Abstract: A system and method for tracking the growth of large-area wildland fires. The technique includes monitoring wind conditions in and around a wildfire using near-surface-sited sensors deployed by a high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), such as the Global Hawk. The deployed sensors measure a localized wind vector at multiple locations within and surrounding the wildfire, and transmit the wind data back to the UAV for relaying to a command center operated by fire management authorities, where the wind data are used to assist decision-making, including as input into wildfire growth prediction models. The sensors may provide additional data such as local altitude/elevation, pressure, temperature and relative humidity. The UAV may also carry sensors that provide additional data to be used by the fire management authorities or the wildfire growth prediction models—such as infrared images defining actively flaming areas, and visual images which indicate vegetation type and density.

A delivery opening (7) puts the chamber (4) into communication with the exterior. An explosive cartridge primer (10), associated with a striker mechanism (13), is provided for triggering the reaction of the extinguishing charge (5). The primer (10) and the striker mechanism (13) are located near a distal end (5a) of the charge (5) so as to trigger the chemical reaction of the charge (5) from that end.

Abstract: Improvements to a portable fire extinguisher are disclosed. The improvements allow for frequent and simpler untrained and automatic self-servicing of a fire extinguisher. The improvements include an anti-bridging mechanism that fluffs, mixes or stirs the powder within the chamber to keep it in a liquefied state. Additional improvements include a larger opening to more quickly fill and inspect the powder within the chamber. Another improvement includes the use of a CO2 canister located external to the chamber to allow easier servicing or replacement of just the CO2 canister as well as the ability to maintain the chamber in an un-pressurized condition, allows for non-HASMAT shipping. These features will extend the service intervals while maintaining the fire extinguisher in a ready condition.

Abstract: This invention relates to a fire extinguisher structure in which a bottle mouth is extended upward on the top end of the bottle body, a socket being provided on the bottom of a nozzle, an inner and an outer thread segments engaging with each other being respectively formed on the socket of the nozzle and the bottle mouth of the bottle body, a plug being extended from the center of the socket of the nozzle for blocking the aperture of the bottle mouth and being in transitional fitting therewith, a leak-proof ring being put over the plug of the nozzle for abutting against the end face of the bottle mouth. In this manner, leakage of high pressure gas contained within the fire extinguisher can be effectively avoided by the plug blocking the bottle mouth, the leak-proof ring and the socket.

Abstract: A portable compressed gas foam system having a rocket engine, fueled with hydrogen peroxide and a suitable propellant, which produces exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are injected into a water tank, aerating the water and pressurizing the water tank. Foam concentrate may be added to the tank or separately in a mixing stage and is aerated by the aerated and pressurized water. The aeration produces bubbles in the foam and entrains exhaust gas within the bubbles. The aerated foam can then be sprayed onto a fire through a foam injection nozzle, extinguishing the fire both by wetting the burning materials and by smothering it by reducing the amount of oxygen available to burn. The invention may also be adapted for use in a firehose or in an underslung bucket.
