Knife Shiftable To Sever Material Patents (Class 242/527)
  • Patent number: 5839689
Abstract: An air box for use beneath a pair of carrier rolls or a roll winder for a web. The air box disposed beneath the carrier rolls has first and second side walls generally sealed respectively at each of the carrier rolls. The paper web passes beneath one of the carrier rolls and up between the rolls. The web may tear and the paper web then drops into the air box. A connecting wall in the air box between the side walls thereof and above the base receives the paper falling thereon rather than the paper falling into the air box. The connecting wall may be inclined to direct the falling paper toward a side wall where an opening is provided enabling the moving of the paper. The connecting wall may be perforated and the air flow into the air box is beneath the perforated wall so that the air flow through the wall cooperates in moving the falling paper along the connecting wall. As a result, the waste paper can be removed quickly and easily.

  • Patent number: 5727747
Abstract: A process is disclosed for removing a shrink wrapping drawn over a stack of goods. The shrink wrapping is vertically cut at one side of the stack of goods, one edge of the cut is held and secured to a winding spindle, and the winding spindle is then guided around the stack of goods so that the shrink wrapping is winded on the winding spindle that rotates around its longitudinal axis. Also disclosed is a device for carrying out the process.

  • Patent number: 5660349
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transferring a web to a mandrel to form a coreless, convolutely wound roll which includes an enveloping roller, first and second mandrels, a transfer roller and a cutoff mechanism in the path of travel of a web to be wound, advancing a web in partial enveloping relation with the enveloping roller and toward the first mandrel, moving the second mandrel to a position adjacent the web, orienting the enveloping roller and transfer roller to positions defining a pocket with the second mandrel in the pocket to define a nip between the second mandrel and enveloping roller, rotating the transfer roller in a direction opposite to the direction of advance of the web, and severing the web to provide a leading edge portion.

  • Patent number: 5639045
Abstract: In order to be able to manufacture large-caliber reels of high quality in a twin drum reel-up, the king rolls (11) and (12) have different diameters and are situated at different elevations. The main load of the reel is carried by the king roll (11), while the king roll (12) contacts the reel (13) with the smallest possible nip pressure which just suffices for transferring the torque difference required for generating the desired winding tension of the reel. The king roll (12) may be lowered as the diameter of the reel increases, namely depending on the fact if the winding shaft (13A) is displaced along a predetermined line of motion (14; 15), preferably a linear vertical or slightly tilted line of motion. An additional center drive which is made possible due to the aforementioned measures may additionally improve the winding result.

  • Patent number: 5593106
Abstract: An apparatus for continuously winding web material into a succession of rolled packages includes spaced side frames which define a transfer path leading from a first winding station to a second winding station. A plurality of rotatably driven winding drums extend between the side frames and support the cores and packages wound thereon during a winding operation which begins at the first winding station and continues during transfer of the cores to the second winding station. Tracks are fixed to the side frames which mount a transfer carriage movable on the tracks between the first and second winding stations. A first hold down mechanism and a first rider roll are carried by the carriage and a second hold down mechanism and second rider roll are located at the second winding station. The first hold down mechanism engages grooves in the ends of mandrels which are inserted into the cores to axially stabilize the mandrels.

  • Patent number: 5582359
Abstract: A paper web cutting device utilizes a slit shaft that is positioned adjacent pair of cooperating cylinders and which has a slit through which a paper web passes. The shaft is rotatable to transversely sever the paper web which is then rolled on the slit shaft. The shaft can be displaced away from the printing couple in a direction opposite to the direction of web travel as the paper web builds up on the shaft. The accumulation of the web on the slit shaft prevents bunching of the web or the roll-up of the web on the printing cylinders.

  • Patent number: 5562261
Abstract: There is provided a coiling machine for coiling a continuous paper web having two large rolls that form a coil bed for uptake of a paper coil. The space bounded by the large rolls and the coil is formed as a pressure-tight chamber that has a compressed air connection. Particularly for the present invention, one of the two large rolls has a jacket that is essentially more intensely deformable than the jacket of the other roll and, thus, one large roll is softer than the other large roll. The upper vertex of the softer large roll is located lower than the upper vertex of the harder large roll. The web guidance is configured for one embodiment of the coiling machine such that the web is introduced from below, and between the two large rolls, to wind around the softer large roll. For another embodiment of the coiling machine, the web is introduced through a pressing gap between one of the large rolls and the coil.

  • Patent number: 5340048
Abstract: A cutting and splicing unit has first, second and third blocks arranged to hold a leading portion and a trailing portion of a leader extracted from an access opening of a cassette being processed. The second and third blocks, which are integral with each other, can be individually disposed close to the first block through a movement parallel to a front panel in a direction perpendicular to the cassette access opening. A gripper member passes over the blocks to pick up a piece of adhesive tape supplied from a supply unit located in front of the front panel while a blade fastened to the gripper member severs the leader or the magnetic tape laid on the blocks. The simultaneous lifting of the blocks applies the adhesive tape to a junction area.

  • Patent number: 5332167
Abstract: A clamping mechanism clamps the free end of a leader tape onto a hub, a moving mechanism moves the hub together with the clamped leader tape end to a winding position, a cutting device cuts the leader tape a predetermined distance from the hub clamped onto the free end of the leader tape, a splicing mechanism splices the cut end of the leader tape to a free end of a magnetic tape, and a revolving mechanism then winds the spliced together leader tape and magnetic tape onto the hub. When the winding of the spliced together leader tape and magnetic tape is completed, the cutting device cuts the magnetic tape, and the splicing mechanism splices the cut end of the magnetic tape with the cut end of a leader tape. The clamping mechanism then cuts the leader tape having the magnetic tape spliced therewith, and clamps another hub to the free end of the leader tape.
