Patent number: 8431061Abstract: A method for use in manufacturing a ceramic matrix composite article includes assembling a ceramic fiber sheet between a tool and a die, where the tool is conformable to the shape of the die and the melting point of the die is greater than the melting point of the tool. The assembly is then heated to soften the tool. At least one of the tool, the die or a separate inflatable member is then pressurized to conform the tool and the ceramic fiber sheet to the die. Next, the assembly is cooled and the pressure is vented before removal of the tool and ceramic fiber sheet from the die. A preceramic resin with a catalyst is then applied to the ceramic fiber sheet and cured at a curing temperature that is below the melting point of the tool, to form a preform. The tool is then removed from the preform.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2011Date of Patent: April 30, 2013Assignee: Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey B. Patent number: 8394310Abstract: An inflatable compaction tool for consolidating a composite material inside a faceted hollow or tubular mold for a composite part is made from an elastic material. The compaction tool includes relatively flat wall segments conjoined by corner segments that define a sealed chamber. The wall segments curve away from the mold surface toward the midpoint of each wall segment, so that as a pressurized fluid is introduced into the compaction tool, a component of the force exerted on the tool interior surface is transmitted through the wall segments toward the corner segments. Thus, during initial inflation, the corner segments are forced toward the corner regions of the mold before the wall segments contact the composite material, firmly compressing the composite material into the corner regions of the mold before the friction of the wall segments against the composite material inhibits expansion of the corner segments into the mold corner regions.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2010Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Steven F. Patent number: 8377361Abstract: In imprint lithography, a mold having a pattern of projecting and recessed regions is pressed into a moldable surface on a substrate. The thus-imprinted moldable surface is permitted to at least partially harden to retain the imprint, and the substrate and mold are separated. In accordance with the invention, the substrate is separated from the mold by bending laterally distal regions (regions away from the center toward the edges) of the mold transversely away from the interface and transversely restraining the substrate. The mold can then be easily separated from the substrate by transverse displacement. The separation can be facilitated by providing a mold having a lateral dimension that on at least two sides extends beyond the corresponding lateral dimension of the substrate. Alternatively, the substrate can have a greater lateral extent than the mold, and the mold can be restrained. The distal regions of the substrate can be bent in the transverse direction.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 2007Date of Patent: February 19, 2013Inventors: Wei Zhang, Hua Tan, Lin Hu, Stephen Y. Chou

Publication number: 20120043698Abstract: A method for construction of a concrete platform for use in slab track railroads, comprising supporting a tie plate and rail on a concrete form for casting the concrete platform. The concrete form includes a horizontal form positioned below the tie plate, that supports a cast in place fastener system that is imbedded in the surface of the concrete platform and secures the tie plate to the concrete platform. The horizontal form comprises a removable or sacrificial insert that is cast into the surface of the concrete platform. Materials such as expanded polystyrene can be used to make sacrificial inserts that can be removed by dissolving with solvents such as dibasic esters. After the concrete platform is cast, the removable insert is removed and the resulting cavity is filled with a filler material, all without the need to disassemble the tie plate and rail.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 18, 2011Publication date: February 23, 2012Inventors: Douglas Delmonico, Fabien Weber

Publication number: 20120025422Abstract: A method for demolding concrete blocks which are cast in a resilient mold supported in a rigid frame, the mold having a top surface and at least one cavity with an opening on the top surface, which cavity holds a cured cast concrete block. The mold has two opposing edges. The demolded blocks are stacked on a collection surface. A support is positioned over the cavity and the mold, the support and the frame are inverted and positioned in demolding apparatus. After two opposing edges of the mold are engaged by the demolding apparatus, the support is withdrawn to allow the mold to sag. The blocks may release from the mold and fall onto the collection surface. If any blocks remain in the mold, a plunger mechanism is pushed against the sagging mold to release the blocks. Guide members may facilitate positioning the blocks on the collection surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 28, 2011Publication date: February 2, 2012Applicant: Rosetta Hardscapes, LLCInventor: James A. Publication number: 20120025423Abstract: According to embodiments of the present invention, there is provided a cavity insert for a molding system, the cavity insert having a deformable portion. More specifically, A cavity insert (106) is provided, the cavity insert (106) is for a molding stack (102) for use in an injection mold, the cavity insert (106). The cavity insert (106) comprises a body (122) configured to be received, in use, within a cavity plate (104) of the injection mold; the body (122) defining: a cavity molding surface (124) along an inner portion thereof; a circumferentially deformable portion (123); and an actuator interface (134) configured to cooperate, in use, with a complementary actuating interface (136) that is defined on a compression member (138) to generate a compressive force that selectively elastically deforms the circumferentially deformable portion (123).Type: ApplicationFiled: April 8, 2010Publication date: February 2, 2012Applicant: Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd.Inventor: Derek Robertson McCready

Patent number: 8101035Abstract: A mandrel and method of making a mandrel for use as a substrate in the manufacture of woven or braided articles. The mandrel may have an inner core of foam; at least a first layer of carbon fiber-reinforced resin, and an outer layer of glass fiber-reinforced resin. The foam core may be a high density, closed cell polyurethane foam that is formed of a desired size and shape. The fibers in the first layer and outer layer may be, for example, chopped fibers, continuous longitudinally aligned fibers, circumferentially wound fibers, obliquely aligned fibers, or the fibers may have a woven or braided pattern. Multiple mandrels may be joined together to form complex mandrel shapes such as curves, ovals, and circles.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2010Date of Patent: January 24, 2012Assignee: A&P Technology, Inc.Inventor: Steven Stenard
