  • Patent number: 5514320
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a hollow tool which is used to impart shape to an article. The method comprises: (a) building an outer box around a model of the article; (b) constructing an inner box disposed within and spaced apart from the outer box; (c) applying a fluid laminating agent to an inside surface of the inner box and to the model; (d) removing the inner box after the fluid laminating agent cures to form a solidified shell; (e) supporting the shell so that a space is formed between it and the model; (f) pouring a filling agent into the space, the filling agent bonding to the shell and forming a face that replicates the model; and (g) installing a support structure inside the shell to form the hollow tool, thereby imbuing the tool with the physical characteristics of lightness in weight and durability in shape retention after prolonged exposure to thermal cycling and the thermal characteristics of a uniform heat conductivity over all sections of the tool, regardless of its outside dimensions.

  • Patent number: 5510074
Abstract: A smart card is made of a thermoplastic material card body having two substantially parallel major sides. A support member with a graphic on it is on at least one side of the card. An electronic module has a contact array to one side of which is fixed a chip including an integrated circuit. The support member is placed in a mold comprising an hollow space defining the shape of the card and delimited by two main walls corresponding to the major sides of the card, and it is held against one of these main walls. A thermoplastic material is injected into the volume defined by the hollow space to fill the volume not occupied by the support member. The electronic module is placed at an appropriate position in the hollow space before the injected material has solidified completely.

  • Patent number: 5505602
Abstract: A mold for joining a molded portion onto an end of an extruded weather strip without having any looseness in the joint formed therebetween, and which facilitates removal of a fin formed in the molded portion. The mold includes mold members defining a cavity at an end of which an end of the extruded weather strip is placed, and to which a molding material is injected. The mold members further define a tunnellike additional cavity in a parting plane therebetween. The tunnellike additional cavity extends along a peripheral edge of the cavity so that an end thereof is located at the position beyond the end of the extruded weather strip. A passage is also defined in the parting plane so as to interconnect the cavity and the tunnellike additional cavity for introducing a molding material into the tunnellike additional cavity. The passage extends to a position close to but not beyond the end of the extruded weather strip.

  • Patent number: 5487853
Abstract: A three-dimensional complex preform is made formed of various types of reinforcement fiberglass fibers with a binder at the interstices which rigidize the preform to the shape and form approximating the molded article, which can be handled and stored until a final mold is made filling the interstices with plastic and curing the plastic. Complex preforms require either specific reinforcements in the form of increased sections, specific reinforcement, or require modification or enlargement in size or increase in complexity by the attachment of one or more additional preforms. To modify an existing preform and obtain a desired shape and form, reinforcement members or additional preforms are attached by energetic stitching. Energetic stitching includes the application of an electromagnetic energy curable binder and the application of electromagnetic radiation to cure the binder.

  • Patent number: 5460767
Abstract: A method is provided for processing an electronic circuit assembly having surface mount integrated circuit packages mounted to its substrate, in which ingress of a conformal coating into a void present between the IC package and the substrate is prevented by a masking composition which forms a barrier around the IC package prior to the conformal coating process. The masking compositions are hot melt materials, in that each is initially a solid at roughly room temperature, melts to become a liquid at an elevated temperature at which the masking composition is applied to the electronic assembly, and forms a solid upon cooling to a temperature corresponding to a service temperature of the electronic assembly. As such, the masking compositions can be rapidly applied through various highly controllable techniques, and will quickly and sufficiently solidify upon cooling to allow handling of the electronic assembly.

Abstract: A radial lip seal for sealing about a pin of a hinge joint is disclosed. Such seal includes an outer mounting ring, a rubber flex ring mounted inside the mounting ring, a tension ring mounted inside the flex ring, and an inner elastomeric seal ring mounted inside the tension ring. The seal ring has an inside diameter that is a sufficient amount smaller than the pin to cause the tension ring to be stretched by a predetermined amount when the seal is mounted about the pin. The tension ring is capable of exerting a radial force of at least 20 N/cm of circumference on the seal ring upon being stretched the predetermined amount. The unique construction of such a seal is effective in sealing out highly abrasive materials found in very severe operating applications, such as on earthmoving vehicles, and provides a seal having an extremely long service life in such applications.

Abstract: The front panel of a control panel is provided with a recess for receiving a keypad. The recess is larger than the keypad to define a channel between the edges of the keypad and the sides of the recess. A sealant fills the channel to provide a smooth transition between the front panel and the keypad that protects the edges of the keypad and prevents the entry of moisture and debris into the channel.
