    Abstract: A composite synthetic leather sheet material and method of manufacture thereof is disclosed. The composite sheet material comprises outer thermoplastic polymeric layers bonded to opposite faces of a reinforcing textile fabric, preferably a porous woven fabric of high strength material, by an intermediate polymeric layer which fills the interstices of the fabric and has opposite surfaces disposed adjacent the fabric surfaces to engage and firmly secure the outer thermoplastic polymeric layers in the composite sheet. One of the outer thermoplastic layers is foamed to a relatively high degree and the outer surface of the foam is mechanically abraded or buffed to provide a suede-like leather appearance thereto. The other outer thermoplastic layer may be foamed and provided with an embossed leather-like surface appearance. The sheet material product is reversible in use, completely heat-sealable, flow-moldable, and printable on both sides for subsequent manufacture of synthetic leather good articles.

    Abstract: Glass fiber reinforced plastic laminates including randomly oriented glass fibers, embedded within unsaturated polyester resins, are provided over at least one surface thereof with a gel coat, essentially free of the glass fibers. The gel coat is at least partially cured on a transparent carrier film by exposing gel coat resins to ultraviolet radiation. Thereafter randomly oriented glass fibers and unsaturated polyester resin syrup are applied onto the gel coat to form the resulting laminate. The gel coat is selected to provide superior weathering characteristics and resistance to deterioration from ultra-violet radiation exposure, e.g., sunlight, when compared to the corresponding properties of the unsaturated polyester resin in which the randomly oriented glass fibers are embedded.

The molding resin is aprotic and has a functionality as regards unsaturatedness which is between the values 2 and 6. A suitable molding resin contains mono-, tri- or tetra esters of acylic acid.

    Abstract: A process is described for the manufacture of a void-free multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB). The process includes the steps of, first, laminating one or both sides of a PCB provided with circuitry details, to a cast thermosetting resin layer comprising essentially a B-staged, resin system solid at room temperatures but having a resin flow, under standard curing conditions, greater than a prepreg layer containing glass cloth impregnated by the B-staged resin system. The initial laminating step proceeds at temperatures and/or times substantially below curing conditions to form a prefilled PCB laminate wherein said cast thermosetting resin layer remains B-staged and which is very low in voids. Secondly, one or more of the prefilled PCB laminates are assembled between prepreg layers, each prepreg layer comprising glass cloth impregnated by a second B-staged thermosetting resin compatible with, or the same as, said B-staged thermosetting resin of said cast thermosetting resin layer.

    Abstract: An improved machine and method for stiffening a selected portion of a sheet-like member generally flattens that portion, next deposits on a chill plate matrix an adhesive hot melt deposit of mostly uniform thickness except for a margin of added thickness for slower hardening, and then causes the matrix with impact to press all of the adhesive, while the added thickness margin is still softer than the uniform adhesive thickness, against the flattened portion of the member, thus transferring the adhesive to that portion, the added thickness margin being exuded laterally and hence taperingly reduced to provide diminishing stiffness toward an edge merging with the member.The machine and method have particular advantage in stiffening a toe portion of a shoe upper, rendering the instep margin of the vamp or a toe piece free of irregularity, and assuring ultimate comfort for wearing in an assembled shoe.

    Abstract: A process for fabricating polyimide membrane x-ray lithography masks is described. Thin membrane of polyimide is formed by spinning polyamic acid on a glass substrate and polymerizing in situ. The glass substrate acts as a holder and efficient heat sink during formation of gold absorber patterns on top of the polyimide. A support ring is then bonded to the polyimide, and the glass etched in dilute HF. Optically smooth polyimide membranes with thicknesses from 0.5 to 5 .mu.m are readily achieved. The method and resulting product is not limited to the above materials or to masks.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a process for making a water vapor permeable pressure sensitive adhesive material which comprises forming on a surface which is poorly wettable (or non-wettable) by water, a continuous coating of an aqueous emulsion based pressure sensitive adhesive having dispersed therein a water immiscible organic liquid which is more volatile than water and which does not break the emulsion; leaving the coating at room temperature until pores develop and reach a size such that the material when dried will have a water vapor permeability of from 2000 to 10,000 units as hereinafter defined; drying the coating at a higher temperature and transferring the adhesive mass to a water vapor permeable backing material. The pressure sensitive adhesive material finds use in the medical and surgical fields and especially in first-aid dressings and tapes.

    Abstract: The process according to the invention uses a matrix engraved by any means, the tracks being perfectly centered on this matrix in relation to a center of rotation. The matrix is placed in a vacuum chamber on a supporting axis capable of rotating and is coated over its entire surface with a polymerizable material which is free from air bubbles and which does not adhere to the constituent material of the matrix. A substrate previously drilled at its center, balanced and coated with a material to which the polymerizable material adheres, is placed on the supporting shaft and held at a distance from the matrix. The vacuum is established in the chamber and the substrate is brought into contact with the matrix. On completion of polymerization outside or inside the chamber, the substrate carrying the moulded resin is readily separated from the matrix.

In a preferred embodiment, an additional well spaced from the removal region is employed for producing an additional membrane, which is continuously removed from its liquid surface in contiguous contact with the liquid-contact surface of the first membrane.

    Abstract: A decorative laminate is formed by placing an adhesive impregnated or coated decorative sheet on a core section, applying a polyester resin composition containing a peroxide catalyst and a photosensitizer to a release material and gelling the polyester resin composition by subjecting it to actinic light and placing the gelled polyester resin backed with release material on the impregnated or coated sheet supported by the core material and heat-pressing to form a composite structure. The release material is then removed from the cured polyester resin layer. Alternatively the polyester resin composition may be applied to the decorative sheet gelled with actinic light and then placed on the core sample, placing a release material on the gelled polyester resin composition and heat-pressing the composite. The resulting laminate is abrasion and stain resistant.

    Abstract: Process for making a synthetic suede product, two rolls at a time, each roll consisting of a web of fibrous material, to the upper side of which is attached outwardly extending polyurethane fibers. The process consists of continuously feeding two thin films of polyurethane into the nips formed by two rotating heated cylinders wherein the two feed materials are forced into two flexible molding bands provided with a multiplicity of molding cavities by pressing the film against a heated silicone roller. Most of the urethane film fills the cavities and forms a fibrous surface when removed, leaving a very thin layer in molten state which becomes glued to the upper layers of fibrous webs which are passed into a second set of nips formed by two rotating heated cylinders. The fibrous material or fabric may be man-made such preformed woven, knitted, foamed, non-woven, spun bonded, spun laced, etc.

The invention overcomes the difficulty of the top coat being lifted from the release substrate in numerous areas while other areas remain firmly attached giving the so-called "hoar-frost" effect.
