  • Patent number: 9073708
Abstract: Provided herein is a pneumatic carrier having a leak resistant cargo area where first and second mating shells form the carrier. To provide a leak resistant cargo area, the one embodiment of the carrier employs a flap-type sealing member. In one embodiment, a first engagement surface about a peripheral edge of a first of the shells includes a groove into which a base portion of a sealing member is disposed. A second portion of the sealing member forms a flap that extends upward and inward from the base portion. A second engagement surface of the second shell contacts this flap and compresses the flap toward the first engagement surface when the shells are in a closed position.

Abstract: A gasket for a railroad car manway nozzle and cover includes an inner leg portion and an outer leg portion joined by a generally planar annular body portion defining an upper annular cover sealing surface and a lower annular nozzle body sealing surface. Concentric annular chevrons are formed on the upper and lower annular sealing surfaces. In one form, the chevrons have a uniform height relative to the upper and lower sealing surfaces. In a modified form, the height of the chevrons varies relative to the surfaces from which they extend. The height of the chevrons is a minimum where the gasket is radially aligned with cover clamping bolts and a maximum at radial locations midway between clamping bolts. A tab depending from the outer leg portion provides visual verification of the presence of the gasket.

Abstract: The invention concerns an assembly typically operating at above 500° C., between two components of different mean thermal expansion coefficients, between which a seal is inserted having a coefficient which differs by a value of at least 1.10?6 K?1 from the coefficient of at least one of the two components. According to the invention: below a threshold temperature, the seal undergoes orthogonal compression obtained by constant clamping of the two components towards each other, above the threshold temperature, the seal undergoes orthogonal compression by clamping and radial compression obtained by the sliding of seal surfaces bearing upon at least one of the components until an end portion of the seal is placed under radial compression against the same component, this portion being free of any contact below the threshold temperature. The seal is designed not to reach its creep rupture point during a cycle of use of predetermined duration.

Abstract: A seal including a base and a conductor mounted to conduct current from a source disposed on a first side of said base to a sink disposed on a second side of said base. In the illustrative embodiment, the base is annular (ring-shaped) and fabricated of airtight, watertight and/or electrically insulating and/or conductive material such as rubber, Teflon®, silver impregnated Teflon®, or other suitable substance. In the illustrative embodiment, the conductor is a single strip of conductive material and the base has a recess to allow for deflection thereof. In the best mode, plural conductors are mounted within the annular base. Each conductor has a brush at each end thereof. The brushes are provided by a split(s) at the end of each strip effective to create multiple fingertips. Each strip is secured at an angle in a slot in the base and retained further by an anchor. The anchor is integral with the strip and transverse to the longitudinal axis thereof.
