Patent number: 4382521Abstract: A thermoplastic closure suitable for fitment to a threaded container neck is disclosed. The closure has a top wall with an annular sidewall depending therefrom. To provide a gas-tight seal between the closure and the container, there is provided a gas-tight sealing system above the closure thread. About the inside surface of the annular sidewall is an extended closure thread which, due to its extent, requires the user to make two turning motions to achieve removal of the closure from the container. By requiring two turning motions, sufficient time is provided for venting of any pressurized gas from the container to the atmosphere. This venting can be facilitated by the utilization of any conventional venting means.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1981Date of Patent: May 10, 1983Assignee: Ethyl Products CompanyInventor: Efrem M. Patent number: 4369889Abstract: A thermoplastic closure for fitment to a container for packaging product capable of producing internal container pressure, e.g., carbonated beverages, is disclosed. The closure comprises a top wall and an annular sidewall downwardly depending from the top wall. A closure thread on the inside surface of the sidewall is provided for cooperation with the container neck thread to achieve fitment of the closure to the container. A sealing system adjacent the top wall of the closure provides sealing of the closure to the container. Venting structure is provided on either the closure or the container or both for venting of pressurized gas from the container upon loss of the seal when the closure is rotated to remove it from the container. A heat-shrinkable tamper-indicating means is attached to the lowermost edge of the sidewall of the closure. Application of heat to the tamper-indicating means causes it to shrink towards the container and to a point of interference with a container flange.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1981Date of Patent: January 25, 1983Assignee: Ethyl Products CompanyInventor: Efrem M. Patent number: 4206852Abstract: A linerless plastic closure is disclosed which is adapted to seal containers for pressurized contents such as carbonated beverages and which utilizes a plug configuration that is designed to expand under pressure. This is accomplished by making the plug in the form of a disc spring washer with tubular supports joining it to the top of the closure. Pressure against the disc spring washer increases the pressure of the seal against the interior surface of the bottle mouth to provide a reliable seal. The closure may have a slot through the threads on the closure to permit rapid escape of gases from the container during removal of the closure from the container. In this way, dangerous blow-off of the closure from a container is substantially eliminated.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1979Date of Patent: June 10, 1980Assignee: Aluminum Company of AmericaInventors: Lloyd G. Patent number: 3966071Abstract: A pressure relieving bottle closure is disclosed. The closure is of thin metal construction having an internal sealing disc and adapted to be received by a preferably screw threaded bottle neck to form top and side seals with finish surfaces of the bottle. The sealing material comprises a resilient liner within the closure. In the area of the side skirt of the metal portion of the closure which forms the area disposed over the side seal is at least one opening. If excessive pressure develops inside the bottle, pressurized fluid first escapes through the top seal of the bottle and, upon reaching the area of the side seal over which the said opening is located, pushes the sealing liner outwardly into the opening to escape through the side seal to the exterior of the bottle. The closure again seals when the excess pressure has been relieved, provided that the sealing material used possesses sufficient resiliency.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1975Date of Patent: June 29, 1976Inventor: John D. Northup

Patent number: 3944104Abstract: A threaded bottle stopper for controlling the release of pressurized gases from a bottle is disclosed. The threaded bottle stopper is used in conjunction with an externally threaded bottle neck and comprises a cap having an internally threaded annular skirt depending downwardly therefrom and a tubular body portion extending downwardly from and integral with the underside of the cap. The outside diameter of the tubular body portion is such to permit insertion thereof within a neck bore of a bottle. The continuous thread on the annular skirt engages a continuous thread on the neck of the bottle where rotation of the threaded stopper in both directions moves the tubular body portion respectively into and out of the neck bore of the bottle. The bottle stopper is provided with means for sealing the discharge opening of the bottle neck.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1974Date of Patent: March 16, 1976Assignee: Consumers Glass Company LimitedInventors: William Bruce Watson, Vernon James Graves
