  • Patent number: 5085339
Abstract: A reclosable closure for containers of the type used for keeping or storing product for some time following initial opening of the container. Typical uses would be for snack foods such as candies, peanuts, etc., and powdered products such as sugar, coffee, tea and other beverage mixes and the like. The closure also is adaptable for use with canned vagetables and meats and also with non-food products such as, for example, nails, tacks and a myriad of similar hardware items. The preferred closure includes an end panel and a ring-shaped frame member which are fused or otherwise adhered together during insert-injection molding of the frame member. Means are provided on the frame member for contacting an edge of the end panel, or an integral pull tab thereon, for restraining the end panel in a position for reclosing the container.

  • Patent number: 5065882
Abstract: A new can top structure is provided in a can containing beverage liquid therewithin. On the can top, a ring serving as a jig for forming an opening therein is attached by way of a rivet at the center thereof. The ring has a pull side free end and a push side free end. There is also formed a tear-out portion defined by a scored line in the can top and the push side free end of the ring overlaps part of the tear-out portion. Since the ring is oriented slantwise with respect to the tear-out portion, the ring stays out of the way at the time of consuming the beverage liquid even though the pull side free end of the ring is erected to cause the push side free end to drive part of the tear-out portion into the can such that an opening is formed.

  • Patent number: 5012959
Abstract: A paperboard carton and plastic pour spout fitment construction for cartons adapted to carry powdered or granular material, particularly foodstuffs. A side wall of the carton is provided with a precut opening to receive the separate fitment. The periphery of the sides of the pour spout bottom wall must be broken from the surrounding fitment by the consumer upon initial use, to permit the spout to pivot for dispensing. The spout is thus held against accidental opening during shipping and handling prior to use, and further, such breaking is automatically tamper evident. The fitment is attached to a side wall of the carton by use of an adhesive or by a plurality of rivet stakes integral with the spout. The rivet stakes are received in complementary punctures bordering the precut opening. The use of plastic for the pour spout fitment insures against metal particles contaminating the contents of the carton.

  • Patent number: 5007554
Abstract: A non-removable fulcrum-type lift tab, for opening a metal beverage container, is modified, by the inclusion of a lanced line at a position between the fulcrum pivoting line and the pushing end of the tab. The lanced line extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to the fulcrum-directed pushing force used to open the container, whereby, upon initial lifting of the tab, the lanced line opens, in a limited material separation. This results in substantially less lifting force (about 30% less), being needed to elevate the tab end about 1/4 inch (about 6 mm) for a finger to be more easily inserted for completion of the opening of the container. At this stage, the ends of the lanced line, such as in the configuration of drilled holes or inwardly arcuate lanced sections, stop continued material separation by providing a high resistance to such separation.

Abstract: The invention features a beverage container having a small and a large liquid dispensing opening. Each opening is operatively caused to be unsealed by the action of respective finger tabs. The two tabs act independently of each other despite being interleaved for the purpose of a compact design. The large opening features the unsealing of an entire lid portion of the container.

  • Patent number: 4834258
Abstract: A closure for cans of the type utilized for packaging carbonated soft drinks and beer is in the form of a pivotal closure tab secured by a rivet on the top end of the can. The closure is specifically designed for use with can having a pull tab opener and is secured to the same rivet utilized to mount the opening pull tab. A leading end of the pivotal closure tab is provided with a flange which is bent downwardly and registers with a peripheral groove on the top surface of the can. By first open the can with the pull tab, the pivotal closure may be used to reclose the can to preserve the purity and carbonation of the contents.

  • Patent number: 4801038
Abstract: An integral tongue is lanced from a steel can top except along a transverse bend line scored on the undersurface of the tongue adjacent to the can top. An arcuate nose portion of a pull tab is riveted to a first portion of the tongue. Opposing shoulders on the tab overlie portions of the can top adjacent to the tongue. A ring or lever portion of the tab is lifted and pivoted on the shoulders, thereby bending the first portion of the tongue under a ribbed second portion. The pull tab is then pivoted in the opposite direction, thereby displacing the entire tongue outwardly relative to the can top along the bend line.

Abstract: A spout (1, 1A) attached to a paper container (C) into which is filled a beverage such as milk, juice or the like is made of an elastic material such as polyethylene resin in such a way that it comprises a main body (3) in the form of a pipe or a case passed through the wall of the container and a cover (2) for closing an opening of the main body (3), the main body and the cover being made as an integral body. The cover (2) and the main body (3) are interconnected with each other through a reduced-thickness separable portion (9) which is severed when the cover (2) is opened and through a reduced-thickness portion (7) which functions as a hinge portion when the cover (2) is opened. The main body (3) and the cover (2) have formed on the outer surfaces thereof a first engagement element (10, 10D) and a second engagement element (11, 11D).

  • Patent number: 4784283
Abstract: A metal beverage can having an easy opening top provided with a scored or otherwise weakened line defining a flap opening. An opening structure or member is secured to the can top at flap area and serves to aid in tearing or splitting the top along the scored or weakened line to form the flap and also serves, thereafter, to push down the flap when the can is raised to the lips of a user such that the opening member makes contact with the user's upper lip. The top of the can is concave and the opening structure is so arranged as to provide a "stop" to prevent the flap from being pushed too far into the can interior. The flap when forward and free of the curved top is constructed so that it straightens to extend the forward lip of the flap so that it serves as a "stop" to prevent, in normal service, the flap from rising above the surface of the top. The flap is resiliently biased toward that position and resiliently returns to it after it is pushed down as by the lips of a user.
