    Abstract: The paper shredder simultaneously shreds both manually inserted sheets of paper and sheets of paper that are placed in an auto-feeder input tray. Immediately above the shredding mechanism the input path is bifurcated. One branch extends essentially straight up from the blades and leads to a manual input slot. A second branch extends at an angle towards the rear of the shredder where an auto-feed roller lies at the bottom of an auto-feed slot. When a stack of paper is placed into the slot, the bottom of the stack rests against the auto-feed roller which grasps the top sheet and pulls it under the roller. The roller then pushes the sheet down the angled throat where a curved surface bends the sheet downwards and into the shredding mechanism.

The slitter has rotatable arbors and knives on each arbor that rotate about their axes and are held adjacent to each other. A computer is used to calculate a first and second spacing for the arbors based on the shear strength, outer diameter, and thickness of the material. The material is inserted between the knives and the leading edge passes through the slitter with the arbors the first position that pinches the material between outer diameters of opposing knives as it moves forward. While the material moves forward the arbors are moved into a second and closer position in which the knives are situated to slit the material as it passes between the knives. This slitting of material behind the leading edge creates a leading tab holding the slit strips together.

    Abstract: A shredder for shredding substrates has a shredder mechanism, a motor, and a pair of cooperating shredding structures each having a set of spaced apart cutter elements interleaving with one another such that substrates are fed between the interleaved sets of cutter elements. At least one of the cooperating shredding structures includes a rotatably mounted shaft rotatable by the motor with its cutter elements mounted in spaced apart relation with spaces therebetween. The shaft has a tubular body with an inner surface defining a hollow interior, an outer surface, and a plurality of openings formed through the tubular body open to the inner and outer surfaces. The openings are open to the spaces between the cutter elements on the shafts. A supply of lubricant communicates with the plurality of openings of the shaft to deliver the lubricant from the interior of the shaft to the cutter elements through the openings.

A thermistor on the motor energizes (self-heats) with the motor.
