  • Patent number: 5605590
Abstract: The method includes sealing the stator bar end connections from within the stator bar end fitting. Particularly, a low viscosity epoxy is initially applied from within the chamber of the end fitting by use of a boroscope and a syringe-type applicator, the low viscosity epoxy being applied to all joints between the adjacent strands of the stator bar and between the fitting and the outermost strands of the stator bar. A high viscosity epoxy is then applied over the low viscosity epoxy using the boroscope and applicator to provide a thick barrier seal between the liquid coolant in the chamber and the brazing material. The epoxy is then cured. The process ensures that the brazing material is isolated from the liquid coolant by the barrier seal whereby potential leaks are prevented and partially developed leaks or leaks extant are arrested because sealant material is disposed at the liquid coolant/braze interface.

Abstract: In a method and system for repairing a resin-impregnated article having one or more dry spots or resin-depleted areas, a mold release is used to coat all surfaces of the defective article, except for the resin-depleted areas and a border area surrounding and contiguous to each resin-depleted area. The coated article is then placed within a mold cavity defined by a two-piece mold and corresponding in shape and size to the article. A plurality of shims are interposed in the parting line between the two halves of the mold, creating a first gap within the parting line and a second gap between the surfaces of the article and the walls defining the mold cavity. A gasket is also seated between the two halves of the mold to seal the mold cavity, and a vacuum pump is coupled to the mold cavity to evacuate the cavity to a negative pressure.

A sealant applicator in the form of a push snake is provided which may be inserted into the pipe through a standard tap fitting. Thick or viscous sealant is pumped down through the snake and is thereafter applied radially outward to the inside surfaces of the pipe by a spinning applicator tip. Flaps may be attached to the spinning applicator tip so that the thick sealant is trowelled into place. The applicator tip may be rotated with compressed gas which may be compressed methane gas drawn from the gas main. A centralizer is preferably employed to centralize the applicator head in place during application of the sealant. The flaps may also be used to clean the pipe prior to the application of the sealant.

  • Patent number: 5425833
Abstract: The present invention discloses a semiconductor chip removal method of removing a semiconductor chip having thereon a chip electrode from a board having thereon a board electrode wherein the semiconductor chip is bonded to the board with a resin and these chip and board electrodes are connected together electrically by a wire. This semiconductor chip removal method comprises the following steps of: (a) cutting the bonding wire into two pieces by a cutter that presses its cutting edge against the base of the bonding wire on the board electrode's side; (b) separating the semiconductor chip from the board by a chip remover that forces the semiconductor chip sideways, with the adhesive strength of the resin weakened by the application of heat thereto; and (c) removing the semiconductor chip together with a piece of the bonding wire left on the chip electrode's side.

  • Patent number: 5423931
Abstract: In a method of removing a component from a wiring board to which the component is attached by heat-softenable resin, the improvement is provided of, after softening of the resin by heat and removal of the component, removing residual resin remaining on the board at the location of the component by application of ultraviolet laser radiation having an intensity sufficient to decompose and disperse said residual resin. This can be done without damaging the wiring on the board so that the wiring is re-usable to attach a further electronic component at the same location. Excessive heating of the board can be avoided by measures such as applying a pre-load to the component during softening so that it moves when sufficiently softened, and monitoring the softening.

  • Patent number: 5413662
Abstract: The invention comprises a method that utilizes a plurality of corrugated panels from used shipping containers to make a web that is then able to be cut into suitable shapes to be used in the construction of corrugated cardboard shipping pallets. The process begins with opening or flattening the used cardboard boxes and then removing the end flaps and opening along the manufacturer's seams to form a plurality of sheets. These sheets are then cut to form a plurality of sheets of uniform widths. A plurality of sheets of the same width are then assembled end to end and face to face, using an overlapping arrangement and a suitable adhesive, to make a multiple thickness corrugated web. This multiple layer web can then be cut by using suitable cutting techniques to make the components of corrugated cardboard shipping pallets. These components, or beams can be wrapped with a layer or layers of corrugated or other suitable material to add strength, moisture resistance or other desired qualities.

  • Patent number: 5407518
Abstract: The present invention is a device for separating a toner cartridge hopper from its mounting member so that the cartridge can be reliably resealed and refilled with toner for repeated use. A container holds the cartridge while leaving the outer edge of the gasket exposed. In one embodiment, the container is provided with wheels that travel in a track. The container moves linearly along the track past a blade that cuts away the outer edge of the gasket. In a second embodiment, the container is positioned on a rail aligned to pass between two spaced-apart blades. The rail is mounted on a linear bearing so that the rail moves linearly past the blades to remove both gasket outer edges in a single pass. By removing the outer edges of the gasket, the welds that join the hopper and mounting member to the gasket are broken and the hopper can be separated from the mounting member.

Abstract: A substantially rigid thermoplastic pipe for repairing a pipeline by installing the thermoplastic pipe in an existing underground pipeline, such as a service lateral, having access from only one end and a bend along its length is provided. The thermoplastic pipe may be manufactured in reduced form so as to have a memory for the reduced form, is heated to make it pliable for installation, and is pulled into the lateral from the access opening using a cable-and-pulley arrangement anchored temporarily at the intersection of lateral and main pipelines. When installed in a lateral, it is rounded and cooled in its rounded shape by passing steam under pressure through passages along the folds of the pipe while its leading end is restricted.

Abstract: This invention includes an apparatus and method for molding and curing a curable composite patch used for repairing damaged contoured surface structures. The molding apparatus has a fluid impermeable outer container having a flexible outer wall. A flexible, fluid impermeable inner container containing a moldable granular material is positioned within the outer container and has a flexible molding wall on which the composite patch can be placed. Inner and outer ports are located on the inner and outer containers for evacuating the inner and outer containers. A model of an undamaged surface is formed by positioning the molding wall of the inner container against an unaffected surface and evacuating the inner container so that the granular material is rigidly held in a molded form. The patch is placed on the molding wall and the outer container is sealed with the outer wall positioned over the patch and molding of the inner container.
