  • Patent number: 5752539
Abstract: Filtering apparatus includes two or more passages (2) acting in parallel, each having an extended filter (12) which passes through inlet and outlet ports (48, 49), flowable preferably sealed by solidified plugs of the flowable substance such as a polymer being filtered. The flow of such substance to one passage can be terminated so as to permit filter advance under conditions of zero pressure drop, whilst flow through the other passage continues. Filter advance can be assisted by extrusion of a sealing plug in the outlet port under the pressure of such substance from the other passage which is still filtering. In additional or alternative mode, flow into a passage is terminated and a secondary outlet (20, 21) in that passage is opened. This creates a counterflow under the pressure of substance from the other passage, which cleans the filter. The secondary outlet can be sealed by a plug which is extruded during counterflow.

  • Patent number: 5336398
Abstract: A simple, rapid, efficient and inexpensive process for on-site recycling of wastewater with minimal odor wherein the solid wastes generated by the water treatment process are dewatering on-site by solar energy to water content levels below those required for disposal. All operations, including solar dewatering, are accomplished in a compact unit which may be mobile. The solar dewatering unit includes a drying pan over which a solar collector window arrangement is disposed. In the process, wastewater, a water purifying composition and an oxidizing agent are additively mixed together in a first reactor settling tank and the resulting composition is neutralized to a pH of between 7.5-9.4. The added water purifying composition is then allowed to precipitate wherein it binds to and precipitates heavy metals as well as other impurities. The precipitated purifying composition forms a non-hazardous sludge at the bottom of the tank.

  • Patent number: 5290438
Abstract: The invention is a sewage treatment system with a filter apparatus enclosed within a housing. The filter operates to separate a liquid component from a solid component of the sewage. It does so by having the sewage drop onto a diffuser. The diffuser has a conical shape with its apex facing upward. The diffuser breaks up the sewage and forces the sewage to flow against the filter walls. The filter walls are liquid permeable which separates liquid from solid. The solid component then falls to the bottom of the filter walls which has as its base an incinerator plate. Hot air is then used to dry the sewage. The incinerator plate heats to a combustion temperature and burns the sewage. The ash resultant and the liquid component of the sewage is then removed from the chamber.

Abstract: A portable cooking oil filtering unit has an outer housing completely enclosing all the filter stages and providing access to the stages for maintenance purposes via doors and removable closures. The housing has an inlet conduit for connection to a cooking vat drain outlet, and an outlet conduit for returning filtered oil to the cooking vat. A first stage filter in the housing is connected to the inlet conduit for filtering relatively large size particles from the oil, and the filtered oil is connected to at least one additional filter stage for filtering smaller particles from the oil. A pump is connected downstream of the final filter stage, between that filter stage and the outlet conduit, for drawing oil through the filter stages under vacuum rather than pumping it through the filters under positive pressure. One of the filter stages is accessible to allow oil-life enhancing chemicals to be added to the oil.

Abstract: An apparatus for dewatering aqueous sludge is disclosed. A porous drum is partially immersed in a sludge pond. A porous belt is connected between the drum and a roller which moves the belt. As the belt moves, the sludge adheres to the belt. A vacuum is drawn on the interior of the drum, removing some of the water. Sludge which is conveyed on the belt is frozen as it approaches the roller. The frozen sludge is broken into smaller cakes as it leaves the roller. The frozen cakes are subsequently dethawed providing a solid residue which is disposed.

  • Patent number: 5073625
Abstract: A self-regulating porous heater regulates the temperature of fluid passing through it. This device includes at least one layer of a porous material which has a magnetic permeability inversely related to temperature over a given range. Due to conductor skin effects, changes in permeability cause changes in the depth of penetration of alternating current passing through the magnetic layer. Changes in the depth of penetration, in turn, result in changes in resistance--the less the depth the greater the resistance--and in I.sup.2 R Joule heat. The combined result of these effects is to provide more heat where the temperature of the fluid and the layer through which the fluid flows is below a specified temperature which is related to the Curie temperature of the layer. Significantly, by properly defining pore dimensions, the heater device can filter contaminants from a fluid as it flows therethrough. In a preferred mode, a porous heater device is included in a chemical reaction chamber.
