Abstract: An antenna farm enclosure for a locomotive cab includes a planar lid hinged to a base and bearing an array of compact antennae. A separate frame holds the antenna farm above the roof to permit wind and moisture to pass beneath, and allows for adjustments for irregularities in the cab roof. A chimney surrounding a port through the cab roof extends upward into the antenna farm enclosure, forming a dam that prevents accumulated moisture from entering the cab or the enclosure. Cables from the antennae extend through the chimney into the cab. A wide flange surrounds the lid and bears against two concentric gaskets to seal the enclosure. Specialized hold-down devices arrayed around the flange compress both gaskets, and comprise threaded shafts hingedly coupled to the base. The slightly arched flange asserts spring-like tension against the hold-down devices, which compress the arched flange to strengthen the seal.

Spring-loaded legs on the lifting device are manually retracted radially to permit the smaller tube to be lowered concentrically through the larger tube. The inner tube is lowered until the legs spring radially outwardly to engage the base of the larger tube. The entire assembly may then be lifted as a unit by the hoist with the lifting device, establishing the axial positions of the two tubes relative to each other.

Abstract: Surprisingly, silver-copper-palladium brazing alloys, which have hitherto been used only for the brazing of components of the same material, are also very well suited for brazing directly titanium to stainless steel if, the latter component clasps the titanium component tightly, so that the cold joint is under constant compressive stress. In a method for forming the titanium-steel compound the titanium component is provided with a cylindrical end which has a smaller out-side diameter than an adjacent main portion whose external surface is a first surface to be brazed. The cylindrical steel component is a sleeve whose inside diameter is equal to the outside diameter of the main portion and whose internal surface is a second surface to be brazed. A silver-copper-palladium brazing alloy is placed around the end of the titanium component. The steel sleeve is slipped thereover.

Abstract: The disclosure is for a method of installing a heat pipe within another structure. A completely processed heat pipe is coated with solder and inserted into a cylindrical hole within the structure with sliding clearance. The application of heat also simultaneously melts the solder to bond the heat pipe into the hole.

Abstract: With the present invention, a reflow soldering method is provided for soldering a nonvertically approaching lead, which is part of a nonvertically approaching device (e.g, an edge connector), to a corresponding soldering surface (e.g., a pad on a circuit card) that includes solder. The soldering surface and solder are heated in an oven to melt the solder. While the solder is liquids, the nonvertically approaching lead is mated with the soldering surface as it is inserted into the solder. The soldering surface, solder, and nonvertically approaching lead are then cooled, and the solder solidifies to conductively mount the nonvertically approaching lead to the soldering surface.

  • Patent number: 5940951
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of cladded metal pipes facilitates joining of a tube blank and a coaxially disposed pipe section received therein, for subsequent extrusion of a resultant tube blank-pipe combination to form an internally-clad pipe of desired dimension. The pipe section, which is inserted into the tube blank, is expanded radially by internally directed pressure, while force is axially applied to maintain the expansion of the pipe section following removal of the applied internal pressure and axial force. A mechanically joined tube blank-pipe combination thus formed is extruded to form a finished pipe of desired profile in which a diffusion bond is present between material layers comprising the internally-clad pipe corresponding to the pipe section and the tube blank.

The hollow tubular shaft is brazed to a helical coil of reinforcing wire which fits snugly against the inside surface of the shaft. Brazing is accomplished by fitting the helical reinforcing wire into the tubular shaft and placing the assembly inside a controlled atmosphere or vacuum furnace where heat is applied to initiate the brazing function. By using appropriate metals and alloys the brazing and hardening is accomplished simultaneously without the use of flux. The proper choice of metals and the gauge of the metals ensures the desired strength, rigidity, and torsional characteristics of the shaft.

  • Patent number: 5261591
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of manufacturing bi-metallic tubing by the successive steps of explosive bonding, hot extrusion and co-extrusion. Bi-metallic tubing, having an inner wall made from a corrosion resistant material, is of particular use in the oil and gas industries. The invention offers a number of advantages over previously known manufacturing methods, such as increased cladding capacity, reduction in the number of joints required, and an improvement in dimensional accuracy. These are achieved by explosively bonding a tube 3 of a first metal to a substantially incompressible billet 1 of a second metal. A length of the bonded composite 15 so formed is subsequently hot extruded to form a bi-metal shell 25. A length of the shell 25 is then placed within the bore of a hollow billet 33, the interface 35 formed between the shell 25 and billet 25 sealed, and the assembled composite 39 so formed co-extruded to form a bi-metal tube 41.
