  • Patent number: 6802961
Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus and process for cleaning substrates using dense fluids under the influence of centrifugal force and dense fluid phase changes. A perforated centrifuge drum operates within a pressure vessel having drains and fill ports. System controls include a high optical sensor, a low optical sensor, a pressure transducer, and a thermocouple. An external dense fluid cleaning and management system exchanges dense fluid and gas with the pressure vessel via the drain and fill ports. Dense fluid centrifugal separations prevent pooling and supercooling of liquid carbon dioxide avoiding recontamination of the substrate. The present invention can perform solvent-aided separation processes including liquid-liquid, liquid-supercritical-fluid, froth flotation and centrifugal phase-shift separations.

  • Patent number: 6655531
Abstract: An assembly for separating solid phase material from a slurry that comprises a pressurized filtration unit including a vessel and filter media. A slurry is fed to the filtration unit where it is separated into a solid phase material and a liquid phase material. The filtration unit has a solid outlet for discharging the solid phase material to a material transport. The material transport moves the solid phase material to a depressurizing chamber that has a lower pressure than the filtration unit. As the solid phase material enters the depressurizing chamber it is exposed to the lower pressure of that chamber. The material transport maintains the pressure difference between the filtration unit and the chamber. Subsequently, the depressurized solid phase material can be conveyed to other equipment for drying or other processing.

  • Publication number: 20030205510
Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus and process for cleaning substrates using dense fluids under the influence of a continuous centrifugal force. Dense fluid centrifugal separations resolve many problems associated with conventional dense fluid cleaning technology. These include elimination of pooling and supercooling of liquid carbon dioxide trapped within pores and cavities of a substrate—leading to formation of dry ice and recontamination of substrate, ability to precision clean using one unit volume of dense fluid per cleaning operation and ability to remove small insoluble particles from deep voids or cavities. The present invention can perform solvent-aided separation processes heretofore not possible using conventional dense fluid technology. These include liquid-liquid, liquid-supercritical-fluid, froth flotation and centrifugal phase-shift separations.

The filter element consists of a support and a membrane mounted on the support. Fluid enters the chamber through an inlet port and concentrate leaves the chamber through an outlet port. Filtrate drains through the membrane and support to a channel in the centre of the filter element. Filtration relies upon cross-flow of the fluid across the surface of the rotating filter element. • Patent number: 6270684
Abstract: A screening device useful in water and waste water treatment plants separates fluid flow into two streams. The screening device is perforated so that solids having a predetermined cross-section will be maintained within a first fluid stream, and a portion of the fluid flow that has been screened of solids will flow into a second split-off fluid flow. The streams may go to different locations; only the first stream need be processed for the solids. The screening device is preferably cylindrical or another surface of rotation or a section of such a surface, and rotates. These features help maintain the screening device free of solids, and supplemental cleaning devices may also be used.

  • Patent number: 6258282
Abstract: A filter and a method for filtration is based upon moving a filter surface that is caused to move through a first filtration region (FF) for separation of a prefiltrate and through a second filtration region (KF) for separation of a clear filtrate. A vacuum is applied on the filtrate side of the filtration region (KF). The filtrate region (FF) has two filtration zones (FF1 and FF2) with mutually different pressure conditions. The filtration zone FF1 has atmospheric pressure and the filtration zone FF2 has a pressure that is lower than the pressure of FF1. The pressure change between the filtration zones (FF1 and FF2) occurs in the pre-filtrate region, i.e., before the filter surface has reached the filtrate region (KF).

  • Patent number: 6227379
Abstract: A method and apparatus for efficiently separating solids from liquid/solid slurries are disclosed. The slurry to be separated is retainably placed within a container having one or more lift paddles secured within its inner cavity. The container is supported for rotation about an axis and has drive means for slowly rotating the container. As the container rotates, the lift paddles lift a portion of the retained slurry, allowing the liquid portion to fall back into the primary slurry pool to be separated, and lifting coarse solids toward the top of the rotation path of the paddles. The separated solids slide by gravity from the lift paddles as they approach the top of their rotation paths and into a collection tray. A filter that rotates with the container filters fine solids from the liquid portion of the slurry and also deposits the fine solids on the collection tray. The filtered liquids can be readily pumped from or recirculated to the separator.

  • Patent number: 6177021
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for clearing product, e.g., sugar, from the inside of a centrifuge basket of a discontinues centrifuge. A scraper blade, which is attached to a clearing rod, is pivoted toward the spun-off layer of product. The scraper blade scrapes off the product with a cutting edge, which is directed in a direction that is opposite to the direction of rotation of the basket. To optimize the product removal, it is preferable if the scraper blade, after it has been pivoted inward, contacts the product over virtually the entire height of the basket and at the same time scrapes off the product from the layer of product which is rotating at the clearing rotational speed in layers over the entire height of the basket. Once the product has been substantially completely removed from the basket, the scraper blade is pivoted back away from the basket wall.
