Publication number: 20100132875Abstract: A method for reworking an electrically conductive layer of a composite skin is disclosed in which a patch replaces the altered section of the electrically conductive layer. The method is performed by removing a portion of the electrically conductive layer to reveal the underlying composite skin. A patch is formed, having an electrically conductive section coupled to an adhesive having a low dielectric breakdown strength, and is then introduced over the underlying composite skin such that the adhesive layer covers the underlying composite skin and overlaps an unremoved portion of the electrically conductive layer. The patch is applied such that the electrically conductive section within the patch covers the adhesive layer and overlaps the unremoved section of the electrically conductive layer. The adhesive layer preferably has a low dielectric breakdown strength, so that electricity from lightning which strikes the composite skin may be conducted through the adhesive.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 29, 2010Publication date: June 3, 2010Applicant: THE BOEING COMPANYInventors: Patrice K. Patent number: 7279056Abstract: When two structural components are to be joined, for example, when an aircraft skin section is to be secured to a stringer by an adhesive bonding, it is important that the joining surface areas are well-fitted to each other to avoid the formation of air inclusions in the joint because air inclusions weaken the mechanical strength of the joint. Thus, a surface topography that is not smooth or well-fitted must be smoothed out prior to the joining. For this purpose the surface areas to be joined are optically scanned to provide topographical information for each surface area that needs to be smoothed out. The topographical information is processed to ascertain the configuration and volume of the surface topography that needs to be filled with a filler material to produce a smooth surface without hills and dales. A respective control signal is produced and fed to a dosing equipment which supplies the exact volume of filler material required for smoothing the surface topography.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2006Date of Patent: October 9, 2007Assignee: Airbus Deutschland GmbHInventor: Tilmann Weisser

Patent number: 6716297Abstract: The invention relates to methods and apparatuses for separating components adhesively bonded to one another wherein transmitters for mechanical vibrations, in particular for ultrasound, and/or for electromagnetic radiation, in particular laser light, are placed in the region of an adhesive join between the components. An adhesive bond in the adhesive join is acted upon by the vibrations or radiation, and the adhesive and optionally one of the components joined therewith are excited, as a result of which the adhesive effect of the adhesive bond is at least reduced. Alternatively or in addition thereto, transmitters can also be permanently placed in the region of the adhesive join at the time the components are adhesively bonded.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2000Date of Patent: April 6, 2004Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventors: Oliver Essig, Martin Hartweg, Anja Keller, Silvia Tomaschko

Patent number: 6692599Abstract: A method of repairing or refurbishing a filter screen is described. The type of screen is defined in the specification. The repair or refurbishment is effected by stripping worn or damaged wirecloth from the surface of the frame and placing fresh cloth over the frame and tensioning it as appropriate. Heat is then applied so as to soften surfaces of the frame over which wirecloth is stretched, so that the latter can penetrate softened plastics material in the surfaces and become embedded therein. The frame and its associated fresh cloth is allowed to cool, after which the applied tensioning is removed. Exposed edges of the wirecloth can be trimmed back to the surrounding flange. Plastics material may be applied to the surface of the frame which is to receive the new wirecloth, before the latter is fitted, to provide additional plastics material for bonding the wirecloth to the frame.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2002Date of Patent: February 17, 2004Assignee: United Wire LimitedInventors: Gordon James Cook, Andrew Hughes, Arthur Robert Bailey, George Charles Hartnup, Dugald Stewart

Patent number: 6656299Abstract: A method for repairing a composite structure is herein disclosed, as well as a corresponding structure repaired using such methods. The structural repair method is a new fill-and-patch-type system that generally includes forming a recess in the structure and placing both a threaded insert and a potting material in the recess. Generally after the potting material has hardened, a patch is adhered to the potting material-filled recess, and a fixture is disposed over the recess. By directing a threaded fastener through the fixture and into the threaded insert, the fixture is drawn toward the structure and compresses the patch against the filled recess via the threaded fastener being tightened to supply sufficient compressional force to assist in bonding the patch to the repaired structure.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2001Date of Patent: December 2, 2003Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventors: Duane D. Publication number: 20030205311Abstract: A method for preparing a toner cartridge for reconditioning and resealing with a replacement seal includes providing a used toner cartridge whose seal has been removed and the toner essentially consumed with the cartridge substantially otherwise intact. The interior of the cartridge is partially separated or penetrated so as to remove, modify or by-pass any impediments present which would or could interfere with the resealing of the cartridge. A new seal is secured to the toner cartridge.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2003Publication date: November 6, 2003Inventor: Costa G. Chitouras

Publication number: 20030201057Abstract: The invention is a method of joining two belt ends together, either laterally or longitudinally, and the resulting belt. The two ends can be of two different belts being joined, a short section added to replace a damaged section of a belt, or two ends of the same belt. Moreover, the belt or belts can be damaged or intentionally cut in preparation of their joining. The belt ends are stripped of their rubber or elastomeric coating that covers the cord core, and the ends can be fashioned in any shape such that one belt end complements the other end when abutted. The ends are joined and a new rubber layer is then bonded to the belt above and below the cord core.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2003Publication date: October 30, 2003Inventors: Troy D.
