A non return valve is positioned in the channel to limit pressure equalization from the wider end to the smaller end of the plug.

The plug being machinable to restore the proper shape and tolerances when combined with replacement of the wear liner by one of compensatingly greater thickness.

    Abstract: A shut-off device, such as a valve or a cock, for pipelines and comprising a casing provided with a flow passageway. The casing is provided with an inlet and an outlet and at least one shut-off member provided with a cavity, the member being movable between a position in which the flow passageway is open and a position in which the flow passageway is closed. An auxiliary chamber is arranged in the casing and communicates with the cavity of the shut-off member. The auxiliary chamber is defined by a separate, almost non-resilient wall portion abutting an abutment face on the wall of the casing. A pressure-relieving passageway formed in the wall of the casing is arranged between an abutment face at the auxiliary chamber and the inlet or outlet of the shut-off device. As a result, a shut-off device having more simple structure than known shut-off devices is obtained.

In association with the shut-off members two auxiliary chambers are communicating with cavities of the shut-off members. The shut-off device is formed of a single undivided casing. As a result, the overall length of the shut-off device may be reduced compared to prior art. Moreover, the tightness at high pressure, e.g. above 100 ato. is enhanced.

The spool has a deep, generally U-shaped, diametrically extending cavity on one side and a single, solid sidewall on the opposite side, the cavity being so formed that it presents a cross-flow inlet approximately one quarter turn away from the passage blocking surface of the sidewall. Hence, when the spool is in its open position during filling, the cavity is vertically flow-aligned with the passage while the blocking sidewall is disposed alongside the passage, and when the spool is in its closed position the blocking sidewall spans the passage above the horizontally disposed cavity to prevent fluid movement past the spool.

Sealing of the stem passageway isolates the stem packing from the fluid in the valve body cavity, prevents fugitive emissions related to stem leakage and prolongs the useful life of the stem packing.

Preferably the groove and the seat seal have an annular, cylindrical shape. Also preferably the seat seal has a shape so that a pressure space is formed adjacent the base wall of the groove and a gap is formed adjacent the radially inner wall of the groove. Fluid pressure in these urge the seat seal into sealing positions.

A unitary plastic plug member is rotatably positioned in the chamber. The plug member has open and closed positions. Dual durometer valve seats are positioned on the plug member to close the inlet and outlet openings in the valve body. The actuator portion of the plug member extends upwardly through the chamber and seals the internal chamber at the top by means of a circumferentially extending flange portion. A bottom cover plate is fused to and seals the lower end of the internal chamber. The bottom cover is arranged to disengage from the valve body and relieve excess pressure build up in the lower end of the chamber.

The journal bearing so configured is known as a Schiele's pivot. The Schiele's pivot also serves to maintain proper alignment of the valve stem with respect to the bonnet.
