Abstract: A colloid mill utilizes a motor-driven shaft configuration that connects to the rotor of the colloid mill to the electric motor rotor. In this way, the mill rotor shaft is directly driven. Complex gear or belt drive arrangements between a separate electric motor and the fluid processing components of the colloid mill are thus avoided. Moreover, the gap between the mill rotor and mill stator can be adjusted simply by axially translating the motor-driven shaft. Such translation is provided by a timing belt-based arrangement to limit backlash. As a result, a simple hand-operated knob or stepper motor arrangement can be used to control the gap.

Abstract: A method and means for adjusting a forage harvester shear bar relative to its rotating cylinder. The outer end of the shear bar, the central portion of the shear bar and the inner end of the shear bar can all be selectively adjusted while the cylinder is rotating, these adjustments being made from the outer or operator's side of the harvester and at a common location. All of the shear bar adjusting means are located at one convenient and safe area at the outer or operator's side of the machine and the operator can accurately adjust the outer, central or inner end of the bar by noting the "tick" noise created when the particular end or portion of the shear bar being adjusted touches or comes in contact with the rotating knife of the cylinder.
Abstract: A forage harvester including an imperforate peripheral shield for the cutterhead extending from the shear bar in the direction of rotation and a plurality of parallel elongated bars mounted on the face of the shield adjacent the cutterhead periphery and disposed at an obtuse angle to the direction of rotation, preferably greater than the obtuse angle of the cutterhead knives to the direction of rotation.
Abstract: A forage harvester cutterhead of the type having a rotatable member carrying circumferentially spaced cutting knives. Each knife is beat such that a leading cutting portion is directed radially inwardly of its trailing portion and ahead of its knife support so as to provide better cutting power efficiency and more clearance for its mounting means. The bent knife configuration allows a thinner knife edge to be used and provides improved quality and uniformity in cut crop material. The thinner knife cuts through mat of material with less force and less disturbance to uncut material resulting in fewer long particles pulled from mat and much fewer long cob particles. Corn cobs are not dislodged from mat due to lower cutting force and hence are sliced up neatly.
Abstract: A rotatable cutterhead for a forage harvester having a plurality of parallel support members within plans perpendicular to a central shaft and spaced axially therealong. A plurality of similar chopping blades are affixed in circumferentially spaced relationship to each other around the support members, whereby the interior of said cutterhead is open and susceptible to ingress of cut forage material. Baffle strips extend from each blade inwardly from and adjacent the cutting edge at a sufficient distance and angle to deter the ingress of cut material into the interior of said cutterhead.

Abstract: A novel cooperative blade construction for the rotor and bed knives of a size reduction machine such as a granulator and the like wherein each of the blades are of an overall chevron configuration so as to form a generally trapezoidal opening therebetween. As the blades progressively move past each other, the height of the trapezoidal opening is reduced such that articles to be granulated are initially contacted at opposed laterally spaced points on opposite sides thereof such that articles are clamped and progressively cut with a minimum of energy consumption, noise and fines production. The generally centrally located peaks of the rotor blades and the bed knife blades are also arcuately displaced away from a radial plane passing through the opposite side portions. The blades progressively move past each other while maintaining an equal cutting gap therebetween.

Abstract: A support structure for a cutter bar for use in a forage harvester, the support structure adjustably supporting the opposite ends of the cutter bar and providing a convenient readily adjustable structure for supporting the central portion of the cutter bar to prevent movement of the central portion of the cutter bar relative to the cutting cylinder of the forage harvester and to afford adjustment of the position of the central portion of the cutter bar relative to the blades of the cutting cylinder.
Abstract: In a forage harvester, a plurality of spaced knife supports are angularly spaced apart around the periphery of a rotatable cutter drum. A straight beater bar is displaceably fixed to each knife support so that the beater bars have an impact edge which rotates past a counterknife at the inlet of the harvester. The side surfaces of the beater bars leading in the direction of rotation are disposed at a slight angle to the side surfaces of the counterknife. The beater bars are spaced apart at about 15 to 20 degrees relative to the axis of rotation of the cutter drum and the dimension of the overall arrangement is such that the spacing between impact edges of adjacent beater bars is about 60 to 100 mm.
Abstract: In a beam-backed cluster-type strip mill each roll is driven separately from a vertical motor placed on top of the housing through a floating right-angle gearbox. The gearbox is keyed onto one end of each roll and is so suspended that only pure torque is transmitted to the roll and the reactions as well as the weight of the box are absorbed by the suspension means.Roll oscillating mechanism, forcing the rolls to travel axially back and forth far enough to efface marks left by the backing casters, is incorporated in the gearbox. This drive possesses substantial advantages over conventional drives, which make the mill more accessible, and save space. Moreover it makes possible various roll configurations by adding supplementary rolls to the cluster pattern thereby increasing the range and scope of the mill.
