The shoulder has a skirt depending from the outer terminal edge of the shoulder and an upper cylinder is attached to the annular shoulder at its inner terminal edge. The cylinder extends upward, terminating in an annular flared lip and the upper cylinder is attached to the shoulder by an annular scoring ring.

Abstract: A sanitary can cover is provided which extends over the top portion of a beverage can and includes a severable strip along its lower edge which allows the cover to be peeled back so that the can may be opened. Only about half of the cover can be folded away from the end of the can, the remainder of the cover being adhesively secured to the can. The cover may include a plug sealing an opening in the end wall of the can, and a pull tab to assist in removing the plug from the opening.

The closure also is adaptable for use with canned vagetables and meats and also with non-food products such as, for example, nails, tacks and a myriad of similar hardware items. The preferred closure includes an end panel and a ring-shaped frame member which are fused or otherwise adhered together during insert-injection molding of the frame member. Means are provided on the frame member for contacting an edge of the end panel, or an integral pull tab thereon, for restraining the end panel in a position for reclosing the container.

Since the ring is oriented slantwise with respect to the tear-out portion, the ring stays out of the way at the time of consuming the beverage liquid even though the pull side free end of the ring is erected to cause the push side free end to drive part of the tear-out portion into the can such that an opening is formed.

Abstract: A lid device for a wide-mouthed container comprises a metallic lid body having an inner margin defining an opening of a predetermined shape, and a closure member made of a soft synthetic resin for closing said opening of said lid body. The closure member is integrally formed with a pull tab used to open the closure member along a weakening line. The entire outer surface of the closure member is covered by a vapor impervious film, so that passage of water vapor through the lid device can be prevented even if the closure member itself is vapor pervious.

Abstract: A closure for a resealable container comprising an annular container engaging member fixedly attached to the edge of the container and a lid having an end wall and an annular skirt, the lid being attached to and separable from the container engaging member at a failure zone. In one embodiment the lid is adapted to reseal the container after it is separated from the container engaging member by turning the lid upside down and positioning it such that the annular skirt engages the container engaging member and the end wall covers at least a portion of the opening of the container. In another embodiment, the lid is also adapted to reseal the container after it is separated from the container engaging member by positioning the lid such that the annular skirt engages the container engaging member and the end wall covers at least a portion of the opening of the container. The invention also includes a stackable container having the closure described above.

Abstract: A paperboard carton and plastic pour spout fitment construction for cartons adapted to carry powdered or granular material, particularly foodstuffs. A side wall of the carton is provided with a precut opening to receive the separate fitment. The periphery of the sides of the pour spout bottom wall must be broken from the surrounding fitment by the consumer upon initial use, to permit the spout to pivot for dispensing. The spout is thus held against accidental opening during shipping and handling prior to use, and further, such breaking is automatically tamper evident. The fitment is attached to a side wall of the carton by use of an adhesive or by a plurality of rivet stakes integral with the spout. The rivet stakes are received in complementary punctures bordering the precut opening. The use of plastic for the pour spout fitment insures against metal particles contaminating the contents of the carton.

Abstract: A container end member is provided and has a first severable tab portion which is defined by a score line groove and has an integral hinge portion for permanently securing it to the container end member and a force applying tab portion permanently pivotally mounted on the container end member and used to apply a force on the first severable tab portion to form a pour opening in the container end member and a second severable tab portion having an integral hinge portion for permanently securing it to the container end member and having a raised surface projecting outwardly from the container end member so that a force may be applied thereto to sever the second severable tab portion and form a vent opening in the container end member.

Abstract: A non-removable fulcrum-type lift tab, for opening a metal beverage container, is modified, by the inclusion of a lanced line at a position between the fulcrum pivoting line and the pushing end of the tab. The lanced line extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to the fulcrum-directed pushing force used to open the container, whereby, upon initial lifting of the tab, the lanced line opens, in a limited material separation. This results in substantially less lifting force (about 30% less), being needed to elevate the tab end about 1/4 inch (about 6 mm) for a finger to be more easily inserted for completion of the opening of the container. At this stage, the ends of the lanced line, such as in the configuration of drilled holes or inwardly arcuate lanced sections, stop continued material separation by providing a high resistance to such separation.

Abstract: A container for liquids comprises a tube at the upper end of which there is a lid consisting of thermoplastics synthetic material without any carrier material and which is injection molded along the top edge of the tube, forming a pouring means with a closure flap. The closure flap is captively articulated on the lid by means of an articulating axis, on the side opposite the tip of the pouring aperture, being adapted to be engaged on the lid in the open condition via an engaging means. In order that the closure flap can be kept open and can nevertheless be pressed down again into as far as possible a clearly defined position in order to reclose the container, the handle is connected via a curved articulating member to the middle portion of the lid. The curved articulating member is preferably provided on the surface of the lid alongside the engaging means.

Abstract: A closure is provided for selectively closing an opening of a container, including a base element arranged to be affixed to a container adjacent an opening therein. In one embodiment, the closure is provided with tamper-evident film fixed to the base element, and a control element is pivotally movable relative to the base element between open and closed positions. When the base element is affixed to the container, the tamper-evident film obstructs the container opening. When the control element pivots to the open position, the tamper-evident film is visible, and can be punctured or otherwise removed. According to another embodiment of the invention, a closure is provided for a container having a tamper-evident film secured thereto overlying the opening in a container.

Abstract: An opening arrangement for a packing container includes a flexible strip having first and second parts which are connected to one another by a flexible intermediate piece. The first part of the strip has a downwardly projecting portion that fits within the hole in the packing container. The first part includes an openable part for preventing the contents from being emptied from the container until the openable part has been torn away. The second part of the strip is somewhat cup-shaped and includes a bottom surface that is sealed to the openable part of the first part so that when the cup-shaped second part of the strip is pulled backwards, the openable part will be torn away, thereby forming a pouring opening.

Abstract: The easy open beverage can has a weakened spout portion formed in one end which is punched out from the can end and pivoted into the interior of the can. A punch tab which remains connected to the can end is used to punch the spout portion. A closure flap is foldably connected to and underlies the punch tab, and is connected to the can by the rivet which also connects the tab to the can. The closure flap is swung about the rivet to close the can opening by twisting the punch tab about the rivet. The closure flap may have a seal-enhancing polymer coating on it and a lightly biased peripheral skirt.

Abstract: A tamper-resistant dispensing structure including a closure for selectively closing an opening in a wall forming a portion of a container. Retaining structure is provided for maintaining the closure in association with the wall and with a stopper portion thereof maintained suitably for accurate fit with the opening in the wall during a closing operation. A flange is provided on the container for controlling the lateral disposition of the closure on the wall. In one form of the closure, the container flange is turned to cause the distal end thereof to retain the periphery of the closure against the wall.

Abstract: A frangible seal breaking and aperture resealing device for a beverage container which utilizes a handle being pivotally mounted on the top of the beverage container. The handle is movable from a stowage position to a frangible seal breaking position and then to an aperture resealing position. There is incorporated on the top a camming protuberance which has the function of locating the handle in an inclined or canted position so as to facilitate its movement to frangibly separate a break-away tab incorporated within the top of the beverage container. The camming protuberance also exerts a biasing force tending to maintain the handle in the resealing position.

Abstract: A metal can end (10) has a metal pull tab (16) attached to a score-defined detachable portion (15) of the can end by direct welding of protective polymer coatings (19,20) whose surfaces at least are derived from the same monomer and which are provided on the upper side of the can and the under side of a shank portion (18) of the pull tab. The coatings may be composite films each comprising an inner layer of a bonding resin and an outer layer of a polyolefin, polyamide or polyester. The welding may be effected by heat or preferably by ultrasonic energy.

The pull tab is attached to the can end by means of a rivet, the can end around the base of the rivet being deformed so as to slightly tilt the rivet toward the finger end of the pull tab. Accordingly, initial lifting of the pull tab is fully directed to the initial fracture of the score line immediately in front of the rivet, thereby ensuring desirable venting action of internal pressure and allowing opening of the can end with less effort.

Abstract: A lid for sealing a container has a removable tear skirt. The lid includes a cap portion with a circular crown and depending sidewall. An undulating annular groove which defines a frangible thin walled strip divides the sidewall into an upper section and a lower tear skirt. The cap portion has a reinforced inner wall assembly that is spaced apart from an outer depending wall, the tear skirt being attached to a lower portion of the outer wall. A weakened area adjacent to and intersecting a small lateral slot formed in the undulating groove facilitates breaking of the tear skirt. When the tear skirt is removed, a plurality of bendable flaps are formed at the lower portion of the outer wall. A fastening rib formed on an inner surface of the outer wall is configured to lockingly engage a locking flange on the container for securing the lid to the container. Opening slots provided in the flaps are configured to receive a tool for disengaging the fastening ribs and the locking flange.

To prevent the packing laminate from delaminating on opening, so that only the outer layer accompanies the pulling device, it is proposed in accordance with the invention to design the opening part so that a penetrating part is first thrust downwards through the laminate, whereupon the opening part with the pentrating part and the underlying, breached part of the packing laminate is lifted upwards so that a pouring opening is generated.

Abstract: A container with a lid which is provided with scorelines defining a plurality of long narrow lugs. A tab is secured by its midportion to the central portion of the lid and has at one end a plurality of fingers which respectively terminate over the lugs for pushing the lugs into the container when the tab is lifted. The displaced lugs leave parallel, narrow slits which preclude the entry of insects, such as bees, into the container.

Abstract: This invention provides an end member adapted for sealed engagement with a container member wherein the end member has a central end wall portion which includes a severable tab portion. A hinge portion is integral with the central end wall portion and has spaced apart ends. At least one severable score line groove is formed in the central end wall portion and has a main body portion having end portions which define the spaced apart ends of the hinge portion and also defines the severable tab portion which may be severed by axially inwardly directed forces applied thereto so as to form an outlet opening in the central end wall portion. The hinge portion retains the severed tab portion attached to the central end wall portion.

Abstract: A sanitary cover for a pop-top beverage container and the like comprises an elastic membrane formed to extend over the top and axially along a portion of the sidewall of the container. The membrane has a line of weakness and a pull tab attached thereto so as to enable the membrane to be ruptured along the line of weakness. Upon being ruptured, the membrane recedes from the top and gathers about the sidewall a predetermined distance from the top at which the membrane is attached to the sidewall to expose a clean mouth area for drainking at the top and sidewall of the container.

Abstract: A method of making a metal can end with a tear-open plastics closure, for a can intended to be resistant to leakage when subject to internal pressures, such as arise from carbonation of a beverage or thermal processing, wherein the undersurface of the can end is provided with a plastics coating, and the can end is pierced to form an aperture with a peripheral downturned flange at an angle of 70.degree. to 110.degree. to the plane of the can end and having a flat end. A one-piece ring pull closure is injection-moulded onto the can end from a plastics material resistant to softening at up to at least 65.degree. C., without additional heating of the metal, so as to fill the aperture, bond with the coating, and enclose the flange, with a residual thickness below the flange of 0.125 to 0.5 mm. The thickness of the plastics material of the closure is such that it can be sheared against the flange when the ring pull is pulled manually.
