Abstract: A method an apparatus for reclaiming face fibers and polypropylene and/or polyvinyl chloride backing material from rolls and pieces of post-consumer carpet. The system includes a separator for separating the face fibers from the backing and for separating latex and carbon calcium powder from polypropylene backing. An extruder is provided for extruding the face fibers separated from the backing into extrusions, and a pelletizer pelletizes the extrusions. A roller opener opens the polypropylene backing into fibrous portions and also cleans such fibrous portions. Alternately, a granulator can be provided that chops and grinds the polypropylene or PVC backing into fragments after the separation of the face fibers from the backing. A heat source heats the PVC fragments, and also the polypropylene fragments (thereby separating the latex therefrom), and ultimately melts such fragments. Reclaimed fibers can be pelletized, made into extrusions, used in non-woven products and in other manners.

A hold down and infeed roller in combination with a conveyor feeds the materials into a rotating rotor. The rotor has cutters mounted on its periphery and is rotated in a direction to produce an upward cutting action. The rotor partially reduces the materials into smaller particles. An anvil in combination with the rotor further reduces the particles into the desired size. A grate dictates the size of the materials to be discharged from the machine.

  • Patent number: 5881959
Abstract: A materials grinder includes a rotary grinding drum and a shear bar cooperating with the grinding drum to grind various types of materials. The shear bar is mounted on a pivotal structure adjacent the materials grinding drum. A displaceable biasing member biases the pivotal structure toward the grinding drum to maintain the shear bars in close cooperating relationship therewith. If ungrindable materials are encountered, the pivotal structure pivots away from the grinding drum against the bias force of the biasing member to permit the ungrindable materials to pass between the grinding drum and the shear bar. Once the ungrindable materials pass, the biasing member moves the pivotal structure back toward the grinding drum. Materials to be ground are fed to the grinding drum by means of an infeed conveyor and an overhead infeed roller.

  • Patent number: 5837030
Abstract: A process is described for preparing a nanocrystalline powder of an alloy of at least two metals by an intensive mechanical grinding step performed upon powders of the metals which make up the alloy. The grinding is performed at atmospheric pressure under an inert atmosphere, and is carried out at a temperature in the range of 100.degree.-400.degree. C. In this manner, one obtains crystallites of the alloy having a grain size lower than 100 nm by grinding for a period of time lower by about an order of magnitude than the time necessary to achieve this grain size by a similar grinding step carried out at ambient temperature.

  • Patent number: 5533684
Abstract: Two rolls are mounted to a frame and rotated about spaced parallel axes by electric motors operating through speed reducers. Each roll has a surface formed of uniformly spaced, circumferential extending triangular grooves and ridges defined between grooves. The ridges of one roll are closely spaced from the grooves of the other roll to define a sinuous nip therebetween. A vibrating conveyor orients wood strands and feeds the strands to the nip with the grain of the strands parallel to the roll ridges and grooves. Wood chips have low strength transverse to the direction of the grain and, thus, when forced to flex by the interdigitating ridges and grooves of the opposed rolls, split into narrower strands.

  • Patent number: 5505391
Abstract: Straw shredding/dispersing apparatus shreds straw or other shreddable material into small particles and disperses the particles over land. A conveyor feeds shreddable material through a door into a housing, and into a shredder in which three sets of flail-like structure shred the shreddable material. The first two sets of flail-like structure that impact the shreddable material spin at a slower speed than the third set of such structure. A centrifugal blower sucks the shredded material through a tapered inlet, and forces the material through a directable ejector tube. The ejector tube is remotely controlled to direct both its radial and vertical orientation.

Abstract: A transportable machine reduces vehicle tires to a fine powder size suitable for incorporation into new articles of manufacture. An upper infeed assembly is mounted to a frame above a spring-loaded upwardly biased lower infeed assembly. A splayed tire is fed between guiderails on the upper and lower guide assembles and is driven along by upper drive sprockets and rides on lower idler sprockets. The tire is fed by a tire-feed positioned above a cutter bar and biased downwardly to clamp a cut splayed tire against the cutter bar and to feed the tire over the bar and into cutter blades mounted on a rotary blade assembly. The rotary blade assembly has a shaft mounted for rotation about an axis to the frame and has a plurality of cutter blades spaced about the shaft periphery. Each rotary cutter blade has a saw-toothed profile with triangular teeth. The tips or the moving blades are slightly spaced from the cutting edge formed on the fixed cutter bar.

  • Patent number: 5368238
Abstract: A horizontally oriented three sided frame is adapted to hold a round hay bale. An endless chain driven conveyor encircles the floor of the frame to cause the round bale to rotate about a longitudinal axis thereof while simultaneously urging a portion of the perimeter of the bale against a rotary drum cutter arrayed just above the floor on one side of the frame. The cutter chops the hay bale into individual strands for feeding to livestock. A spacer, commonly called a concave, is pivotably attached to the frame, and is spaced from and extends longitudinally along the top of the rotary drum. The spacing between the concave and the drum is adjustable. By adjusting this spacing, as well as the speed of rotation of the rotary drum and the speed of rotation of the round bale via the conveyor, the length of hay strands cut by the cutter is adjustable.
