Abstract: A process for the preparation of a fire-extinguishing composition comprising a compound having an empirical formula MC.sub.2 N.sub.2 H.sub.3 O.sub.3, where M is potassium or sodium, by reacting a mixture of urea and an alkali selected from hydroxides and carbonic salts of potassium or sodium, the process comprising adding solid particulate urea, or urea and alkali in solid particulate form, to an agitated bed of solid particulate material, the bed of particulate material being heated to a temperature in the range 95.degree. to 200.degree. C and comprising at least alkali in the case where urea alone is added, and the rate of addition of the urea, or of the urea and alkali, being controlled to maintain the bed in a solid particulate form.

Abstract: A fire retardant laminate construction comprising a plastic backing film adhesively secured to an insulation batting material. The adhesive material comprises an intumescent coating, containing one or more fire retardant additives, which will foam and char at high temperatures to form a solid multicellular, fire retardant insulating layer which prevents wicking of the plastic material into the insulation batting.
Abstract: A dry fire extinguishing composition particularly useful in extinguishing Class B fires on cooking ranges and the like; comprising, between about 50% and 95% of an alkali metal bicarbonate, such as, sodium bicarbonate or an alkaline earth metal carbonate, such as, calcium carbonate and between about 50% and 5% of a metal silicate, such as, calcium silicate, magnesium silicate, etc.
Abstract: An aqueous fire-retardant composition capable of forming a foam layer and consisting ofI. an aqueous preparation comprisingA. a non-etherified amino-formaldehyde resin or its components or a mixture thereofB. at least one ammonium phosphate,C. a skeleton forming component andIi. a solution of at least one further amino-formaldehyde resin being at least partially etherified with at least one alcohol having 1 to 12 C-atoms and dissolved in an organic solvent,a construction supporting unit and an electrical cable unit with a coating of said composition.

Abstract: A low chloride extinguishing agent for combustible metal fires comprising from substantially 75 to substantially 94 weight percent of sodium carbonate as the basic fire extinguishing material, from substantially 1 to substantially 5 weight percent of a water-repellent agent such as a metal stearate, from substantially 2 to substantially 10 weight percent of a flow promoting agent such as attapulgus clay, and from substantially 3 to substantially 15 weight percent of a polyamide resin as a crusting agent.

Abstract: A fire-fighting foam-compatible powder containing a fire-extinguishing powder and from 0.1% to 5% of a partially-hydrophobic powdered silica, having a surface area of at least 10 square meters per gram, and carrying a surface treatment with a silane, wherein the degree of hydrophobicity measured by the methanol titration test is in the range of 3 to 35.
Abstract: Intumescent compositions are described which when deposited on a substrate protect the substrate against heat and fire damage for an appreciable time, and these compositions are readily removed from the substrate by water washing or water scrubbing both before and after intumescing. Another advantage of these compositions is that they give off very little smoke when exposed to heat and fire. The most effective of these compositions comprise monoammonium phosphate and/or diammonium phosphate as a heat- and fireproofing agent, urea and/or cyanoguanidine (dicyandiamide) as a gas forming or gas generating agent to promote the intumescence, sucrose (sugar) together with the phosphate to promote initial intumescence at low temperature and titanium dioxide as a heat-reflecting agent. Certain possible alternatives to the compounds named above are also named.
