Publication number: 20040099388Abstract: The present invention discloses a process and a method which may ‘lock in’ three dimensional texturing added to a paper web by virtue of an adhesive material which is printed onto the surface of the web. Specifically, it has been discovered that certain low pressure printing technologies may be used to deliver an adhesive material to the surface of a paper web such as a tissue, an air laid web, or a fibrous nonwoven web. The adhesive may be applied to the web either before, during or after the web is molded to increase the surface texture. The web may be molded under relatively low pressure so as to increase surface texture without significant deformation of the papermaking fibers. The cured adhesive material prevents the added texture from relaxing back in to a two dimensional state or may contribute additional texture by rising above the surface of the web.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 27, 2002Publication date: May 27, 2004Applicant: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Fung-Jou Chen, Jeffrey D. Publication number: 20040099389Abstract: The present invention discloses a process and a method providing a high bulk tissue which is both strong and soft. Specifically, it has been discovered that certain low pressure printing technologies may be used to deliver a bonding material to the surface of a high bulk paper web such as an uncreped, through-dried web. The bonding material may be applied to the web either before, during or after the web is softened with a mechanical straining process which will decrease the web bulk by no more than 20% of the initial bulk in order to increase the web softness. The web may be softened by any of a variety of mechanical straining processes such as, for instance, microcreping, microstraining, rush transfer, or other low-compressive softening methods. The cured bonding material on the web may not only increase the bulk of the web when dry and wet, but also increase the wet resiliency and the wet strength of the web.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 27, 2002Publication date: May 27, 2004Inventors: Fung-Jou Chen, Jeffrey D. Patent number: 6630055Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a coated paper having at least one mark resembling a watermark, the method being characterized in that said mark is made after the drying step which follows the last coating operation, by performing steps in which: a) a re-wetting solution is applied to at least one face of the coated paper, in one or more determined zones; and b) pressure and heat are applied in said re-wetted zone(s) of the coated paper so as to evaporate said solution and densify the coated paper in said zone(s) relative to the remainder of the paper. The present invention also provides a coated paper including at least one mark resembling a watermark, characterized in that one or more determined zones of the coated paper present a reduction in thickness relative to the remainder of the coated paper, the density per unit area in said zone(s) of the coated paper being identical to that in the remainder of the paper.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2000Date of Patent: October 7, 2003Assignee: Arjo Wiggins Papiers CouchesInventors: Michel Goguelin, Nicolas Fourmy

Patent number: 6630229Abstract: A recording medium particularly suitable for electrophotographic copying is characterized by coated paper that for a given basis weight has proportionally less coating and proportionally more fiber than conventional coated paper made for electrophotographic processes. The base sheet of the coated paper is preferably formed square on a paper machine wet end and has on the order of 40-50% less filler than conventional sheet paper made for electrophotographic processes. After being formed and dried, the base sheet is provided with a top coat weight that is approximately 60% less than the typical coat weight used for conventional paper. The coating is formulated to have sufficient viscosity to stay more on the surface of the base sheet. The coated sheet is calendered to a medium gloss on the order of a 75° TAPPI gloss of about 45, both to preserve a degree of surface roughness to enhance runnability of the paper through an electrophotographic copier and to provide a pleasant and easily readable surface.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2000Date of Patent: October 7, 2003Assignee: Stora Enso North America Corp.Inventors: Charles A. Publication number: 20030178165Abstract: A paper having an improved print quality comprises a paper substrate having a surface with a surface roughness of less than 6 microns and a surface gloss of 5-80% which surface has been coated with a light-weight, low solids content, top coat. The top coat may comprise (i) a rheology modifier/binder component and at least one pigment or (ii) at least one binder coated pigment. The top coat provides a significant improvement to the delta gloss of the so-treated paper.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 6, 2003Publication date: September 25, 2003Inventors: Barrett Richard Bobsein, James Tinney Brown, Zhenwen Fu, Janet Drobits Windisch

Publication number: 20030173045Abstract: The present invention relates to a liquid starch dispersion for paper coating where the dispersion has 5 to 50 percent by weight of starch, and the starch contains from 20 to 100 percent by weight of at least one cationic starch. The liquid starch composition is characterized in that a 25 percent by weight starch solids dispersion has a 25° C. viscosity of from 500 to 2500 cps both initially, and also upon storage at room temperature for 90 days. The dispersion preferably contains a blend of cationic starch and ASA starch. The liquid starch dispersion is useful in paper and paperboard coating processes, as a rheology modifier, a structurant, and/or a binder, all at the same time. The liquid starch dispersion provides good coating holdout, gloss, and stiffness properties. The cationic nature of the starch coating improves printability with anionic inks, and makes the coatings useful for ink-jet and photographic papers.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2002Publication date: September 18, 2003Inventors: Philip Confalone, Daniel B. Publication number: 20030145964Abstract: A paper product is provided that contains at least one paper web that is applied with a reactive composition. The reactive composition, for example, can contain one or more softening moieties that are capable of debonding hydrogen bonds within a paper web, thereby softening the web. In addition, the reactive composition contains a moiety that can form both a covalent bond and ionic bond with certain groups present on cellulosic fibers. For example, in one embodiment, the moiety contains a positively charged atom that can form an ionic bond with a carboxyl group present on a first cellulosic fiber. In addition, the moiety can contain a pendant hydroxyl group that can form a covalent bond with a carboxyl group present on a second cellulosic fiber.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2001Publication date: August 7, 2003Applicant: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventor: Thomas G.
