  • Patent number: 6304794
Abstract: When a molten plastic is molded using a metal mold, sufficient cooling time has to elapse before the metal mold is opened, but this cooling time restricts the production per unit time. If a metal mold is opened without sufficient cooling, the plastic undergoes significant deformation by thermal shrink. If this deformation can be estimated and the metal mold designed so as to make allowance for the anticipated deformation, it will be possible to produce a molding with a shape that is equal to the design dimensions, despite shortening the cooling time. The finite element method is used to obtain the deformation. Mold design can also be performed taking account of the deformation due to the hydrostatic pressure that is produced when the molding is filled with its liquid contents. In addition, as for a portion of an in-mold labelled container which include lamination construction, the deformation due to thermal shrink is not estimated as a container which an in-mold label is not being applied.

  • Patent number: 5170834
Abstract: A cope flask is precisely centered relative to a cope pattern by a flask displacement mechanism affixed to a cope stool which lineraly shifts the flask relative to the pattern while taking up clearance between the locator pins of the cope flask and the locator bushing in the stool. This precision centering is maintained while mold sand is poured into the flask and compacted. The cope mold comprising the flask and the hardened sand is stripped from the stool for subsequent mating with a drag mold made in a similar manner but with the drag stool having locator pins secured in its top surface and the locator bushings provided in the drag flask. As with the cope mold making procedure, the drag flask is precisely centered relative to the drag pattern by linearly moving the drag flask to take up clearance between the centering pins and the centering bushings in the drag with the displacement mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5020582
Abstract: To improve the accuracy of making a casting pattern from a casting model or mold (2, 2') in a molding material (M) retained in a foundry form, a single pressure pulse (P) is applied to the molding material which, however, has two phases of pressure gradient, namely a first or initial phase (1) of low pressure gradient extending up to about 1 to 3 bar during between about 10-100 m/sec, for example about 50 m/sec, to initiate fluidization of the molding material. The then fluidized and still fluidized molding material is compacted by raising the pressure from the initial low pressure pulse abruptly at a second and much higher pressure gradient to the customary compaction pressure of between 3 to 6 bar. The two-phase pressure pulse can be applied, selectively, only in a region above the model or throughout the entire mold.
