  • Patent number: 5261484
Abstract: A cylindrical drum exchanges heat between a process fluid sprayed against its inner surface, and a raw product applied to its outer surface. The drum is formed by a thin cylindrical strip which is mounted on two disks. The strip is stiff enough to resist sagging under its own weight. The disks are of smaller diameter than an inner surface of the drum, and a hollow inflatable ring is interposed between each disk and the drum to frictionally connect the drum to the disks for common rotation and form a fluid seal for the ends of the drum. The drum can be removed longitudinally from the disks.

  • Patent number: 5223099
Abstract: The surface properties of a roll and/or rolls in a paper machine are affected by regulating the temperature of the roll face by means of an external heating device. In the arrangement, a combination of a heating device and a roll coating is used in such manner that the heating radiation penetrates through the paper or only directly to the roll face, but does not heat the roll itself at a depth greater than the roll face. The roll coating is preferably made of a dark, readily heatable and insulating material. The arrangement of the invention is utilized for example in a calendar and for detaching the paper from a roll.

  • Patent number: 5215765
Abstract: The invention relates to an iron sponge briquetting press having two opposite rollers. The rollers consist of a roller base body and a coating affixed thereto, in which the moulding recesses for shaping the briquettes are formed. In order to provide less expensive roller coatings as compared with the segments used formerly as coating, which have moreover longer service lives, the invention provides that the coating is produced as a closed ring from a chromium nickel molybdenum steel and is held in press fit on the roller base body. Open grooves are produced in the sleeve surface of the roller base body or on the inner side of the ring as cooling ducts, their open sides being covered by the inner side of the ring or the sleeve surface of the base body in the assembled condition of the rollers.

  • Patent number: 5177554
Abstract: In an image forming apparatus according to the present invention, a plurality of image forming process units are aligned to face a horizontal transportation section of a paper transportation path. A transfer belt unit is provided to successfully transfer images formed on photoreceptor drums of the process units to a transfer medium. A flashlight device is interposed between each two adjacent process units. Developing agent images formed by means of the process units and transferred to the transfer medium are fixed to the medium by means of the flashlight devices. By doing this, a developing agent transferred to the transfer medium by means of a preceding process unit is fixed to the medium by means of its corresponding flashlight device. The space between the roll shell and the core is divided by means of several peripheral seals into numerous annular chambers. A flow of fluid is guided through each of the annular chambers. The fluid temperature in each annular chamber is independently controllable. Consequently the temperature-controlled roll shell can be heated by the fluid to different degrees along the axis thereof to control its external diameter along each zone. The peripheral seals are sized to have free play in a direction transverse to the roll axis and are constructed as endless, metallic rings.

  • Patent number: 4781795
Abstract: The invention is a fluid heated drum especially well adapted for use with a drum press in which high press roll nip loading and high heat flux to a pressed web are both encountered. A press of this type is disclosed in detail. However, the drum is more broadly useful in any application combining heavy mechanical drum loading and high heat flux through the drum surface. The drum is constructed with a thin outer shell spaced radially apart from an inner cylindrical body. Radial supports provide load bearing connections between the two. The annulus between the shell and inner body may be arranged in various patterns as a conduit for the flow of heating fluid. By using a thin outer shell which does not have to sustain high bending stresses a high rate of heat transfer is permitted. The outer shell may be made of copper or other high thermal flux but lower strength metal to obtain additional heat transfer advantages.

  • Patent number: 4773468
Abstract: Rods are placed into axially arranged grooves of the roll core. These rods protrude radially from the roll surface and the roll shell is shrink-fitted onto the rods. Due to the creeping movement of the roll shell which is a result of periodical heating and cooling thereof, the inside surface of the shell and the interfacing outside surface of each rod are subject to wear. Whenever this wear has proceeded beyond a tolerable limit the rods are replaced, whereafter a new shell with a normal inside diameter is again shrink-fitted onto the rods. Thereby the rod's and the shell's dimensions must never be changed. The roll core is not subject to wear. Stock-keeping and fabrication are particularly simplified due to the fact that the dimensions of the replacement parts never change.

  • Patent number: 4733721
Abstract: A method and apparatus for supplying a heated fluid to a heat consumption circuit, such as an injection mold. The apparatus comprises a heat exchanger, for heating the fluid, a pump for pumping the heated fluid to the heat consumption circuit, a reservoir for storing the fluid, and a degasifier for degasifying the fluid that returns from the heat consumption circuit to the apparatus. The heat exchanger, and the pump comprise one compact integral assembly. In addition, the connection between the degasifier and the reservoir is in the form of a siphon which acts as a thermal barrier to prevent the heat from the heated fluid from heating the fluid in the reservoir. As a result of this arrangement, the total volume of fluid used is much smaller than in prior art devices, thereby substantially decreasing the heat losses from the fluid to the environment.

  • Patent number: 4734229
Abstract: The calender rolls of the present invention are comprised of relatively thin-walled hollow shells which are supported at each end by shafts having bores which extend into the cavities formed in the rolls. Fittings located at the ends of the shafts are rotatable relative to them so that by tying the fittings together they do not rotate along with the rolls. The fittings at one of the ends of the rolls are connected to a source of wet steam through a pressure regulator and the fittings at the other ends carry probes which extend through the shafts and curve downwardly towards the bottoms of the rolls. A valve regulates the amount of material which flows out of the cavities through the probes. The method by which the rolls are used comprises introducing wet steam into the cavities, maintaining its pressure at a constant level.

In order to avoid sealing problems in the region of the cylinder wall and to achieve a high heating or cooling performance, the cylinder wall is formed from a cast metal tube and the helical medium passage is formed from a spiral tube of a metal having a distinctly higher melting temperature in comparison with that of the cylinder wall, the spiral tube being rigidly embedded in the cylinder wall during casting thereof.
