    Abstract: Cellulosic biomass is reduced to a micropowder with particles having average diameters below 5-10 micrometers with a significant fraction of the particles have diameters below 1 micrometer. Biomass (e.g., wood, agricultural waste or other plant materials) is first processed into pieces having a maximum diameter of about 10 mm. This is then dried to reduce its water content to no more than about 15% by weight and introduced into a disruptor which reduces the particle size to about 1 mm. Next the biomass is processed with a disc mill where edges of rotating discs travel along a groove pressing and squeezing the biomass, thereby breaking the biomass pieces into smaller and smaller particles. The resulting micropowder is extremely susceptible to enzymatic or chemical hydrolysis into constituent sugars. In addition, the micropowder can be suspended in an air stream and burned directly to provide heat to boilers and similar devices.

    Abstract: A shredder for brushwood and the like (FIG. 1) has at least one shaft carrying a helically arranged array of cutting discs surrounding the shaft. The discs are individually fixed on lugs which are generally radial to the shaft. As the brushwood is fed along generally parallel to the shaft axis it is impacted by the cutter discs, acting against one another where two parallel shafts are employed, or between the discs and a surrounding chamber wall if only a single shaft is employed. The shredded material is further fed and exhausted through a delivery passage by a current of air induced both by the discs and also by fan vanes carried by the shaft. The advantage of the discs as cutters is that if and when worn or blunted, each can be adjusted angularly on its lug to present a fresh portion of its periphery for action, without it being necessary to immediately replace or re-sharpen it.

In order to create, particularly with a reduced construction and design effort, a comminuting apparatus, with which material can be comminuted effectively to a predetermined extent, the comminuting mechanism comprises at least two, essentially coaxially disposed comminuting tools one of which can be caused to rotate by means of the drive motor, the other of which, on the other hand, is disposed to be stationary or to rotate at a low rotational speed. Moreover, one of the comminuting tools has classification form recesses which are open towards the other comminuting tool.

The grinder is provided with a clearance adjustor for adjusting the clearance between the rotary disc and the stationary disc.

The mixer is set up originally with an estimated correlation between the stator and the rotor by establishing the total working area of discrete raised bars in the rotor and stator and by establishing the stator bar height, the radial gap between the rotor bars and the inside surface of the stator, and the proportion of predominance of feed bars in the stator. The material to be processed is then input into the mixer, and the power consumption is monitored. Depending on the results, the stator bars are then changed according to selected relationships to increase or decrease the rotor penetration of the layer of material formed around the stator in response to a given rate of input of material.
