Patent number: 4990247Abstract: A liquid filter as disclosed which includes a housing in which a filtering media is disposed. A relief valve permits the liquid filtrate to bypass the media when the pressure differential across the media exceeds a predetermined level. The relief valve includes a valve member consisting of a valve disc from which four legs extend. The valve closure spring engages the legs to maintain the valve closed until the pressure differential attains a predetermined level. The legs are designed so that only two of the legs engage the spring during normal operation of the valve. Accordingly, the other two legs remain unstressed by the valve spring, but can engage the edge of the valve aperture in case of failure of one or both of the other legs to prevent the valve member from falling into the liquid filtrate, thus blocking the flow of liquid filtrate to the engine, causing catastrophic failure of the engine.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1989Date of Patent: February 5, 1991Assignee: Allied-Signal Inc.Inventor: Theodorus A. A tubular screen, having a filter disposed therein, is disposed axially between the cover and support member and defines an annular passage between it and the filter. In normal operation, fluid is communicated from an inlet, through the screen and filter and to an outlet. When the pressure of the fluid in the passages exceeds a predetermined level, the fluid is communicated from the inlet and through the screen and passage to open a bypass valve mounted in the cover to communicate the fluid directly to the outlet. A plurality of magnets are preferably secured on an underside of the support member and adjacent to the inlet to uniformly disperse the fluid thereby and to pick up metallic contaminants.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1976Date of Patent: October 11, 1977Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventor: Alvin L. Patent number: 4026806Abstract: A fluid filtering device comprises an inner member having an inner axial passageway for the fluid, and an outer housing radially spaced from the inner member to define therewith an outer axial passageway for the fluid, the inner member being formed with a radial passageway providing a communicating path between the two axial passageways for the fluid. A filter is disposed with the device upstream of the radial passageway in the path of the fluid flowing through the passageway, and a deflector is disposed within the axial passageway of the inner member on the upstream side of its radial passageway to deflect the fluid to flow through the radial passageway and through the filter. The deflector has a cylindrical wall disposed within the inner member and extending axially thereof, and a transverse wall extending transversely across the axial passageway of the inner member.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1976Date of Patent: May 31, 1977Inventor: Mordeki Drori
