  • Patent number: 5079710
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for limiting road speed in electrically controlled diesel engines. The output signal of the road-speed transducer or, if the road-speed transducer is defective, the output signal of the engine speed transducer is evaluated by means of pregiven thresholds. In the presence of a simultaneous clutch signal and a quantity signal which is less than a pregiven injection quantity a waiting time is made available in advance of the quantity reduction so that when the clutch is actuated, fuel can be metered when the clutch pedal is depressed or the vehicle can be started on a hill. No transmission signal is necessary for limiting road speed whereby manipulations on the road-speed limitation are prevented.

  • Patent number: 5056639
Abstract: A device for the control of an automatic motor vehicle clutch is arrayed between an engine and a geaar box and acts primarily as a start-up clutch. A control device receives an electric signal coming from an electronic control device and transforms it into a control quantity for an actuator which engages and disengages the clutch. The engagement of the clutch at start-up occurs with a basic clutch-in speed dependent upon the positioning of the gas pedal and initiated by this positioning and is determined as an electric signal by an electronic control device. For this purpose, a characteristic curve which was determined specifically for the engine is stored in the memory of the electronic control device so that in dependence on the displacement angle of the gas pedal the basic clutch-in speed can be determined very quickly and in a simple manner. It is possible to further improve the quality of the clutch-in process by means of correction factors which are multipliers for the basic clutch-in speed.

  • Patent number: 5050714
Abstract: In a control system for controlling a clutch coupled with an internal combustion engine for driving a vehicle off, the control operation for clutch engagement is carried out based on the level of power insufficiency of the engine. When the level of engine insufficiency is within a predetermined range, the operation for clutch engagement is controlled in accordance with the change in the amount of operation of an accelerating member without stopping the engaging operation of the clutch. In order to improve the performance experienced by the operator at drive-off, just after recovery from power insufficiency, the target clutch stroke to be followed is corrected by correction data determined on the basis of the difference between the target and actual clutch stroke at the time the engine has just recovered from its power insufficiency.

  • Patent number: 5046923
Abstract: The existence of autorotation of a load (e.g., a helicopter rotor system) coupled to the free turbine of a gas turbine engine is determined and a signal indicative thereof enables an integrator which, upon autorotation, integrates rate-based recovery anticipation provided thereto, the integrator output providing a time-composite bias signal to the main control portion of the engine fuel control to increase the speed of the gas generator of the engine in anticipation of rotor reengagement with the free turbine. The amount of recovery error is determined from the rotor speed error and is multiplied with the integrator output, the product being fed, upon completion of autorotation recovery, to the integrator input whose output now provides a controlled removal of the bias signal from the main control portion so as to minimize transients induced therein.

  • Patent number: 4989471
Abstract: A microprocessor controlling a shuttle shift transmission may be programmed to effect a calibration of the final drive clutches in the transmission so that the microprocessor can efficiently effect engagement of each respective said clutch by applying the proper hydraulic pressure to cause proper engagement thereof. This method of calibrating the final drive clutches in the transmission includes braking the output shaft of the transmission so that any engagement of the selected final drive clutch being calibrated will cause a load to be applied to the engine. The hydraulic pressure is then incrementally increased until the engine RPM's decrease because of the load being placed on the engine. The value of this engagement hydraulic pressure is stored in the microprocessor for use when effecting engagement of the selected clutch during operation of the transmission. Service indicators are programmed into the microprocessor should the selected clutch not be capable of being calibrated.

Abstract: In an actuation system having a pair of motors simultaneously operable for driving a movable member through a torque-summing gear box, there is a need to have a simply constructed, minimal cost, light weight quick disconnect mechanism operable to disconnect a motor which has failed fixed so that the other motor can continue to operate. The quick disconnect mechanism utilizes a tapered jaw clutch connecting driving and driven elements in the drive train between the motor and the torque-summing gear box, a ball detent mechanism for holding the clutch either engaged or disengaged and a short duty cycle solenoid. The solenoid can be momentarily energized to release the ball detent mechanism to permit an axial force derived from the driven member being back driven to separate the clutch and thereafter, the solenoid is de-energized to enable the ball detent mechanism to maintain the clutch disengaged.

  • Patent number: RE33713
Abstract: A method and an apparatus of controlling an electromagnetic clutch incorporated in a power transmission system of a vehicle to transmit an output of an engine to the drive wheels of the vehicle is disclosed. An amount of electric current applied to the clutch is regulated to control an engaging action of said electromagnetic clutch, based on either a variation in rotating speed or torque of an output shaft of the electromagnetic clutch, or based on the frequency or number of variations per unit time in rotating speed or torque of the output shaft, as compared with the frequency or number of ignitions or combustions per unit time of the engine. In this way a variation in output torque of the engine is absorbed by the electromagnetic clutch for improved drivability, while a transmission power loss in the clutch is kept to a minimum for maximum fuel economy.
