Abstract: An asphalt roofing material recycling system and method is used to recycle new and used (post consumer) asphalt materials, such as asphalt shingles, rolled roofing and tar paper that may include granules, fibers or other particles. The asphalt material, which may be in bundles, is broken up and separated and then provided to a cooled recycling vessel. Dry ice is added along with the asphalt material to be recycled. The dry ice removes any moisture present and super-cools the material making it brittle and easier to chip and break up. The recycle vessel includes a number of high speed shippers having tulip hear chipping teeth as well as one horizontal mixer element which stirs the material and makes sure all material is ground. The resulting course to fine powder can be separated by screening and stored as power or compressed into bricks or briquettes.

Abstract: A method and system for processing biomass material from harvest to pelletizing includes a continuous shredding stage and grinding stage to reduce the size of the material. A fan pulls air through the shredder and the grinder to assist the movement of the biomass material through the shredder and the grinder. Due to the light weight of the biomass material, the material is transported between the shredding and grinding stages mechanically and pneumatically by a combination auger with air assist. The biomass material may include agricultural residues, such as corn stover. The process and equipment eliminates or minimizes damage to the carbohydrates in the biomass so as to maintain pre-grinding cellulose and hemi-cellulose levels.

Abstract: A microfibrillar cellulose substrate having a defined morphology and optimized concentrations of free radicals formed by milling a source material containing alpha cellulose with non-metalic cutting surfaces into a sterilized fine powder with a particle size of approximately 20 to 35 micrometers. A gauze selected from the group consisting of a woven, nonwoven, and extruded netting substrate for supporting the microfibrillar cellulose substrate. The microfibrillar cellulose substrate may be carried between a first layer of the gauze and a second layer of the gauze by affixing the first and second gauze layers closed around their perimeter.

Abstract: Separating pile, adhesive, and primary/secondary backings of post-consumer carpet includes spectrographic fiber identification. Separating substantial portions of pile from backing comprises contacting a rotating pinned drum, with separated pile U's dropping, while a residual composition, being primarily backing, travels with the drum for subsequent delivery to a press. Dislodged pieces of adhesive are removed from separated U's by a spinning perforated squirrel cage utilizing vacuum pressure. A shaker table receives substantially separated U's upon a first screen. Eccentric motor(s) cause vibrations therein separating remaining backing and adhesive from U's, with the U's and adhesive falling through openings in the first screen onto a second screen, and with adhesive falling through openings in the second screen. The angle of the screens and frequency/direction of vibrations are adjustable to optimize a rate of production and a degree of separation.

Abstract: The present invention provides a process for dry grinding one or more mineral materials which include at least calcium carbonate. The process includes a) crushing the mineral material or materials in at least one crushing unit until a crushed material is obtained with a d95 of less than 10 cm, and dry grinding the material in at least one grinding unit (i) in the presence of at least one comb-type hydrophilic polymer containing at least polyalkylene oxide function grafted on to at least one unsaturated ethylene monomer, and (ii) in such a manner that the quantity of liquid in the grinding unit is less than 15% by dry weight of the material crushed in the crushing unit, wherein recovered material has a d50 of 0.5 to 500 microns.

Abstract: Provided is a unit which is capable of readily grinding and collecting a small amount of a sample which is difficult to be ground. The unit for grinding a sample comprises a club-shaped pestle and a mortar into which the pestle can be inserted, wherein the pestle comprises a roughened taper located at at least one end of its pestle body, wherein the mortar is a tube with an inverted frustoconical bottom, and the surface of the mortar where the taper of the pestle contacts the inverted frustoconical bottom when the pestle is inserted into the mortar is roughened, and wherein the angle of the taper with respect to the longitudinal centerline of the pestle is substantially equal to the angle of the inner wall of the inverted frustoconical bottom with respect to the longitudinal centerline of the mortar. The roughened taper and surface improve grinding efficiency.
