Abstract: A steel rod body is fixedly fitted, at its end, with a metallic coupling member manufactured independently of the rod body. A solid section having a free end is formed either at the end of the rod body or the coupling member, while a tube section having an opening at its end is provided on the corresponding end of either the rod body or the coupling member. Circumferential and axial grooves are formed on the outer peripheral surface of the solid section. At least the free end of the solid section is inserted into the opening of the tube section, and the tube section is crimped by means of dies. Thus, part of the metal material of the tube section creeps into indentations on the solid section so that the tube section and the solid section are firmly linked together for integration. • Patent number: 4606109
Abstract: The zirconium cladding of a coolant-displacement rod of a nuclear reactor is precollapsed in the zirconium oxide stack of pellets which supports the cladding. Current is conducted through the cladding in an atmosphere at reduced pressure containing residual oxygen, to heat the cladding to a temperature at which its yield strength is reduced. Then, while the rod remains at this temperature, it is subjected to isostatic pressure which collapses the cladding uniformly. The formation, by reason of exposure to neutron flux, of a long unsupported gap in the cladding which might be collapsed under the pressure of the coolant is precluded. In addition, the rod retains its symmetry. The outer surface of the cladding is oxidized, facilitating the movement of the rod into its thimbles of the core and improving the resistances of the cladding to reaction with the coolant.

  • Patent number: 4498222
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a process for clinching a wire rope on a buckle base, which comprises the following consecutive steps:subjecting a starting anchor block material and the wire rope in combination to a first clinching operation to obtain a preformed anchor block bearing steps therein; andsubjecting the preformed anchor block and the buckle base in combination to a second clinching operation to clinch the resultant anchor block on the buckle base, which second clinching operation is applied in a direction different from the first clinching operation. Owing to the first and second clinching operations carried out in directions different from each other, the resulting stresses are scattered and the anchor block is thus protected from being overstressed.

Abstract: A vibration damper including a vibration damper mechanism composed of a piston-and-cylinder construction located within a pipe jacket wherein fitting elements such as a spring retainer and a steering knuckle support are attached on the pipe jacket by a mounting construction in accordance with the invention. The fitting elements are located on the pipe jacket at their corresponding positions and they are deformed in such a way that radially inwardly directed projections of the fitting elements are shaped in conformity with corresponding indentations of the pipe jacket in order to provide a reliable locking connection between the fitting elements and the pipe jacket in a simple and economical manner.

  • Patent number: 4474562
Abstract: A belt tensioner has an elongated support bar formed with a transversely throughgoing aperture and an annular inwardly directed lip around the aperture. A hardened metallic inner bearing race is centered on and elongated along a bearing axis and has one end extending into the aperture and formed with a circumferential radially outwardly open groove in which the lip is snugly fitted. An outer race is mounted on and coaxial with the other end of the inner race and is supported thereon by means of roller-bearing elements. The nonmalleable one end of the inner race does not need to be deformed to secure it in the support bar; instead the support bar, which is normally made of malleable steel, is deformed to make the connection.

  • Patent number: 4437914
Abstract: A method of producing sheathed cables and/or transducers such as wire strain gauges, temperature probes and so on. Such cables comprise an outer tubular casing and one or more electrically conductive leads embedded in insulating material. Production begins on a flat strip which is bent by means of a female mold into a tubular shape with an approximately circular cross-section, whereby the free edges of this blank are bent back so as to form radially protruding flanges. The leads are inserted into this preformed tubular casing and the spaces are filled with insulating material in powder form. The diameter of the tube is reduced and the density of the inserted insulating material is increased by pulling on the flanges in a specially designed abutment. After the desired density is attained, the flange is cut off and the free edges are welded together.

  • Patent number: 4432129
Abstract: A solid extruded light conductive ribbon of generally rectangular cross section is provided with a tubular ferrule by the steps of placing a section of heat shrink tubing over the end of the ribbon, heating the tubing and ribbon until the shrinking of the tubing deforms the ribbon end into a generally cylindrical form and then applying a cylindrical ferrule over the end of the ribbon and crimping the ferrule in place. The heat shrink tubing thus serves to protect the conductive ribbon during the crimping operation and serves to form the ribbon end into cylindrical form as well.

  • Patent number: 4430785
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a device for the magnetic treatment of fluids including water, liquid and gaseous fuels, propane, oil and the like. An elongate inner tubular casing having a magnet therein is supported within an intermediate casing made of a ferromagnetic material, and a pair of end fittings are connected to opposite ends of the intermediate casing and serve to center the inner casing therein. The end fittings each have a tapered passage therein, and as they are threaded on the ends of the intermediate casing, the ends of the inner casing are guided into the tapered passages and are gradually deformed inwardly thereby so that the tapered passages tightly seat against the ends of the inner casing to prevent radial and axial movement of the inner casing relative to the end fittings. This results in a self adjusting support of the inner casing and avoids crimping or other deformation which may result if the end fittings are threaded too far.

  • Patent number: 4419804
Abstract: In illustrative embodiments a method has been shown for manufacturing a piston rod unit. The piston rod unit includes a metallic tube shaped piston rod member defining a cavity therein and at least one terminal member having a fastening pin fastened within a respective end portion of the cavity. The fastening pin is provided with an outer diameter which is larger than the initial inner diameter of the piston rod member. This fastening pin is pressed into an end portion of the cavity so as to radially expand the piston rod member along at least a part of the end portion to an expanded outer diameter larger than the initial outer diameter of the tubular piston rod member. Hereupon the piston rod member is radially compressed by hammering within the area of the expanded outer diameter until the initial outer diameter is substantially reestablished.

  • Patent number: 4383353
Abstract: A collar threads onto a shear pin. When the collar engages a surface of a workpiece, resistance to further threading increases. When sufficient resistance to threading occurs, a setting driver upsets lobes of the collar and forces these lobes radially inward toward the axis of the collar. Material of the collar inside the lobes responds to deformation of the lobes and flows radially inward against the shear pin to lock the collar, shear pin and workpiece together. The driver then rotates freely and a joint has been made with a predetermined clamp-up load and its component parts locked together.

  • Patent number: 4376334
Abstract: The invention provides a terminal clamp assembly comprising a fastener and one or more captive members and a method for making such a terminal clamp assembly. The terminal clamp assembly comprises a threaded fastener including a driver head portion, a threaded shank portion of predetermined thread crest diameter and an unthreaded shank portion of lesser diameter intermediate the threaded shank portion and the driver head portion. A captive member has a through aperture of greater diameter than the thread crest diameter and surrounding the unthreaded shank portion, and laterally oppositely outwardly extending protrusions on opposed outer edge portions. These protrusions are compressed by a planar die so as to deform the through aperture to a dimension smaller than the thread crest diameter, thereby captively assembling the captive member with the fastener, subsequent to formation and heat treatment of the fastener.
