air zone of predetermined thickness so that it contacts the air zone. By utilizing a decreasing-pressure phenomenon produced by the air flow having a velocity gradient described above in which the pressure decrease as the predetermined surface of the laminated continuous sheet is approached, baby powder is caused to adhere to the predetermined surface as it is drawn toward the predetermined surface of the laminated continuous sheet.

Abstract: A moving web is folded at predetermined lengths at its opposite side portions so that the opposite side portions are opposed to each other at a predetermined angle with its central portion. Then part of each of the opposite folded portions is outwardly folded. These foldings occur so that a first folding line and a second folding line being opposed to each other at each side of the web include portions in non-parallel relationship. Elastic bands are affixed onto the web along the second opposite folded portions longitudinally and substantially in parallel to each other. When the web is flattened from the folded condition, the paired elastic band affixed onto the web at its oppsite sides each has a diagonal orientation symmetrically with respect to the direction in which the web moves.
