    Abstract: The self-disinfecting drain trap is an arrangement for the automatic cleaning and disinfecting of drain traps in drain channels. The cleaning and disinfection take place automatically during normal usage and without interruption of the operation of the drain trap. They take place by means of a novel combination for drain traps of electromechanical oscillation, preferably ultrasound, heating the interior space of the drain trap and heating the confining liquid and preventing growth on the inner wall by means of a growth-inhibiting and antimicrobially effective coating. The danger of recontamination of sanitary apparatuses and devices and therewith also of the ambient air by microorganisms from wastewater pipelines is effectively countered therewith.

The system has no storage tanks where stagnant water will be fouled by biofilm colonizing the tank surface. Water is circulated throughout the purification system and drawn as required, on demand. The water is purified and used immediately or recycled and repurified to ensure quality. Sanitation of the purification system, maintaining microbiological purity and cleaning is done by controlling the pH so that it is normally acidic by maintaining a high carbon dioxide concentration in solution, the carbon dioxide being allowed to pass into the permeate from a reverse osmosis membrane assembly used to purify the water.

The treatment compartment contains a hydrocarbon absorption media which absorbs any hydrocarbons present in the water rendering such water substantially hydrocarbon-free for discharge directly into a stream or groundwater.

The method may also involve increasing the disinfecting power of the fluid by adjusting the pH of the fluid. A manually rotatable valve 154 is provided at one end of the filtration apparatus for controlling the flow of oil through the manifold. In a first position, the valve allows oil to flow through the outer flow passages through the end cap 152 and into an inner flow passage 142 where it is filtered before flowing through a central passage 134 and out the flow manifold. In a second position, the outer flow passages are blocked so that oil flows directly into the inner flow passage. A pressure sensitive valve 164 is provided in the end cap so that when the filter becomes clogged, oil is diverted directly to the central flow passage bypassing the filter.

The full flow filter extracts solid contaminants having a particle size of 15 microns or greater. The partial flow filter extracts solid contaminants of 1 micron or greater. The filter element of the partial flow filter is composed of compressed cotton fibers and preferably has a higher density in an upper end adjacent the vaporization chamber. In the vaporization chamber, liquid contaminants are removed from the minor portion by a heating element (72).
