Tear Strip Patents (Class 215/254)
  • Patent number: 4502608
Abstract: A disposable lid for a drinking cup is provided, where the lid has a generally circular cavity formed around the periphery thereof to accommodate the lip of the circular mouth of a cup, and so as to fit snugly thereover. The central portion of the lid is generally planar, and there is a skirt portion which depends downwardly and outwardly from the cavity, and has a pair of cuts formed therein at the rim and through the thickness thereof, the cuts being spaced apart from each other a distance less than 25% of the circumference of the rim--generally they are spaced about 30 to 60 degrees apart. The rim cuts may be either notches or slits. A second cut is made in the central portion of the lid through the thickness thereof, in a place radially inwardly from the cavity but at a distance less than the radius of the lid, and has a length so as to extend at least between imaginary diameters that are drawn through the rim cuts.

The container has a body portion and a neck portion defining an opening and having an annular bead spaced from the end of the neck. The closure has a top wall and a peripheral skirt and a retention and holding bead on the skirt adapted to engage the annular bead on the container. The closure includes spaced score lines on the skirt and a portion of the top wall defining a severable portion of the skirt between the score lines such that when the severable portion is pulled outwardly and upwardly, the closure is severed along the score lines. A foil sheet having a layer of thermoplastic material on each surface thereof and is thermally bonded to the upper end of the container. A liner ring overlies the foil sheet and is thermally bonded to the thermoplastic material on the foil.

  • Patent number: 4460100
Abstract: A container having a threaded neck is provided with a removal resistant cap which can be applied to the container neck by rotational thrust. The cap has a depending skirt having an internally threaded lower section with the threads terminating in a bead intermediate the ends of the skirt. The neck has an upper threaded section with the threads terminating in a bead spaced below the top of the neck. When the threads of the cap are engaged with the threads of the neck and the cap is rotated relative to the neck, the skirt will circumferentially expand so that the skirt bead passes over the neck bead. At that point, the threads will no longer engage and the interlocked beads will inhibit removal of the cap. Means are provided to enhance removability of the cap from the neck by tearing away a portion of the skirt.

  • Patent number: 4456136
Abstract: A safety closure, preferably for a medicine bottle, has a screw cap (20) or another closure cap which is to be rotated to be applied or removed, and a blocking mechanism in the form of an elastically resilient blocking means (16) on the bottle neck (11) or a collar securely mounted on the neck, and a stop face (26) on the closure cap. The cap has an area (27) of reduced wall thickness which is opposite the blocking means in the closed position and permits the blocking means to be actuated by external pressure on the cap. When the cap is rotated in the direction of removal from the closed position, the stop face encounters the blocking means and prevents additional rotation, unless the blocking means is pressed clear of the stop face by pressure on said area of the closure cap.

  • Patent number: 4423819
Abstract: A sealing cover has an upper layer of plastic film substantially impervious to moisture and bacteria. A second layer of metal foil film is bonded to the plastic layer with a layer of adhesive or by extruding the plastic onto the second layer. An additional layer of adhesive material is bonded to the second layer for adhering to a carrier liner in packaging the seal and engaging the container top in resealing the container upon removal from the carrier. Upon removal of the sealing cover from a container, telltale strips of the cover are left in engagement with the container to indicate the seal has been removed. • Patent number: 4385708
Abstract: A tamper proof lid which includes a crown having means for interlocking with a container neck finish. The crown has a depending skirt which incorporates a frangible portion and there is a handle which is secured to the frangible skirt portion generally as a continuation thereof and disposed radially outwardly of the adjacent part of the skirt. There is a rupturable webbing extending between the handle and the skirt which, when broken, indicates that the lid has been tampered with. The interlock between the crown and a container neck finish is sufficient to retain the crown in place under all conditions. The depending skirt initially provides for a hermetic seal. The lid is preferably formed of a relatively rigid material, such as polypropylene, which makes it virtually impossible to remove the crown from an associated container neck finish. The handle, once it initiates rupture of the skirt, is required to effect an upward prying and peeling of the crown from the associated container neck finish.

  • Patent number: 3931904
Abstract: A sheet metal closure is provided which has a tear strip across its skirt and a pull ring below the bottom edge of the skirt and integrally connected to the tear strip to facilitate severance of the score lines which define the tear strip. The pull ring is in the form of a bead which is curled inwardly from the connection of the ring to the tear strip and is adapted to be cammed against the neck of the container below the connection to the tear strip so the end of the tear strip will be partially wrapped around the curled bead when the tab is lifted to initiate severance of the score lines.

  • Patent number: RE31869
Abstract: A bottle cap is disclosed having a tear tab cooperating with score lines extending across the top of the cap for manual removal of the cap from a bottle. The score lines are located slightly spaced from the peripheral edge of the top of the cap and arranged at least partly around the periphery of the cap. This arrangement of the score lines serves to obtain an easy removal of the cap from the bottle after the tearing operation and is moreover in combination with the sealing element effectively preventing any risk for corrosion along the score lines.
