Patent number: 4861483Abstract: An improved multilayer continuous biological membrane reactor and a process to eliminate diffusional limitations in membrane reactors in achieved by causing a convective flux of nutrient to move into and out of an immobilized biocatalyst cell layer. In a pressure cycled mode, by increasing and decreasing the pressure in the respective layers, the differential pressure between the gaseous layer and the nutrient layer is alternately changed from positive to negative. The intermittent change in pressure differential accelerates the transfer of nutrient from the nutrient layers to the biocatalyst cell layer, the transfer of product from the cell layer to the nutrient layer and the transfer of byproduct gas from the cell layer to the gaseous layer. Such intermittent cycling substantially eliminates mass transfer gradients in diffusion inhibited systems and greatly increases product yield and throughput in both inhibited and noninhibited systems.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1988Date of Patent: August 29, 1989Assignee: Cornell Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: George S. Patent number: 4834888Abstract: A hemodialysis apparatus includes a sterile filter whose outlet, which is usually closed, is connected to a line leading to a discharge outlet in wherein a bypass valve is employed which can be opened at predetermined intervals both during treatment and during flushing operations. The sterile filter has a primary chamber and a secondary chamber. When the bypass valve is opened during treatment, dialysis solution flows out of the primary chamber of the sterile filter and flushes the pyrogens and particles disposed on the membranes of the filter into the discharge. No sterilizating filtration of the dialysis solution takes place through the pores of the membrane because the flow resistance present in the adjoining dialyzer, in conjunction with a degree of clogging of the pores, prevents such a flow. A ventilation means may be provided whereby the bypass circuit of the sterile filter can be ventilated. The bypass circuit may also be employed for a pressure retaining test.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1987Date of Patent: May 30, 1989Assignee: Fresenius AGInventor: Hans-Dietrich Polaschegg

Patent number: 4440640Abstract: The present invention relates to a hoist to be used in combination with an apparatus for filtering molten metal. The hoist of the present invention is used both to position the filtering vessel, and to back-flushing metal through the filter element. The present invention also relates to the method of back-flushing. Back-flushing serves to dislodge particulate and thereby clean the filter element. When the filtering vessel is submerged in a molten metal bath back flushing serves to aid the exchange of the molten metal interior to the filtering vessel with the molten metal exterior to the filtering vessel, and in so doing aids in minimizing the temperature difference between molten metal interior and exterior to the molten metal filtering vessel. Periodic back-flushing significantly extends the life of the molten metal filtering apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1982Date of Patent: April 3, 1984Assignee: Daniel E.
