  • Patent number: 8225476
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing a catalytic converter is described where the catalytic converter is comprised of an outer tube member having a monolith substrate internally compressed therein with a wrapped mat material surrounding the monolith substrate and intermediate the outer tube. One or more monolith members can be applied within the outer tube and heat shields may also be applied internal to the outer tube and adjacent to the monolith substrate. The assembly of the catalytic converter includes measuring the sequence of compression of the mat material to the monolith substrate in order to understand the possible force characteristics that can be applied during the assembly thereof. The mat material is therefore compressed within the outer tube by way of compression jaws, by compression rollers, by spinning and/or by a shrinker including compression members. The compression of the mat material can be in single or multiple steps.

Abstract: To substantially eliminate deficiencies such as portions of the resinous coating, where the film thickness is reduced considerably during the press-fitting, and to aim at providing a high productivity with a reduced cost and without the possibility of occurrence of rusting after a prolonged time of use under severe environmental conditions due to an excellent anticorrosive property, a magnetic encoder (10) includes a multipolar magnet (14) having a plurality of alternating magnetic poles alternating with each other in a direction circumferentially thereof, and a core metal (11) supporting the multipolar magnet (14). The multipolar magnet (14) is formed of a sintered element prepared by mixing and sintering a powdery mixture of a magnetic powder and a non-magnetic metallic powder.

Abstract: A modular synthetic grass playing surface system formed from a plurality of modular units. Each modular unit has a synthetic grass layer placed upon predetermined sized pallets having a pre-installed elastomeric layer. A layer of resilient particle infill is optionally introduced to the top surface of the modular unit. A corrugated plastic sleeve is optionally installed around each formed modular unit while the modular unit is stored and moved. A plurality of modular units are then installed onto a relatively flat surface to form the playing surface in a desired shape and size.

Abstract: A microfabricated actuator of the vertical comb-drive (AVC) type or staggered vertical comb-drive type for torsional or linear applications includes torsion springs which permit self-aligned deformation of the device (micromirror) structure of the actuator through the heating of the torsional springs to plasticity. The torsional springs can include perpendicular-beam springs or double folded beams which allow axial movement of the spring when heated. Heating of the springs can be by bulk heating of the actuator structure or by Joule heating to the torsional springs by passing an electrical current therethrough.

  • Patent number: 7047641
Abstract: An exhaust emission control device is manufactured by sizing a housing of over a substrate and intumescent mat subsequently to heating said emission control device. The step of heating causes said intumescent mat to at least reach a temperature at which it swells. If the substrate has a washcoat layer, it may be left unfired until after it is assembled with the housing, in which case the step of heating causes the washcoat layer to sinter.

Abstract: A golf club head has a metal base, face and tubular neck and a carbon-fiber cover. The face extends up vertically from one edge of the base. The tubular neck is integrally connected to the base and the face. The cover is made of a carbon-fiber material and is securely attached to the base and the face. Because the carbon-fiber material is lighter than metal, the area of the face is enlarged. In addition, the shock absorbing effect of the golf head club is also improved.

  • Patent number: 6907651
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of assembling a structure, particularly those structures requiring very tight tolerances. The structure may be assembled by positioning shim material on at least part of a sub-structure, curing the shim material in situ, machining the cured shim material to a desired thickness, and then assembling outer layer parts to the sub-structure such that the shim material is situated between the substructure and the outer parts. The shim material may be machined to different thicknesses at different locations on the sub-structure, so that, when assembled, the outer layer parts together conform to a predetermined profile. This is especially advantageous in the manufacture of airframes, where the outer layer panels must provide a smooth surface to avoid unwanted aerodynamic effects.

A pair of impact pins are slidably mounted through apertures in the support plate and are interconnected to one another via a cam linkage arrangement to enable the impact pins to be actuated simultaneously using one air cylinder. The pins are mounted on trucks that slide within respective brackets on the bottom surface of the support plate. Two mating picture frame members are loosely assembled with an impact sensitive connector therebetween. The pair of impact pins simultaneously impact the connector on its opposing ends to respectively secure the connector to the picture frame members thereby securing them together to form a completed picture frame corner joint.
