  • Patent number: 4501378
Abstract: A latch unit for releasably securing a plastic lid to a tank-like container or for releasably securing another covering over the container. The container may be the tank of an electric vacuum cleaner. There are a plurality of the latch units spaced along the edge of the lid or covering and engageable with a bead around the open end of the tank. Each latch unit includes a cage at the edge of the lid or of the covering and includes a latch element molded of resilient plastic material. One end of the latch element protrudes from the cage and is hand engageable for moving the element between releasing and holding positions. The other end of the element is provided with a hook that engages a cage formation to form a pivot for the element. A normally bowed intermediate section of the element connects opposite ends of the element, and is stressed to provide a biasing force that holds the element mounted to the cage.

  • Patent number: 4469225
Abstract: A tape cassette case has a main wall, a cover wall, with peripheral walls which extend from each, and a hinge formed from a back wall to connect the main wall to the cover wall. A locking means is provided and comprises a slider member slidably mounted onto a support member that forms part of one peripheral wall. The locking means is biased away from the one peripheral wall in a direction perpendicular to the sliding direction of the slider member by coil springs and pins. There are two projecting members projecting from the other peripheral wall, so that when the case is closed, the slider member may be slid in one direction to engage with the projecting members, thereby locking the main wall and the cover wall together, when the slider member is moved in the opposite direction the slider member is disengaged from the projecting portions, thereby allowing the case to be opened.

  • Patent number: 4194100
Abstract: The following specification describes a circuit breaker enclosure having a cover, which is latched closed by spring biased latch handles. The handles and cover move in response to gas pressure for relieving the pressure generated on tripping of the circuit breaker. The latch handles are arranged to point outwardly of the enclosure, when open, to provide a clear visual indication of their being open. The circuit breaker handle and enclosure handle are directly engaged with a common pivot pin for synchronous movement to enable the enclosure handle to indicate the trip condition of the breaker. When the cover is open, the handles are interlocked against movement to an ON position by a biased pivotable interlock plate. The cover in turn is latched closed through the interlock plate and a breaker handle plate, when the circuit breaker enclosure handles are in the ON position. A pair of spaced edge projections on the enclosure wall engage the cover sealing gasket to avoid a permanent compression set in the gasket.

Each of the latching arms is pivotally mounted to the container sidewall and has a flexible end that interferes, by a bending action, with the container sidewall providing a snap action which retains the latch arm in either a locked or unlocked position. In an alternate embodiment the latch arms are pivotally supported from the loops of the lid, and each have a pivot bar that engages securing hooks extending from the sidewall of the container.

  • Patent number: 4109819
Abstract: A quick-release vent structure and method for releasing a rapid pressure buildup within a vessel such as a storage bin. Vent covers are releasably seated over large vent openings presented by framework which is mounted to the vessel. Each cover is resiliently biased in place. Gas pressure in the vessel can lift the cover from the vent opening for pressure relief. If pressure raises the cover a distance greater than a predetermined amount, the biasing force is released from the cover by a quick-release mechanism and the pressure can blow the cover off without damage. The covers are preferably held in place by spring-loaded, snap action clamps. Each clamp includes a latch member that is pressed against the vent cover by an over-center spring. When the pressure force exceeds the spring force, the latch member is cammed to swing over-center and slides off the cover edge, thereby releasing the cover so that the gas pressure can blow it off and vent extremely rapidly.

  • Patent number: 4032035
Abstract: A container cover is provided which prevents young children from gaining access to the container's contents. The container has an opening at one end and a latch lip adjacent to the opening. The cover comprises a plate having at least one opening and a handle secured to the plate and having at least two grips, a releasing grip and a non-releasing grip. Two latching means secure the plate to the latch lip, one of the latching means is attached to the releasing grip and passes through the plate opening. The releasing grip has means for releasing the latching means such as lifting, sliding or rotating. The container may be used for containers for materials which may be harmful if handled or ingested.A particular application of the cover is on a magazine for soluble solids to be dissolved by a liquid, for example, in treating swimming pool water. The magazine is a component of an apparatus for dissolving and dispensing soluble material including a container having an upper and a lower chamber.

  • Patent number: RE30882
Abstract: An improved pneumatic tube carrier is provided for transmitting papers, currency and other articles between various stations at locations within a building or building complex. The carrier hull is constructed of identical mating sections each formed in a generally semi-cylindrical shape from a single mold. The semi-cylindrical halves are hinged together along one longitudinal interface. A closure mechanism is provided at the opposite interface and includes a catch spring biased toward the hull. An adjustment mechanism limits the movement of the catch relative to the hull. Adjustment is possible to correct for catch disposition variations with prolonged use. Proper adjustment allows the hull to be self-latching upon closure. Adjustment is effectuated with the hull closed through a perforation near the hinged interface of hull sections, whereby an elongated tool is inserted into the perforation and is used to alter the adjusting mechanism.
