  • Patent number: 6153047
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing, on an automatic continuous basis, successive album pages, each of which consists of a base sheet having a reinforcing tape bound thereto in overlapping relation with each side edge thereof, is disclosed. The apparatus includes a registration station for guiding and initially folding a pair of tapes in proper laterally spaced relation to receive a base sheet therebetween. A compression station is positioned downstream from the registration station and includes a pair of releasable clamps having engagement surfaces for completing the folding of the pairs of tapes into adhering relation with respective side edges of the base sheet thereby forming a web of album pages interconnected by the pair of tapes. A drive mechanism includes a servo-motor driven linear actuator for pulling at least one of the base sheets and the web of album pages downstream.

  • Patent number: 5643396
Abstract: This invention pertains to apparatus for use in constructing a garment including a stretched elastic. Specifically, the invention contemplates incorporating stretched elastic into a continuous web, including one or more segments which exert retractive forces in directions counterproductive to the function of either the web, the garment, or both, and nullifying that portion of the stretched elastic which would be counterproductive. The elastics may be cut at appropriate loci. The stretch may be intermittently reduced or eliminated on one or more selected ones of the elastics as the elastics are incorporated into the web. A special coating may be used on the processing rolls to maintain the width dimension of the web at loci disposed after incorporation of elastic stretched across the transverse dimension of the web. Transverse bonds may be formed on the web using a rotary carrying drum, and energy application devices which rotate with the drum, to increase bond forming time.

Abstract: Disclosed is a laminating machine for applying a protective laminate to the edge of any paper or paperboard product such as an index or paperboard card. The machine includes grippers for retaining opposed edges of a cut laminate and an elongate crimping mechanism for engaging the laminate between the grippers and for pressing the laminate against the nip of a pair of pressure rollers. The elongate crimping mechanism is withdrawn and an edge of the paper or paperboard product is fed to the elongate crimp created in the laminate. The paper and laminate are then fed between heated pressure rollers to effect lamination. The above steps can be repeated to apply a laminate to two or more edges of a paper or paperboard product. When two or more adjacent edges are to be laminated, a cutting mechanism cuts the laminate at angles to form miter joints at the corners.

Abstract: A continuous filter tow is advanced through a combined wrapping and condensing station by an endless belt, and the thickness of the belt decreases as a result of wear. The resistance which the condensed tow offers to the flow of air is measured by a pneumatic detector at the aforementioned station, and the accuracy of such measurement is affected by decreasing thickness of the belt as a result of increasing rate of escape of testing fluid along the belt. Therefore, the thickness of the belt is monitored and signals which are generated to denote the thickness of the belt are used to correct signals which are generated to denote the resistance to the flow of air. The correction involves modifying the signals denoting the resistance to the flow of air to denote a more pronounced resistance proportionally with decreasing thickness of the belt.

Abstract: An improved method and related apparatus are provided for making convertible top for automobiles and the like, wherein top deck and side quarter panels of fabric-based material cooperatively form rain gutters extending along the opposite sides of the top deck panel. The top deck and each side quarter panel for a convertible top are initially sewn together in overlying relation near one side margin whereupon the side margin is folded over with the side quarter panel folded back upon itself to define a pair of directly overlying side edge strips. This folded side margin is advanced through a folding fixture adapted to insert an elongated rod substantially into the base of the fold between the side edge strips of the side quarter panel. An adhesive material is applied between the side edge strips which are then pressed together to obtain a secure bond therebetween and to lock the rod in place.

Abstract: A primary cell separator basket is formed from sheet material folded upon itself to form a basket bottom at the fold and bonded along margins in face to face contact extending from the fold. One or both sheet faces between the bonded margins are crowned outwardly to preform the basket and open its top. Basket preforms can be made in strips by longitudinally folding strip sheet material, crowning the material at intervals along the strip length and bonding the material in face to face relationship transverse of the strip length along the strip length in regions which fall between the crowns.

Abstract: The roofing module of the present invention is comprised of a sheet of thermoplastic material which has opposed side margins that are bent upwardly at 90.degree. with respect to the body of the sheet to provide joinder tabs. The module is formed by transporting a flat sheet of the material between a pair of inwardly-facing radiant heaters which are focused on a line which the sheet will be bent about in order to soften the sheet along that line. After the sheet is softened along the fold line it is transported through a bending section comprised of a series of die rollers which cause the margin to progressively be bent upwardly to the desired orientation.

Abstract: A bonded ASP cable includes a multiconductor core which is filled with a waterproofing material. The core is enclosed by a plastic layer (28) which is flooded with a waterproofing material. Wrapped longitudinally about the plastic layer is a corrugated inner shield (31) having a longitudinal seam (35) and having an outer surface covered with a waterproofing material. The inner shield is enclosed by a corrugated outer shield (36) which has an overlapped longitudinal seam (38) and which has an outer surface coated with a layer of an adhesive material. As the outer shield is being formed, a sealant material is introduced into engagement with the inner shield in the vicinity of the longitudinal edge portions of the outer shield. Then as the longitudinal edge portions of the outer shield are overlapped and engaged with each other, the sealant material is caused to flow into cavities between the two shields adjacent to the seam of the outer shield to form a gasket (66).

The square filler is used as a contact medium for aerobic or anaerobic treatment of sewage. The square filler is made of synthetic resin net sheet or net tube of which a plurality of net layers are formed, and melt-bonding is applied to at least one spot on each layer for fixing all layers together. An apparatus for manufacturing square fillers flattens the net sheet or net tube for forming net layers with the application of pressure, intermittently feeds the flattened net sheet or net tube in the longitudinal axial direction thereof, and heats the net sheet or net tube for softening during transfer thereof. The heated net sheet or net tube is locally pressed with projections for melt-bonding so that net layers are locally melt-bonded to each other, thereby square fillers having net layers fixed by solidification thereof are obtained.

  • Patent number: 4606784
Abstract: In the manufacture of packing containers from laminated material contact between the inner layer of the material and the contents is avoided by doubling up the cut edges present in the packing container. It has proved to be difficult to perform a secure folding and sealing of the folded edge without damage to the material, since the outer, water-tight layer of the material consists of very thin, heat-sensitive thermoplastic. This difficulty is overcome by carrying out the folding and sealing of the edge of the material web gradually while at the same time supplying heat or glue. By supplying the sealing-promoting agent as late as possible during the course of folding, damage to the material as well as to the folding arrangement is avoided.

  • Patent number: 4557787
Abstract: In a thermo-cementing and folding machine, a gear pump operates to supply adhesive at a rate which is dependent upon the speed of rotation of a main drive shaft, by which workpiece feeding means of the machine is driven. The machine has also a facility for varying the rate of feed of a workpiece by the workpiece feeding means without varying the speed of rotation of the main drive shaft. The ratio of the rotational speed of the shaft to the operating rate of the pump is varied in response to variation of the workpiece feed rate. This arrangement is achieved by computer control, the gear pump being driven by a stepping motor for this purpose. In addition, at the end of each work cycle, use of a stepping motor facilitates "suck back" of adhesive, and a "fast forward" adhesive upon initiation of the next work cycle.
