  • Patent number: 10371086
Abstract: A piston assembly for an internal combustion engine includes a cylinder bore and a piston having a plurality of ring grooves, and a ring positioned within a ring groove. The ring includes a cross-section having a lower surface and an outer radial surface that form a scraping corner, an inner radial surface, and an upper surface. The upper surface and the lower surface are generally parallel with one another, and both upper and lower surfaces form a positive first angle with respect to a radial axis, and the outer radial surface forms a second positive angle with respect to a central axis. A constant twist occurs in the ring about a rotational center of the cross-section, the constant twist occurring at each cross-sectional location of the ring about the circumference of the ring and between adjacent free ends of the ring.

  • Patent number: 10309535
Abstract: A piston ring assembly for sealing a cylinder wall to a piston body is provided. The piston ring assembly includes a plurality of rings stacked in an axial direction one in abutment with another. Each ring has an inner face and an outer face. The piston ring assembly also includes a spring which substantially circumferentially surrounds the stacked rings and abuts the outer faces of the rings. The spring biases the stacked rings in a radially inward direction for sealing the inner faces of the rings against the piston body. The spring may be of a strip of material bent into a serpentine pattern when in an at rest condition to apply the biasing force against the piston body.

  • Patent number: 9541198
Abstract: In some two-stroke engines, a stationary ring is disposed in a groove in the cylinder liner. However, it is a challenge to install such a stationary ring while maintaining a narrow gap to minimize gas flow through the gap. A ring system for an internal combustion engine is disclosed that includes an L-shaped, split ring with a reentrant angle and a nested, split ring with a convex quadrilateral cross section nested with the L-shaped ring proximate the reentrant angle. The two rings are affixed so that the two gaps of the split rings cannot align. Or, in other embodiments, the two are allowed to rotate relative to each other over a predetermined angle.

  • Publication number: 20040061291
Abstract: A side rail is formed into a ring shape having its generally rectangular section that has an outer surface 3 formed with a pair of edge surfaces 5 of small radius, and an intermediate surface 6 of large radius of curvature formed between the edge surfaces 5. When the side rail is in the inclined condition in operation, each edge surface 5 can easily ride on oil film on cylinder 16 and allow the side rail 1 to perform smooth sliding movement on the inner surface of cylinder. The intermediate surface 6 efficiently scrapes lubricating oil on cylinder to form lubricating oil film of necessary and minimum thickness between an inner surface 17 of cylinder 16 and side rail 1. Also, the larger radius of curvature for forming the intermediate surface 6 provides a larger contact area to the inner surface 17 of cylinder 16 to improve wear resistance.
