    Abstract: A method for applying a foam to a paper web is provided. Specifically, a foam is first formed from a liquid-based composition and a gas, such as air. Once formed, the foam is applied by a foam applicator to the web. In one embodiment, for example, the foam applicator applies the foam without substantially contacting the web. When applied with the foam, the web typically has a solids consistency less than about 95% by weight of the web. In some embodiments, one or more vacuum slots can be utilized in conjunction with the foam applicator to facilitate uniform application of the foam to the paper web.

    Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to paper products having great softness and strength. The paper products are formed from a paper web that can be made according to various methods. In one embodiment, the paper web is an uncreped through-air dried web. The web can contain softwood fibers in combination with high-yield fibers. For example, the high-yield fibers can be contained in the middle layer of a stratified fiber furnish. In accordance with the present invention, a first bonding material is applied to a first side of the web and a second bonding material is applied to a second side of the paper web. The bonding materials are applied according to preselected patterns. At least one side of the paper web is creped after one of the bonding materials is applied. The bonding material applied to the creped side of the web can be an adhesive selected that allows the web to be creped at relatively low temperatures.

    Abstract: The specification discloses papers suitable for liquid electrophotographic printing (“LEP”) and a method for making such papers. According to the method, a papermaking furnish containing cellulosic fibers is formed into a fibrous web on a papermaking machine and at least partially dried. The web is then treated with a sizing composition comprising starch, an acrylic acid polymer, an organic material having an HLB value of from about 2 to about 14 such as a polyglycerol ester, and water. The treated web is dried and calendered to a final desired caliper. Since the sizing composition is an aqueous mixture, it may be applied to the web on-line during production of the paper on the papermaking machine, thereby avoiding the expense and inconvenience of conventional off-line methods used to make existing LEP papers. The resulting paper exhibits at least 80% and preferably above 90% toner adhesion as measured by the tape pull tests used for the assessment of papers printed by LEP.

    Abstract: The present invention discloses a paper web with a highly textured surface and a method of forming the highly textured web. The process includes printing a viscous material onto the surface of a paper web in a pattern with a low pressure printing process.
