Abstract: Three dimensional fabric matrices are provided for insertion into compartments of or attachment to wearable items and padded items, referred to as contact articles. The matrix includes a core that maintains an air space between inner and outer layers to facilitate heat transfer by convection and evaporation, when the enclosure is breathable. When the enclosure restricts air permeation, the air space provides insulation. Embodiments reconfigurable from insulating to breathable include adjustable impermeable sections that releasably cover permeable sections. The matrix also absorbs shocks and distributes stresses to provide padding and cushioning, including reduction of backface signature in ballistic applications. Wearable items containing one or more matrices offer enhanced thermal regulation and shock absorption.

Abstract: A system and mechanism for lifting and lowering bicycles onto the roof of an automobile or other vehicle. A lift arm containing support brackets for holding the bicycle is fixedly attached to a rotatable shaft member positioned on the roof of the vehicle. The shaft member is secured to a bearing member at one end and a gear set mechanism at the opposite end. A crank arm member or motorized mechanism is utilized to operate the gear mechanism and rotate the shaft member. Rotation of the shaft member in turn rotates the lift arm member and lifts and lowers the bicycle onto and off from the roof of the vehicle. Support members for holding the handlebar and seat of the bicycle are attached to the lift arm member for securing the bicycle to it. When the bicycle is in position on the roof of the vehicle, additional bracket members secure the wheels to the vehicle.

Abstract: A back-supported load-carrying mechanism that includes a rigid frame having a lower portion that includes an opening between a first vertical side and a second vertical side. A horizontal shaft is mounted to the sides and extends through the opening. A lumbar support element is pivotally mounted on the horizontal shaft. The horizontal shaft is mounted to the vertical sides of the frame with a suspension mechanism that enables each end of the horizontal shaft (and each side of the lumbar support element) to move fore and aft in relation to the frame. Tensioners mounted on the frame apply forward pressure to the shaft. Two rear leg extensions on each side of the frame enable the load-carrying mechanism to stand upright when placed on the ground. The lumbar support can pivot approximately 95 degrees to a position enabling the load-carrying mechanism to be utilized as a chair.

Abstract: A suspendable pack has a cover that is secured to and overlies a pack. The cover is a comfortable seat cushion that is secured by straps to a top flap of the pack. The straps are adjustable to create a space that receives a seat. A person then has a comfortable place to sit, and the pack is out of the way of his feet, but still readily accessible. In a modified embodiment, the cover is a sheet that is sewn to the top flap in a manner that forms an open pocket that receives the seat. A pad can be inserted between the seat and the sheet. In a further embodiment, the cover is a plurality of adjustable straps that directly overlie the seat and that are secured to the pack.
